Chapter 2029: Chapter 2026: Siege (Part 1)

A ghost soldier in armor rushed over and said to City Lord Jia, "Lord Jia, they’re here again."

"Damn it, they think my fortress is as easy to break as tofu." City Lord Jia listened to the report and rudely cursed, then turned, his gaze sternly fixed on He Shan: "Pass the order, prepare for battle!"

"Yes!" He Shan’s expression was solemn, he nodded slightly, then turned and ran towards the ghost soldiers in the distance, making gestures as he ran. The ghost soldiers saw the gestures and immediately sprang into action, very swiftly.

The ghost soldiers who had been just watching split into many small units, some heading up the city wall, some running to nearby houses, and others heading to the fortress gate.

The cavalry quickly assembled and soon formed an array on the training ground, without disorderly shouting. Each maintained silence, appearing majestic and murderous!

Lin Tian watched in secret awe; the efficiency of these ghost soldiers was too high, barely needing any commands to complete the gathering and quickly form combat power.

Though Lin Tian had not witnessed an emergency military gathering before, he could tell that only elite forces could manage such efficiency. Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu were equally shocked; in such a scenario, no one could remain unimpressed.

"Trained thoroughly, acting swiftly," sighed Zhang Lingyu.

City Lord Jia turned, glanced at Lin Tian and his companions, and said, "Everyone, I’m sorry, there are conflicts ahead, and I can’t host you. The information you seek will only be available after the battle ends. You may return to Blood Sea City to wait, or, if interested, you can join me on the city wall to take a look."

Mu Yun turned to Lin Tian, understanding he was leading this Blood Sea visit, and she was just assisting. Whether they should go or not depended on Lin Tian’s decision.

Lin Tian did not hesitate and immediately said, "Of course I’m interested."

"Good." City Lord Jia nodded, turned, and walked towards the fortress wall with long, strides.

The defense of the fortress was a main city wall, with stone steps constructed at the left, middle, and right positions on the wall. Ghost soldiers could rapidly support the top of the wall through three paths of stone steps.

Lin Tian and the others took the middle stone step path to ascend, as Mu Yun asked while walking, "City Lord Jia, what exactly is coming?"

City Lord Jia maintained his walking speed and replied calmly, "You’ll find out when we get up there."

Lin Tian and his group exchanged glances, each perplexed about what dared to challenge the Netherworld’s authority.

It was known that the Netherworld wasn’t just about Black and White Impermanence capturing souls and organizing reincarnation; it was a massive system with clear divisions, ruling the entire Netherworld, standing strong for thousands of years.

With confusion in mind, Lin Tian quickly ascended the city wall’s top, which was spacious enough for four cars to pass side by side.

By now, many ghost soldiers had gathered on the wall, each carrying a quiver filled with arrows and holding a longbow in hand; these were the bowmen.

Lin Tian walked to the outer edge of the wall and looked far into the distance. The canyon stretched far until it was out of sight, but other than stones, there was nothing in the canyon.

"Report..." a ghost soldier ran over and loudly reported to City Lord Jia, "They’ve reached ten miles away."

"Keep scouting," City Lord Jia calmly ordered, and the ghost soldier retreated upon receiving the command.

Ten miles away was already beyond the current view since the canyon wasn’t a straight line but rather winding, allowing sight only at the distant turns.

"City Lord Jia, I’ve seen Lord Zhu use the remote viewing technique, why still use scouts?" Lin Tian asked in puzzlement.

The remote viewing technique could see things a hundred miles away. Back then, Lord Zhu used it to observe the Netherworld channel, so Lin Tian felt strange to see scouts needed for information at the fortress.

"Of course I know the remote viewing technique, but I can’t monitor the entire canyon every moment. Each has their duty; that’s what we should be doing. Besides, our scouts transmit information very efficiently." City Lord Jia replied matter-of-factly.

While speaking, another ghost soldier came over swiftly to report, "Sir, they’ve reached five miles away."

"Such speed; what on earth stimulated them? They’re usually not like this." City Lord Jia frowned, with doubt in his eyes.

Woohoo...

Suddenly, the canyon far away conveyed an eerie sound like a night owl calling or a wailing spirit crying. The sound grew nearer as a dark red torrent suddenly rushed from the distant bend towards the fortress.

"No, it’s not a torrent!" Lin Tian’s sharp eyes immediately identified the difference.

It was a multitude of humanoid spiritual bodies, their insides seething with dark red light, their eyes leaking dark red gleams like voracious demons.

"Evil spirits!" Lin Tian recognized them as evil spirits he’d seen on the way here, but those were much calmer, merely wandering around.

But the distant evil spirits seemed like they’d consumed a Blood Angel, becoming berserk, whether in their frantic assaults or devouring red light, seemingly wanting to engulf the fortress.

"Evil spirits? You mean the ones we saw on the way?" Xiao Manxuan asked in surprise.

City Lord Jia overheard and turned his head, frowning, "You’ve encountered them?"

Mu Yun nodded and replied, "Yes, but those evil spirits seemed lost, while these clearly turned berserk, not knowing what triggered them."

"Indeed, they’re berserk, and the fortress has been assaulted by berserk evil spirits before. To this day, we’ve not uncovered the reason. Why do they go berserk? Why are they gathering in large numbers?" City Lord Jia’s gaze turned solemn.

He then turned back to watch the evil spirits, which were drawing closer, and loudly commanded, "Archers ready!"

With a swift noise, the archers on the wall raised their bows, pulled the strings, but their arrows were aimed at the sky indirectly, not directly at the evil spirits.

"Release!"

With one command, the archers nearly simultaneously let go, and a myriad of arrows soared upward, painting an arc before falling into the evil spirits below.

Instantly, many evil spirits fell, although several arrows missed. But the evil spirits seemed fearless, paying no heed to their dying companions, continuing to charge under the barrage. Some even with multiple arrows embedded kept advancing without pause.

The archers operated in two tiered teams; after one shower of arrows, the first tier quickly retreated to reload, while the second tier advanced for another volley, repetitively coordinating to harvest the evil spirits.

This remote unscathed enemy slaughter felt very satisfying, highly striking, but Lin Tian furrowed his brow since many evil spirits, despite numerous arrow hits, continued their quick onslaught with undiminished speed.

Moreover, even after several arrow showers, the evil spirits weren’t completely wiped out, and their numbers had hardly halved at all.

Having battled demons and ghosts for long, Zhang Lingyu clearly noticed the anomaly too; the fortress’s output and effective damage did not correlate, evidently failing to impose remote suppression.

As the evil spirits rushed closer, the longbow soldiers soon lost shooting range since the longbow’s arc firing required a certain distance for effectiveness.
