Chapter 2030: Chapter 2027: Siege Warfare (Part 2)
Without the suppression from the longbow soldiers, the wraiths seemed even more frantic, rapidly charging towards the fortress.
City Lord Jia remained unfazed and calmly shouted, "Prepare for the storm!"
A storm? Lin Tian wondered, could it be a large-scale destructive spell? But soon, this doubt vanished.
The sound of "ka ka ka" echoed from the city walls, followed by dense mechanical clacking. Then, one by one, lids on the edge of the city wall opened, and a series of machines rose up.
The machines looked very simple from the outside, with a base, and on the base, a square box with neatly arranged round holes on its outer side.
With a click, a sharp object suddenly protruded from each round hole. Upon closer inspection, Lin Tian saw they were sharp arrowheads! All the arrowheads were angled downward, pointing outside the city wall.
"Fire!" City Lord Jia commanded, and with a loud hum, all the boxes simultaneously launched crossbow arrows, an overwhelming volley of arrows pouring like a storm into the canyon.
This round of arrow rain was even denser, nearly obscuring the space in front of the fortress. Lin Tian finally understood why it was called a "storm"—not a spell, but a dense arrow rain.
Who knows what material these arrows were made of, but they could harm the wraiths, which fell like cut wheat, wave after wave.
Lin Tian activated his super vision, peering through the bases of the crossbow carriages. He discovered complex mechanisms inside the bases, orderly loading and preparing the crossbow arrows, much like modern automatic cannons.
After several rounds of the "storm," the area in front of the fortress was littered with arrows, and the fallen wraiths piled up, shocking to the eye. The only difference was that the injured wraiths bled no blood, otherwise, the front of the fortress would be a river of blood.
Still, despite this, a small number of wraiths broke through the arrow rain and survived. These surviving wraiths shared a common trait: they could spit a dark red liquid from their mouths.
The wraiths sprayed the liquid onto the arrows on their bodies, and upon contact, the arrows emitted white smoke and soon were completely corroded away.
"So that’s what the guards meant by weapon corrosion," Mu Yun frowned deeply.
She was well aware that the weapons of the fortress’s ghost soldiers were specially made, capable of effectively harming wraiths and other Netherworld creatures, much like the Soul Hooking Envoy’s Soul-locking Chain that could trap souls. Every type of Netherworld weapon had its specific function.
But even such specially crafted weapons were corroded by the wraiths’ "saliva."
"You’re right. That’s why we plan to forge another batch of new weapons," City Lord Jia said solemnly.
Lin Tian caught the worry in his words. If the new weapons weren’t made in time and the arsenal was depleted, they wouldn’t be able to withstand the wraiths’ harassment.
After corroding the arrows from their bodies, the eyes of the remaining wraiths glowed red as they continued to charge the fortress. The leading wraith suddenly spat out dark red liquid, spraying it onto the city wall.
When the wall came into contact with the liquid, it emitted a "zzzz" sound and bubbled up. In no time, a small patch of the wall was corroded away.
"Even the walls can be corroded!" Zhang Lingyu exclaimed in shock. Honestly, even Lin Tian frowned deeply. If the city wall could be corroded, it meant the entire fortress could possibly be corroded away. If there were enough of these wraiths, it wasn’t without possibility.
City Lord Jia was definitely not discovering this situation for the first time, but his expression was still not good. He gestured to those behind him, and a loud noise erupted from below the city walls as the gate slowly opened.
The wraiths saw the gate opening and rushed towards it in an instant.
"Roar!"
Suddenly a unified roar from the ghost soldiers resounded within the fortress, followed by the dense sound of galloping hooves that grew louder and louder, blending into a continuous roar that made even the city walls seem to shake.
Lin Tian, Xiao Manxuan, and Zhang Lingyu seemed to realize something and simultaneously looked outside the city walls. Just in time, a black steel torrent emerged from the gate, aimed at the wraiths.
It was the fortress’s cavalry group, led at the front by He Shan! Each cavalryman was equipped with a light shield, a single-handed sword, and a spear. As soon as the cavalry group charged out of the gate, they formed a formation, launching a charge against the wraiths.
The cavalry’s charge was fierce and majestic. If the opponents were thinking, conscious beings, they would surely be psychologically oppressed and maybe even flee in panic.
However, the wraiths operated purely on instinct, knowing no fear. Faced with the cavalry group, the wraiths did not back down. On the contrary, they once again spewed out dark red liquid, which was corrosive.
He Shan, leading at the forefront, faced the brunt of it but calmly made a gesture backwards, causing the formation to immediately scatter. The cavalry spread apart and simultaneously raised their shields.
The dark red liquid came pouring over, and the cavalry blocked it with their shields. As expected, upon contact with the liquid, the shields began to dissolve. The liquid that got through splattered on the ghost soldiers’ armor, creating small pits.
The vanguard, He Shan, did not use a shield; he simply waved a spear, and a black aura appeared, blasting all the liquid ahead back.
After the liquid spray ceased, all the cavalry discarded their shields, reassembled the charging formation, and the vanguard was already in front of the wraiths.
The wraiths lunged first; He Shan’s first formation thrust their spears in unison, skewering the wraiths, and at the same time, the rear cavalry accelerated, raising single-handed swords to chop down onto the wraiths’ necks, immediately decapitating them.
This display made Lin Tian’s eyes light up. He had already noted the extraordinary nature of this cavalry group during training, but he hadn’t expected their combat prowess to be so formidable.
Individual cavalrymen might not be strong, but once grouped together, they became a cohesive whole, akin to a master. The cavalry charge was swift, and soon, the remaining wraiths were completely wiped out.
"He Shan! He Shan!" All the ghost soldiers on the city wall shouted in jubilation, and the sound of war drums echoed, celebrating this significant victory.
It was indeed a great victory, with no casualties. Nonetheless, City Lord Jia remained composed, as if it were business as usual. However, Lin Tian knew that such outcomes were the result of relentless training and the sacrifices of many ghost soldiers.
After countless battles, they finally developed this effective strategy. But before this strategy was established, surely many ghost soldiers had perished.
"Those damned wraiths, every attack costs us a batch of equipment. If this continues, we’ll end up throwing stones," City Lord Jia grumbled, looking at the corroded arrows, shields, and heavy cavalry armor outside, feeling rather irritated.
"Sound the retreat bell." City Lord Jia, frustrated, waved his hand and issued the command.
Ding ding ding...
The sound of the retreat bell rang out. Receiving the command, He Shan led the cavalry group to withdraw. Even in victory, the retreat wasn’t chaotic but orderly.
Suddenly, the canyon shook, and rocks fell from both sides as if an earthquake had occurred, followed by a sharp wail echoing from afar.
