Chapter 2049: Chapter 2046: Surrounded (Part 1)
Little Zi was fed with Lin Tian’s blood, and seemed to be particularly fond of him. Every time it was released, as long as he was present, it would come over to please him. Xiao Manxuan, the legitimate owner, felt a bit jealous.
"Little Zi is out, what should it do?" Xiao Manxuan asked curiously.
"Let it drill into the monster’s head and control it," Lin Tian said concisely, leaving the two women stunned.
However, the two women were smart enough to quickly grasp Lin Tian’s intention. Xiao Manxuan pointed to the monster’s head and then said to Little Zi, "Little Zi, go control it."
With a few buzzing sounds, Little Zi landed on the monster’s head, then bit through its skin and flesh, drilling inside. Lin Tian kept an eye on their surroundings while observing the monster’s corpse.
A few minutes passed, and the monster suddenly opened its eyes and started to tremble, its joints emitting an ear-piercing sound. The two beauties were shocked, thinking the monster had revived.
Then they recalled that it was Little Zi causing the effect. Little Zi was a Gu Worm, and controlling someone infested with Gu by Gu Cultivators was one of their skills.
Even though Xiao Manxuan wasn’t a Gu Cultivator and didn’t know Gu Arts, Little Zi was unique and could understand its owner’s commands.
With a few crunching sounds, the monster climbed up, stood straight, and was as tall as a human. If seen in the mist, one hundred percent it would be mistaken for a person. More deadly was that Soul Hunters might mistake it for a companion, realizing only too late something was amiss.
But since Lin Tian had burned its neck earlier, half of the monster’s head hung to the side, supported by its neck bones, looking very eerie.
"Send it ahead for reconnaissance, and to draw fire," Lin Tian reminded the little girl.
"Little Zi, go forward," Xiao Manxuan immediately instructed.
The monster mechanically turned and started to walk forward, though its movements were a bit stiff.
"These monsters seem crafty, can it really fool them?" Xiao Manxuan asked uncertainly, as the monster controlled by Little Zi was too abnormal, its actions visibly rigid.
"Don’t worry, they’re just crafty, not intelligent," Lin Tian reassured the little girl calmly, and then pointed ahead, saying, "Concentrate fully on sensing; as Little Zi’s owner, you should be able to sense the surroundings through it."
Gu Cultivators apply this ability, which is a part of Gu Arts, but Xiao Manxuan was not one, and Lin Tian didn’t know if she could grasp it.
"I’ll try," Xiao Manxuan said, closing her eyes and focusing her mind to sense. Suddenly, a faint trace of information appeared in her mind, showing her a bizarre image.
She opened her eyes with a face full of delight, saying, "There really is something, but it’s strange. The images are not the same as what we see." The little girl was experiencing this ability for the first time, feeling both novel and excited.
Lin Tian laughed and explained, "Those pieces of information were seen through Little Zi, specifically the Ghost Tooth Winged Human Beast’s vision, naturally different from human vision."
Zhang Lingyu nodded in agreement: "Just like the compound eyes of a fly, the eyes of a cat, and other animals’ and beasts’ eyes, the world they see is different from what we see."
"Then I’m relieved; I thought something was wrong," the little girl patted her chest and breathed a sigh of relief.
"It’s already quite good; we have an additional layer of protection, and we have better teamwork than those Soul Hunters," Zhang Lingyu remarked cheerfully.
The Beautiful Sky Master was indeed right. Among the Soul Hunters’ team, there must be many with higher combat power than her, but in this place, combat power doesn’t represent everything. The right skills are crucial for stronger survival ability.
The three set off again. The fog on the wasteland remained dense and perpetual. In such circumstances, being able to navigate and emerge from the fog was a matter of life and death.
"Lin Tian, do you think Shangguan Ao Yue might end up like them?" Xiao Manxuan, walking in the fog, unconsciously lowered her voice, recalling Shangguan Ao Yue’s team also venturing through the wasteland.
"With their abilities, they should be able to cross the wasteland, losing at most some personnel. Having come here, they should be mentally prepared to coexist with death," Lin Tian said unemotionally, unmoved.
The two women fell silent, leaving the surroundings quiet once more, except for the sound of stepping on stones or dried bones.
In the silence, suddenly the sound of "bang bang bang" was heard from afar, as if something was running swiftly. This sound was very distinct, even Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu heard it.
"Is it a monster?" Xiao Manxuan asked in shock.
"No, when monsters attack, they’re almost silent. This footsteps sound chaotic, more like someone running for their life," Lin Tian frowned. Making such loud noises could draw more monsters. Soul Hunters should know this, unless they’re running for their lives, having no choice.
"Over there!" Xiao Manxuan suddenly pointed diagonally forward, as a shadow appeared in Little Zi’s vision, quickly approaching them.
Lin Tian also noticed the shadow but furrowed his brows since it wasn’t a monster, but someone he recognized, though he couldn’t reveal it immediately as the two women didn’t yet know he had supernatural vision.
"Seems like a person?" Zhang Lingyu, with decent eyesight, saw the blurred outline as the shadow approached. Just as she spoke, the shadow suddenly fell, rolled several times, and went still.
Lin Tian immediately ran over, followed closely by the two women, who froze upon seeing the person on the ground.
"Shangguan Hongyue!" Xiao Manxuan widened her eyes, incredulous.
"Why is she alone?" Zhang Lingyu feared a worse scenario.
Sold on the ground was one of the beautiful twins, Shangguan Hongyue, a fragile-defensed assassin, running alone in the wasteland without teammates’ protection—a suicidal act, as monsters are more like assassins than she.
Such unreasonable events likely occurred because Shangguan Ao Yue’s team faced a mishap and was scattered.
Although Shangguan Hongyue’s body was exquisite, particularly encased in tight soft armor highlighting her curves, at this moment, her chest, shoulder, and abdomen sustained three wounds—possible penetrating injuries, now continually bleeding.
Especially the wound on her chest, nobody knew if it had hit her heart.
"Her breath is weak, collapsing earlier probably meant she reached her limit," Zhang Lingyu worriedly said. Although their team isn’t on good terms with hers, there was no animosity.
"What we should be more worried about is what’s chasing her," Lin Tian instead turned towards the direction from which Shangguan Hongyue came.
At this moment, Xiao Manxuan saw something too; her originally rosy cheeks turned deathly pale in an instant. Her voice trembled as she said, "Monsters, five, ten, and many, many monsters... we’ve been surrounded."
As her words fell, many pairs of red glowing eyes emerged from the surrounding fog, identical to the Ghost Tooth Winged Human Beast’s eyes—bloodthirsty, ferocious.
