Chapter 2050: Chapter 2047: Surrounded (Part 2)
The Ghost Tooth Winged Human Beasts didn’t attack immediately, probably because Little Zi was controlling one of their companions. These monsters were likely wondering why one of their own kind was standing on the prey’s side.
"They’re not attacking." Xiao Manxuan also said in confusion.
Lin Tian glanced at the controlled monster and shook his head. "It’s only temporary. Once they lose patience, or see through that ’companion,’ they’ll launch a thunderous assault."
"What do we do? Should we have Little Zi lure them away?" Xiao Manxuan asked cautiously. She wasn’t sure if it would work.
"No. That monster is not their leader; it can’t lure them off. Without it holding them back, it’ll only speed up their attack." Lin Tian frowned, then said to Zhang Lingyu, "While we still have some time, set up a Barrier around us. Remember how we trapped Charlotte?"
Zhang Lingyu’s eyes lit up. "Of course I remember. Fire power combined with a Barrier."
As she spoke, she was about to go arrange the Barrier, but before leaving she felt around her waist, took out a bottle, and handed it to Lin Tian. "This is Healing Medicine. I don’t know if it works on people from the Netherworld."
"We’ll try. Wrong time and place for proper treatment anyway." Lin Tian took the bottle, opened the cap and sniffed. The medicinal scent felt familiar—back when Zhang Lingyu had been treated at the Xiao Family, the medicine had smelled somewhat similar.
Inside the bottle was medicinal powder. He poured some out and applied it to Shangguan Hongyue’s three wounds, without even taking off her Soft armor.
"Mm..." Shangguan Hongyue let out a soft moan, her eyelashes trembled, and her eyes slowly opened. The reaction meant the medicine had stimulated the wounds; as for how effective it would be, Lin Tian had no time to care.
Shangguan Hongyue opened her eyes and saw Lin Tian first—not a monster—and clearly breathed a sigh of relief.
She couldn’t move, only roll her eyes around, and then she saw Xiao Manxuan. Xiao Manxuan was monitoring the surroundings through Little Zi, while Zhang Lingyu was busy setting up the Barrier.
"It’s you..." Shangguan Hongyue’s lips moved, and she forced out a few words with difficulty.
Then she caught sight of pairs of red eyes in the mist. Her gaze instantly tightened. Her hands instinctively went to reach for her dagger, but as soon as she moved, it tugged at her wounds. The pain drained the color from her face and furrowed her brows together, yet this woman was tough enough not to utter a sound.
Lin Tian helped her pick up the dagger and stuffed it into her hand. Shangguan Hongyue gripped the dagger tightly, finally gaining a bit of a sense of security. She looked at Lin Tian and forced out a strained "Thank you."
Lin Tian was quite surprised. This cold-faced assassin, when she wasn’t being icy, actually spoke rather gently. So she was usually just putting on a cold act?
He shook his head and smiled. "Hearing a ’thank you’ from someone of the Shangguan family isn’t easy."
"Elder Sister... she actually..." Shangguan Ziyue wanted to explain something, but her injuries were too severe and she lacked the strength.
Lin Tian waved his hand, cutting her off. Indifferently, he said, "You don’t need to explain, and I don’t want to know her story. Better tell me how you were injured. And why are so many monsters chasing you?"
Shangguan Ziyue stayed silent for a moment. She seemed to have recovered a bit of strength and then said haltingly, "We... ran into Jing Wuxue. His team had only him left. When we were rescuing him, we attracted these exotic beasts. Some beasts in the mist move alone, some in groups—they should be from the same clan."
"Their behavior is a bit like wolf packs in the Human Realm, but wolves attack prey to survive. These monsters aren’t just for survival—they seem to be torturing their prey." Lin Tian narrowed his eyes, sketching out the monsters’ traits.
But why would monsters torture their prey? Another effect of the Blood Sea?
"Maybe you’re right. They weren’t in a hurry to kill us, but surrounded us and kept attacking. The beasts are very fast; we couldn’t break out at all."
"In the end I snuck up to the beasts’ leader and launched a surprise attack, wounded their leader, and the beast pack went berserk. Most of them came after me. I don’t know how many I lured away..." Shangguan Hongyue briefly explained the situation.
Lin Tian’s heart stirred slightly and he said in surprise, "They have a leader?"
"Yes. Their leader is even bigger, and I stabbed its eye. It’s easy to recognize." Shangguan Hongyue explained.
Lin Tian stood up and swept his penetrating gaze over the monsters. Sure enough, one of them was much larger, its claws and fangs more grotesque and sharp, but one of its eyes was a bloody mess.
As he searched for the leader, Shangguan Hongyue also noticed the beast that was being controlled. She said in startled doubt, "That beast...?"
Zhang Lingyu walked back and said, "Relax, that’s a beast we’ve controlled."
"You can control beasts?" Shangguan Hongyue was even more shocked. She had never heard of such a thing. Exotic beasts were incredibly ferocious; it was hard enough to subdue them—how could you control them?
"The beast is already dead. We’re controlling it through Gu arts." Zhang Lingyu didn’t hide anything; there was nothing to hide anyway, since Little Zi could only control the monster’s movements and it had no combat strength.
Shangguan Hongyue’s eyes flickered. In surprise she said, "Gu arts—so it’s an ancient strange art."
This time it was Lin Tian’s turn to be surprised, thinking, Since when did Gu arts become an ancient strange art? But seeing how weak Shangguan Hongyue was, she clearly didn’t have the strength to explain, and the surroundings didn’t allow for it either.
"Lin Tian, the Barrier is set. Your flames now." Zhang Lingyu said calmly, then extended her right hand. A card talisman hovered above her palm, emitting a faint light.
Lin Tian extended a finger and tapped the card. A point of purple flame appeared, then spread, and very soon the purple flame merged with the talisman. This was the Barrier’s core. Now, empowered by the fire element, the Barrier also possessed the might of the purple flame.
At the instant the purple flame appeared, the monsters outside grew restless. Only when the flame vanished again did they calm down.
Shangguan Ziyue, however, was anything but calm. Although the purple flame existed for only a moment, she felt a breath of annihilation from it. At this moment she finally understood that her elder sister Ao Yue had completely misjudged them—these people were in no way spoiled heirs.
Barrier arts, ancient strange arts, destructive flames—with such powerful abilities, were they some kind of playboys? Elder sister was utterly, completely wrong, Shangguan Hongyue thought to herself. If her sister knew the truth, who knew what she would think.
Perhaps stimulated by the purple flame, the monsters became restless again. A sharp, shrill cry suddenly rang out, like a signal to attack.
And indeed, as soon as that cry sounded, the monsters moved. Four monsters attacked from four directions.
"As expected, cunning. They’re probing us." Lin Tian said coldly.
As his voice fell, four shadows seemed to slam into something and were all bounced back. At the same time, purple flames appeared out of thin air. One of the monsters reacted a bit too slow and its arm was burned.
The purple flames spread rapidly, engulfing its entire body in an instant. The monster let out a miserable scream and rolled on the ground.
