Chapter 2051: Chapter 2048: Failed Decapitation
Ssssss...
The sound of meat sizzling rang out. In no time, the monster stopped struggling. When the flames went out, only a small pile of ashes was left on the ground. The scene suddenly fell silent, even the monsters outside stopped their restless agitation.
"Didn’t expect that after the flames leveled up, the power would jump this much." Lin Tian was very satisfied with the result.
Shangguan Hongyue took quite a while to digest that result. She forced herself to ask, "How long can your Barrier hold?"
This time it was Zhang Lingyu’s turn to answer: "Two hours won’t be a problem." Two hours meant four hours, which sounded long, but staying in this heavy fog for four hours was definitely not a good thing.
Sure enough, Shangguan Hongyue still said with difficulty, "If the beasts launch an attack, the Barrier won’t last two hours. They’ll use suicide attacks. Breaking out is our only option."
"You’re not wrong. We’re not going to sit here waiting to die. Breaking out is exactly what I’m going to do." A smile flashed in Lin Tian’s eyes, but when that smile landed in Hongyue’s eyes, her heart suddenly trembled.
Clearly those things outside were the monsters, so why did he look more like a monster? A strange thought popped up in Shangguan Hongyue’s mind.
"Squeee..." A sharp screech suddenly rang out from within the monster horde. The red light in those scarlet eyes around them flared, and the monsters still charged out.
With a bang, the first monster smashed into the Barrier. But it didn’t retreat, letting the violet flames burn over its body as it frantically rammed the Barrier, tearing and biting with its sharp claws and teeth. In no time, that monster collapsed and turned to ashes.
But it didn’t stop. Another monster rushed up, still ramming the Barrier, exactly like Shangguan Hongyue had said—suicide attacks.
Two, four, eight... Under the command of the monster leader, the monsters launched desperate charges. The originally stable Barrier began to flicker, and Zhang Lingyu’s brows furrowed deeply as she watched.
"Lingyu, keep an eye on Xuanxuan and Shangguan Hongyue... and also, watch your own safety." Lin Tian lifted the Heavenly Tribulation Sword and spoke calmly.
Hearing that last line, that he still remembered to worry about her, the Beautiful Sky Master felt a sweetness rise in her heart. But before she could say anything, Lin Tian had already dashed out.
The Heavenly Tribulation Sword in his hand ignited with violet flames. With one swing, he cleaved down on a monster that had just glided past. Empowered by the power of fire, the Heavenly Tribulation Sword was almost unstoppable—and this was the upgraded version of that fire power.
The Heavenly Tribulation Sword chopped into the monster’s shoulder and slanted out. Half its body separated and immediately caught fire.
Lin Tian ignored the monsters attacking the Barrier and instead charged in one direction—that was where the monster leader was.
"Squeee..." Another piercing screech rang out as the monster leader sent out new orders. A whole pack of monsters instantly rushed toward Lin Tian.
They weren’t as many as during the Evil Spirit Tide, but the monsters were much faster. Lin Tian had just chopped one down when his vision suddenly went dark—the monsters were swarming at him like a tidal wave, all baring fangs and claws. In those huge jaws, black liquid slid over rows of razor teeth and dripped down, both disgusting and vicious.
"Go save him, now!" Shangguan Hongyue was shocked. She clenched her dagger, ready to get up and charge out.
But as soon as she moved, the world spun violently. She almost passed out and had to rely on sheer willpower just to cling to that last shred of consciousness. Her whole body was limp and weak; she couldn’t stand up again. She could only stare helplessly as Lin Tian was surrounded and swallowed up by the monsters.
Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu didn’t move, and although they trusted Lin Tian, their fists still clenched tight. The horrific state of the Soul Hunters had left too deep an impression on them.
Suddenly, a violet light burst out from within the monster horde, the glow piercing through every monster’s body. Then came a thunderous boom as violet flames exploded like a mushroom cloud. The monsters closest to the blast didn’t even have time to scream before they were burned to ashes.
It was like a nuke going off—fire and smoke roared up into the sky, instantly evaporating the fog. The violet flames rode the shockwave, sweeping forward along the ground.
The bones on the ground burned to ash. Any monster that reacted too slowly turned into a torch. One blazing monster after another ran wildly around the field, shrieking in agony. Before long, the screams faded and the monsters collapsed.
When the smoke cleared, Lin Tian stood in the center of the field, sword in one hand. Violet flames still burned along the blade. The gravel and stones around him had been scorched and melted, fusing into a rocklike surface. The ground was crimson, radiating waves of searing heat.
In this crimson domain that felt like a forbidden zone, not a single monster was left alive.
Shangguan Hongyue stared, dumbfounded. Was this still that reckless, brainless playboy her big sister had described?
Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu both let out a breath and smiled. Yet as Zhang Lingyu smiled, a faint worry flickered deep in her eyes.
His strength was rising too fast. Sooner or later it would draw the attention of the Demon Exorcism World. Was that going to be a blessing or a curse? Uneasy thoughts churned in Zhang Lingyu’s heart.
"Lingyu, looks like the monsters have stopped attacking." Xiao Manxuan patted the Beautiful Sky Master, pulling her back to reality.
"Lin Tian’s violet flames just leveled up not long ago. An attack this intense definitely scared the monsters—or rather, scared their leader. But we made a lot of noise just now. No idea if that will attract other monster packs." Zhang Lingyu analyzed calmly.
"Lin Tian, don’t get bogged down fighting them. Find a way to break out." Zhang Lingyu lowered her voice and shouted.
"Their leader isn’t retreating. Looks like it doesn’t intend to let us break out. I’ll keep pushing the decapitation plan." Lin Tian gave his sword a little flick and said coldly.
His figure flashed as he charged toward the monster leader. Suddenly, the leader spread its arms, unfurling the bat wings under them. Those massive wings were several times bigger than a normal monster’s.
The leader leapt, soaring high as its wings spread. It actually flew off like a huge bird. The other monsters retreated like receding tidewater. Lin Tian rushed over and swung, but slashed nothing but air—the decapitation attempt failed, leaving him very awkward.
"Screw your grandpa, you think you’re hot shit just because you can fly?" Lin Tian, pissed off, grabbed a Stone and hurled it. Unfortunately, the monster leader had already vanished into the thick fog.
Lin Tian had been through this kind of fight several times—when the enemy couldn’t win, they just flew off. It was infuriating. If only he could fly like Qingyao, none of these ’birdmen’ would be a problem.
Of course, annoyance was annoyance, but Lin Tian wasn’t stupid enough to chase them. If another monster horde attacked Xiao Manxuan and the others while he was gone, that would be game over for real.
He sheathed the Heavenly Tribulation Sword and walked back into the Barrier, only to find Shangguan Hongyue staring blankly at him. Lin Tian easily guessed why.
Before, in their eyes, he had been a useless playboy, a reckless kid who didn’t know fear. Now he’d completely overturned her perception. There was no way this beautiful assassin’s heart could stay calm.
"We misjudged you..." Shangguan Hongyue moved her lips and forced out a few words, but before she could finish, her head lolled to the side and she fainted.
"She’s not going to die, right?" Xiao Manxuan asked nervously. After all, Shangguan Hongyue wasn’t as hard to get along with as her big sister. The little girl’s impression of her was slightly better.
Lin Tian bent down to check her over and shook his head. "She won’t die for now. She’s got the blood of Xiu Luo and Yaksha in her; she’s not that easy to kill. But from here on, we’ll have to carry her the rest of the way."
