10,000x Rebate System: Every Return Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 51: Infiltration [4]Amon finally emerged from the water with Ambrosia still held securely in his arms.
The waterfall continued roaring behind them, drowning out most of the sounds from the forest as cold water dripped from their clothes.
Ambrosia was shivering badly by the time Amon carried her several steps away from the river.
He carefully placed her down on her feet and looked around.
The forest was almost completely dark, with only a faint glow from the moon slipping between the thick branches above them.
Amon narrowed his eyes as he tried to see through the darkness. "We need to find somewhere safe and stay here for the night."
Ambrosia immediately slapped his forearm. "Don’t ever do something like that again!"
Amon rubbed his arm and chuckled. "It worked, didn’t it?"
"You jumped off a waterfall!"
"I had a plan."
"You didn’t even tell me what the plan was!"
Amon smiled before turning toward the forest. "You’re alive, aren’t you?"
Ambrosia opened her mouth to argue, but a sudden sneeze escaped her instead. "Ah-choo!"
Amon glanced back at her. "...You sound like a little girl."
Ambrosia glared at him while rubbing her arms. "I’m freezing, you idiot."
Amon shook his head and continued walking.
They slowly moved deeper into the forest, keeping away from the sound of the waterfall while searching for somewhere that wasn’t completely soaked.
After several minutes, Ambrosia suddenly remembered something. "Amon, what about the camera?"
"It’s safe." He didn’t even look back as he answered. "It’s inside my spatial bracelet, so you don’t need to worry about it."
Ambrosia nodded in relief. "Good. That evidence is important."
"I know."
They continued walking until Amon finally found a small patch of relatively dry ground beneath several large trees.
It wasn’t comfortable, but it was sheltered from most of the wind, and the ground wasn’t nearly as wet as the surrounding area.
"We’ll stay here."
Ambrosia looked around before nodding. "I suppose it will do."
Amon immediately got to work.
He gathered several pieces of dry wood from beneath the trees and arranged them in a small pile before reaching into his spatial bracelet.
He pulled out a metal lighter.
Ambrosia stared at it before looking at him. "Are you smoking now?"
Amon looked at the lighter in his hand. "No. I bought it for emergencies."
He flicked the wheel, and a small flame immediately appeared.
Within a few minutes, the dry wood caught fire, and warm orange light spread across the surrounding darkness.
Ambrosia moved closer to the flames and stretched her hands toward the heat.
Amon also stretched his arms and rolled his shoulders, feeling the soreness from the day’s events slowly settle into his muscles.
He looked down at his soaked clothes and sighed. "This is going to be annoying."
Amon removed his black robe and shirt before squeezing the water from them.
Ambrosia glanced toward him and suddenly smiled. "I still can’t believe my son has gotten into such good shape."
Amon looked at her.
She leaned forward slightly, narrowing her eyes as she examined him. "You actually have a really good physique now."
Amon shook his head. "Don’t stare too much."
"Why not? I’m your mother."
"That makes it worse."
Ambrosia laughed softly.
Amon ignored her and reached into his spatial bracelet again, pulling out a thick blanket.
He handed it to her. "Get out of those wet clothes and wrap this around yourself."
Ambrosia looked at the blanket before looking at the bracelet on his wrist.
"Do you have anything better?"
Amon shook his head. "No."
She groaned quietly. "Fine."
Ambrosia took the blanket and stood up as Amon immediately turned around.
Behind him, he heard the soft rustle of wet fabric sliding over skin.
The sound of her clothes hitting the ground seemed louder than it should have in the stillness.
After several seconds, Ambrosia’s playful voice suddenly came from behind him. "Do you want to take a peek?"
Amon raised an eyebrow. "Can I?"
"No."
"...Then why did you ask?"
Ambrosia giggled. "I just wanted to see what you’d say."
Amon shook his head and continued staring into the darkness.
After a short while, Ambrosia finally spoke. "Okay, I’m ready."
Amon turned around.
She was now in the blanket, wrapped tightly around her shoulders.
Her damp hair still hung around her face, but the warmth from the fire was slowly bringing some color back to her cheeks.
Amon looked at her for a moment before clearing away some of the leaves and dirt from the ground.
He placed another blanket down. "Sit here."
He sat down on one side of the blanket while Ambrosia lowered herself beside him.
The blanket shifted as she moved, revealing a brief glimpse of bare thigh before she pulled it closed again.
The fire crackled quietly between them, and the two of them could still hear the roaring of the wyvern from here.
Ambrosia leaned back slightly and let out a long yawn. "Ahh... I’m exhausted."
Amon glanced at her. "You should sleep."
"I know." She remained awake anyway.
For a while, they simply listened to the forest around them.
The distant waterfall continued roaring while insects occasionally chirped from somewhere within the trees.
Eventually, Ambrosia spoke. "Amon."
"Hm?"
"Thank you."
Amon looked toward her. "For what?"
"For saving me."
Amon shrugged. "It was my duty."
Ambrosia smiled faintly. "I didn’t know my son had become such a gentleman."
Amon looked away. "I just didn’t want you to die this young."
Ambrosia’s eyes widened slightly before a teasing smile appeared. "Careful with words like that."
Amon frowned. "Why?"
"Old ladies might fall for you if you keep flirting like that."
Amon immediately became silent.
Ambrosia laughed softly at his expression before slowly leaning her head against his shoulder.
Amon stiffened slightly as he looked down at her but didn’t move away.
After a few seconds, Ambrosia’s voice became quieter. "What you said earlier really hurt me."
Amon remained silent.
"When you said you should have died instead of Gordon..." She closed her eyes. "I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, but hearing it still felt terrible."
Amon lowered his gaze.
Ambrosia continued speaking softly.
"You changed a lot after that accident." She paused before continuing. "You became much more mature, and you started doing things on your own without waiting for someone to help you."
Her voice carried a quiet warmth. "You even took care of Sidney when I couldn’t be there."
Ambrosia’s breathing gradually became slower. "I’m really grateful for that."
Amon didn’t know what to say.
After hesitating for a moment, he gently placed his hand over hers and rubbed it softly.
His gaze remained fixed on the flames.
The flickering fire suddenly reminded him of another fire.
The fire from that day... The car accident.
Amon’s eyes became distant as the memory slowly resurfaced.
He remembered sitting in the back seat while Gordon sat in the front beside Amon’s father.
Then everything changed.
The sound of metal twisting, the violent impact, and the smell of smoke.
When Amon opened his eyes, the car was already burning.
His father was dead, but Gordon was still alive.
Amon remembered stumbling out of the wreckage, completely confused and disoriented.
He didn’t understand where he was or what had happened.
He had only just transmigrated into this world, and his mind had been overwhelmed by the sudden memories of a life that wasn’t his.
Then he heard Gordon.
"Amon..." The man’s voice was weak and desperate. "Help me."
Amon remembered looking back.
Gordon was trapped inside the burning vehicle, his body badly injured while flames continued spreading around him.
For several seconds, the newly transmigrated Amon simply stood there.
He was terrified, and he didn’t know what to do.
So he ran.
He remembered taking several steps away from the burning car before stopping.
His feet refused to move any farther.
Amon clenched his fists as he remembered turning around.
He rushed back toward the wreckage, but before he could reach it, the damaged vehicle suddenly exploded.
The blast sent him flying through the air.
Amon stared silently into the fire in front of him.
His hand continued gently rubbing Ambrosia’s hand.
’...I tried.’
