10,000x Rebate System: Every Return Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 81: A Strange Loving FamilyThe soldiers remained in the hospital corridor for another twenty minutes.
They asked Amon several questions about the kidnapping, the vehicles, the attackers, and everything he had seen during the chase.
Amon answered as accurately as he could while Richard guided him, although he deliberately stopped Amon from giving too much information.
Once they had finished taking his statement, Richard took the soldiers with him somewhere.
The corridor slowly became quiet again.
Amon remained outside Ambrosia’s room while Sidney stayed inside with her.
He sat on the bench for a while, staring at the closed door.
’I really need to earn more money so I can force Ambrosia to an early retirement.’ He thought to himself. ’...I am ready to throw a ton of money as well if it means she is safe.’
Amon was already mentally drained just thinking about all the possibilities if he had not dropped her off today.
The possibility of losing her made Amon rather dull. ’...Looks like I care a lot more about her than I thought.’
Every few minutes, his eyes would move toward the room, and eventually, Amon stood up.
He pushed the door open and walked inside.
Sidney was sitting beside their mother, her arms crossed as she stared at the machines connected to Ambrosia.
She slowly looked toward him. "Are you okay?"
Amon nodded. "I’m fine."
He pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down beside her.
His eyes settled on Ambrosia’s sleeping face.
The steady beeping of the monitoring device filled the room, reminding him that she was still here.
Sidney remained quiet for several seconds before asking. "What happened?"
Amon glanced at her. "Some people attacked her."
Her expression morphed into annoyance and anger. "That’s all?"
"That’s all I can tell you," Amon replied calmly.
"I am not a kid anymore, Amon." She retorted in anger. "You can tell me more."
Amon shook his head. "There’s nothing you need to worry about."
"Nothing?" Her voice rose slightly. "Mother was almost killed, Amon!"
Amon remained calm as he stared at Ambrosia without looking at the girl.
Sidney clenched her fists. "You weren’t even here when I found out! I thought she was dead!"
Amon looked at her for a moment before speaking quietly. "But she’s alive."
Sidney fell silent.
"She’s alive," Amon repeated. "That’s what matters right now."
Sidney looked away, her anger slowly giving way to fear. "You always do this."
"Do what?"
"You act like I am a child to be taken care of." She whispered slowly. "Like I can’t be more than just a mouth."
"..."
Amon remained silent as he stared at her for a long second.
Sidney glared at him. "You really know how to piss me off."
"I didn’t even say anything." Amon groaned softly. "You seem to enjoy arguing with me."
"I absolutely do not."
"You’re still doing it."
Sidney opened her mouth before closing it again.
For a moment, the argument felt less like a fight and more like the familiar bickering between two people who depended on each other.
Eventually, Sidney sighed and turned back toward their mother.
The door opened again, and Richard stepped inside. "Amon."
Amon looked toward him.
Richard motioned toward the corridor. "Come outside for a second."
Amon stood and followed him.
Once they were outside, Richard lowered his voice. "I settled things with the soldiers. Your statement has been recorded, and they’ll handle the official side of the investigation."
Amon nodded his head, with a grateful look on his face.
Richard studied his face. "And keep yourself safe."
"I’ll be fine," Amon replied calmly.
"I know you’re strong, but don’t do anything stupid."
Amon smiled slightly. "You’re starting to sound like my mother."
"Don’t do that comparison." Richard sighed before continuing. "You should also visit the Adventurer Bureau when you have time."
Amon raised an eyebrow. "For what?"
"They have proper training rooms. You can test your abilities there without worrying about destroying equipment or getting yourself into trouble."
Amon thought about it for a moment. "That actually isn’t a bad idea."
Richard nodded. "Good. Get some proper training before the college screening."
Amon nodded before opening the door again. "I’ll see you soon then."
He returned to the room and sat down beside Sidney.
For a while, neither of them spoke, but Sidney suddenly reached out and grabbed his arm.
Amon looked at her without saying anything.
"When I heard what happened to Mother..." Her voice became quieter. "I was scared I was going to lose her."
Amon remained silent.
Sidney slowly leaned against him. "Just like I lost Father."
Amon didn’t know what to say. He simply allowed her to rest against his shoulder.
She remained there for a while before quietly speaking again. "I really want a father in my life."
Amon looked at her, but he didn’t say anything. The room became silent once again.
---
Several hours passed before Ambrosia finally opened her eyes.
The first thing she noticed was the ceiling, after which came the faint beeping of the monitoring device beside her.
Ambrosia slowly turned her head, and a smile appeared on her tired face.
Sidney was asleep beside the bed, but she wasn’t sitting anymore.
Her head was resting comfortably on Amon’s lap.
Amon sat quietly in the chair, gently patting Sidney’s head while looking toward Ambrosia.
He noticed her eyes opening. "Ambrosia..."
Ambrosia blinked slowly. "Amon..."
"How are you feeling?" He asked with a slight smile.
"My head hurts a little."
"That’s normal." Amon pointed at her arm. "You were poisoned."
Ambrosia frowned. "What happened?"
Amon gave her a brief explanation of the kidnapping, leaving out some of the more violent details.
"They attacked you outside the courthouse. I chased them and managed to get you back."
Ambrosia listened quietly.
Amon tried to keep his expression normal, but she could see through him easily.
"You are angry," she said with a blank look on her face.
Amon smiled. "Why would I be angry?"
"Because I know you." She looked into his eyes. "Don’t do anything reckless against the Cordo family."
Amon remained silent for a moment. "I won’t do anything stupid."
That was technically a promise he made to Richard, but inside his mind, things were very different.
’I’ll find another way.’ Amon continued patting Sidney’s head. ’If I can’t destroy them directly, I’ll ruin them piece by piece.’
Ambrosia glanced toward Sidney. "She’s really cute when she’s sleeping."
Amon looked down at her. "She is."
He continued gently patting her hair. There was something strangely peaceful about the sight.
For once, Amon didn’t feel like the troublesome younger sister was a bother.
Ambrosia noticed the bruise across his face.
Her smile slowly faded. "You were hurt."
Amon touched his cheek. "It’s nothing."
Ambrosia stared at him, and she understood... The attack hadn’t merely frightened him.
He had come dangerously close to losing his life because of her.
She slowly reached out and touched his hand. "Amon..."
"Hm?"
She looked toward Sidney before returning her gaze to him.
"I’ve decided something." She whispered softly. "I’m not going to pursue the Cordo family anymore."
Amon blinked his eyes. "What?"
Ambrosia smiled sadly. "I’m withdrawing the case."
"You’re backing down now?" Amon’s voice became frustrated. "After everything they’ve done?"
Ambrosia gently grabbed his hand.
"I know." She squeezed it. "But I want to be a little selfish this time."
Amon stared at her before his gaze turned toward her hand.
Ambrosia’s eyes softened.
"I want to see you safe." Her voice trembled slightly as she continued. "I don’t want to attend your funeral or let you be burdened by my death because I decided to fight people who were too powerful for us."
Amon remained completely silent.
Ambrosia smiled faintly.
"I already lost my husband." Her fingers tightened around his hand. "I don’t want to lose you too."
