Maria.

The moment I realized Vincent was chasing after me, a wave of relief quietly washed over me.

At least my plan had worked.

Leaving the room had truly been the best decision.

With Vincent’s attention completely focused on me, Noah would finally be safe.

He would not have to remain trapped in that cramped hiding spot any longer.

Hopefully, once things settled down, he could quietly slip away without anyone noticing.

That thought alone eased some of the tension that had been weighing heavily on my chest.

Even if I had to deal with Vincent’s persistence for a while longer, it was still worth it.

As long as Noah remained unharmed.

I continued walking until I reached what was supposed to be my room. The moment I stepped inside, I heard hurried footsteps behind me and before I could even close the door, Vincent caught up with me.

"Maria," he called out gently.

The next thing I knew, his hands had wrapped around my wrists.

Without giving me the chance to react, he gently spun me around until I was facing him, and his expression was filled with excitement.

Why on earth was he excited?

"I’m really sorry for doubting your words," he said sincerely, as a bright smile spread across his face. "Now I know you love me."

The confidence in his voice almost made me sigh and I immediately rolled my eyes, refusing to meet his overly pleased expression.

At the same time, I gently tried to pull my wrists free from his grip.

"There is no problem, Vincent," I replied as calmly as I could manage while I took a slow breath before continuing. "But I still want to be alone." My tone remained polite despite my growing frustration. "So please... leave the room."

For a brief moment, he simply looked at me, and then he parted his lips again.

"Maria, I want—"

I didn’t even let him finish.

"What now?" I interrupted, raising my eyes toward him with obvious annoyance. "Are you going to tell me someone is hidden in here too?"

The sarcasm in my voice was impossible to miss.

Instead of looking offended, Vincent suddenly chuckled, and his smile only grew wider.

"You’re pretty when you’re angry," he said out of nowhere.

I blinked.

For a moment, I was completely speechless.

Geez! I cursed inwardly.

What sort of a man is this?

Did he ever actually listen to anything I said?

It did not seem like it.

Every time I spoke, he somehow managed to ignore the point entirely and respond with whatever happened to be on his mind.

It was as though my words never reached him at all.

Feeling thoroughly irritated, I gave up trying to reason with him.

I turned around without another word and walked over to the bed.

With a frustrated sigh, I sat down, hoping he would finally get the message, but Vincent immediately followed after me.

Without the slightest hesitation, he walked over and sat down on the bed beside me—not just beside me but far too close, as there was barely any space between us.

It was almost as though he deliberately wanted to invade every bit of my personal space.

I instinctively shifted ever so slightly, but it hardly made a difference.

He remained there, sitting so close that I couldn’t help comparing him to a persistent pest that had only one purpose—to frustrate me.

A quiet sigh escaped my lips.

Was giving me a moment of peace really that difficult?

Before I could gather my thoughts, he spoke again.

"Maria, I really can not live without you."

The declaration came so suddenly that I almost laughed.

Instead, I simply rolled my eyes.

"You can, Vincent," I replied, doing my best to keep my voice calm despite the irritation bubbling inside me. "You’ve managed to live without me all these years." I glanced at him briefly before looking away again. "You survived just fine before I came into your life."

Vincent let out a soft chuckle.

There wasn’t the slightest trace of embarrassment on his face.

"That’s because I hadn’t fallen in love with you then," he answered calmly, as his eyes never left mine.

He stared at me with such unwavering intensity that it became increasingly uncomfortable.

"I love you, Maria." He added, as his voice softened. "And I’m ready to do anything to have you."

For a brief moment, neither of us spoke, and then he slowly leaned toward me.

The distance between our faces disappeared in seconds.

It didn’t take long for me to realize what he intended to do.

He was trying to kiss me.

Without thinking twice, I immediately pulled away, creating as much distance as I could.

My heart beat a little faster, more from surprise than anything else.

"We aren’t married, Vincent," I blurted out.

The excuse had taken several seconds to form because my mind had gone completely blank.

It was the first thing I could think of.

I waited for the inevitable argument.

I expected him to insist that our marriage was already certain.

Or to remind me that it was only a matter of time before we became husband and wife.

Instead...there was silence.

To my complete surprise, Vincent remained calm, and his expression didn’t change.

"I’ll wait until we’re married, Maria," he said quietly.

There wasn’t any anger or frustration in his voice.

With those words, he rose from the bed.

I watched him in stunned silence as he walked toward the door.

When he reached it, he paused briefly without turning around.

"I have other business to attend to." Another short pause followed, and then he added firmly, "Bear in mind, Maria... you belong to me."

The words lingered in the room long after they left his lips.

Without waiting for a response, he opened the door and walked out.

The door clicked shut behind him.

I remained seated exactly where I was—stunned, shocked and somehow...even more annoyed than before.
