VINCENT.

Everyone knows me as a ruthless, unyielding man—a person whose heart is as cold as stone and whose resolve has never once been shaken. They know me as someone who has never allowed a woman to stand by his side, and they are not wrong.

Well, every single one of those things is completely true.

With the power I possess and the status I carry, all it would have taken was a single word, and countless women would have willingly come to me. Yet despite having every opportunity, I have never laid a hand on any of them, not even once.

Anabel was the first woman I had ever laid, the only one to break through my icy detachment, and I selfishly didn’t want her to ever be touched by another man in the same way—especially not Noah. The very thought of him laying a hand on her made a dark, vicious jealousy burn through my blood.

So how could I possibly let her go?

It was completely out of the question. If worse comes to worst and she demands a proper, official standing by my side, I could always make her my concubine. And that way, even when I eventually kill her brothers and tear her world apart, she would be forced to remain by my side regardless of her hatred for me. She would belong to me forever.

Deepening the kiss further, pouring all of my possessive rage and desire into her mouth, I led her to lay flat on the soft mattress of the bed, pressing my body down over hers.

I immediately swallowed hard, my chest rising and falling heavily as I savored every single inch and bit of her. She was still completely naked, exposed and vulnerable as a direct result of our passionate deeds earlier. But somehow, bathed in the dim light of the room, she was even more tempting now than she had been before.

And that was it; the absolute tipping point. My wolf couldn’t resist the intoxicating draw of our bond, and I completely devoured her, taking her with a fierce, unbridled intensity until the world outside faded away and the only name she could call out or think of was mine.

By the time I opened my eyes again, everywhere in the room had darkened a bit, the soft twilight fading into the shadowed calm of early evening.

And resting quietly in my arms was a soundly sleeping Anabel. Even in her exhausted slumber, with her dark hair splayed across the pillows, she was still temptingly beautiful. Feeling her warm skin against mine, my wolf roared loudly within my chest, practically purring from absolute satisfaction.

And crazily enough, despite having spent hours with her, he already wanted more. The hunger was insatiable.

I shook my head immediately, forcing myself to break the haze of lust and get rid of those lingering desires before they consumed me again.

I carefully stood up from the bed, moving with quiet precision as I untangled myself from her, doing my absolute best not to wake her from her peaceful sleep.

I had let myself get distracted for long enough. I needed to step out and attend to a lot of critical things before the night slipped away.

I walked out of the room, shutting the door quietly behind me, and went straight towards my study to focus on the heavy responsibilities waiting for me.

Once inside, I buried myself deep into the detailed territory map spread across the heavy wooden desk. I meticulously analyzed every border, patrol route, and blind spot, trying my best to ensure absolute security to avoid any potential breach.

I had to ensure I didn’t give those scheming Alphas the slightest chance to plot against me or launch a surprise strike in order to overthrow my rule. It would be a great disaster if they succeeded, and above all else, I needed to ensure Maria’s safety.

Nothing must happen to her—not on my watch—as I wasn’t at all sure I could survive in a world without her by my side.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, I immediately opened the mind link to Alaric, commanding him to get the rest of the invitation letters completely done with, without delay.

I made it crystal clear that I didn’t care how he got it done, only that all the regional Alphas must be present at the estate by tomorrow. Although some of the distinguished guests had arrived already, the rest needed to be here on time for the ceremony.

While still linked, I also dropped the map on which I had carefully highlighted the specific vulnerabilities where security had to be exceptionally tight, telling him he could come pick it up from my desk later to execute the arrangements.

With that urgent task out of the way, I stood up from my chair and moved with practiced ease down the quiet corridors, instinctively heading towards Maria’s room. I missed her so badly already, the constant pull toward her dragging at my mind.

But right in the middle of those longing thoughts, Anabel’s tear-stained face suddenly surfaced in my mind’s eye, striking me with an unexpected, disorienting force.

*I must be going crazy,* I thought, my chest tightening as a sudden wave of inner turmoil washed over me.

I immediately came to a complete halt right in the middle of the hallway, frozen as I suddenly became a bit confused by the chaotic war raging inside my chest.

I really didn’t know where to head to any longer, completely paralyzed by the conflicting instincts pulling at my soul. I was utterly torn between two distinct paths, unable to take another step in either direction.

Should I turn around and go back to the room to be with my mate, who had so violently stirred my wolf and awakened a strange, fierce protectiveness within me?

Or should I keep walking forward to see the woman I have come to love over all these while?

"Damn it!" I cursed aloud, my voice echoing darkly against the empty walls of the corridor.
