Maria.
Everything was finally sorted out at last. The meticulous details of the escape plan were locked into place, and the suffocating weight that had been pressing down on my chest finally began to lift. I would finally leave this gilded cage and be together with Noah again, putting all of this nightmare far behind me.
I really don’t know why he didn’t show up while we were all discussing the whole issue, but I guessed he was simply trying to avoid Vincent’s watchful eyes. It made sense; bringing himself into the open while tension ran this high would have compromised everything we were trying to build.
Vincent, on the other hand, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying wherever he was, because I had heard through the quiet whispers in the hallway that he hadn’t stepped out of his room for hours. His absence was a rare blessing, giving us the breathing room we so desperately needed.
I lay quietly on my bed, staring up at the ceiling as a flutter of excitement stirred in my heart, imagining what freedom would feel like. Suddenly, the soft rhythm of a knock on the door broke through the silence.
"Come in!" I called out, my voice smooth and unbothered.
I knew deep down it was probably just one of the house omegas coming to serve dinner, as they usually did around this time.
The door opened slowly, swinging inward with a subtle creak, and the figure entered inside. But as the door clicked shut behind them, a cold wave of suspicion hit me—strangely, the figure had no scent at all.
The air remained completely neutral, blank of any recognizable aura. It was more like the wolf had deliberately masked their scent to hide their true identity.
I immediately got up from the mattress, every instinct going on high alert as the masked wolf began coming closer to me with slow, confident strides.
Just before I could react or even raise my guard to defend myself, the wolf was already standing directly in front of me. In a flash, he instantly leaned in, closing the remaining distance before capturing my lips in a sudden, forceful kiss.
My eyes widened in absolute shock, my pulse spiking wildly as I stared right into his face—only for me to meet a pair of striking, familiar grey eyes staring back at me.
Davian.
A surge of pure rage eclipsed my shock. I immediately shoved him away with all the strength I could muster, breaking his hold, and raised my hand to slap him hard across his face. The sharp, loud crack echoed through the quiet room.
"Why did you play such a trick on me?" I demanded, my voice thick with utter annoyance as my chest rose and fell in quick, uneven breaths.
I glared at him with burning indignation, my eyes narrowed into sharp slits, silently daring him to give me one good reason for frightening me like that.
"Relax, Maria!" he replied, his tone infuriatingly casual, as though nothing unusual had happened. He lifted a hand and gently pressed it against his reddened cheek, wincing ever so slightly. "That hurts," he complained, looking at me with an odd mixture of surprise and a shameless, utterly unrepentant smirk that only made my temper flare hotter.
I rolled my eyes so hard they almost hurt, a wave of sheer irritation surging through me. The heat of my anger burned fiercely in my chest, refusing to settle. My fingers slowly curled into tight fists at my sides, every muscle in my body tensing. At that moment, I was completely prepared to hit him again for daring to sneak up on me like that and scare me half to death.
"I was trying to avoid drawing any unwanted attention as I came here," he added quickly, holding his hands up in a placating gesture as if that somehow justified his outrageous stunt. "Look—" he said, pointing towards the small table near the door where a covered tray sat. "I even had to bring the food myself just to have an excuse." He added, looking at me as though he expected praise for his clever disguise.
I hissed instantly, letting out a sharp, bitter sound of disgust.
"So, why go through all that unnecessary stress?" I asked immediately, without a single moment of hesitation.
It was so incredibly risky for any of them to come anywhere near my quarters right now. My true identity hadn’t been revealed to anyone in this territory yet, and a single misplaced step or a whisper of suspicion could blow our cover and ruin everything before we even had a chance to execute our escape.
"I just wanted to spend time with you, Maria!" he blurted out, his grey eyes softening with a sudden, raw honesty that caught me entirely off guard.
I took a long, deep breath, trying to force my rising temperature back down, and stared at him in absolute annoyance.
How could he be so incredibly dumb?
Was he completely blind to the life-and-death stakes of what we were trying to pull off?
Haven’t I been surrounded by them and dealing with their endless presence all this while?
So why on earth did he feel the sudden, desperate urge to see me and spend even more time with me again right at the most dangerous moment possible?
"Get out, Davian!" I ordered with heavy irritation, pointing a sharp, unyielding finger toward the exit. "Do not be the reason our carefully crafted plan fails!" I added, throwing every ounce of cold authority into my voice to make him realize the gravity of his carelessness.
"I don’t want to!" he said firmly, stubbornness locking his jaw as he planted his feet firmly on the floor, refusing to budge an inch.
I raised my brows up in complete annoyance, incredulous that he was choosing this exact second to throw a tantrum.
But instantly, just before I could open my mouth to chew him out properly, the sharp, distinct sound of heavy footsteps echoing down the quiet hallway outside reached my ears.
My heart instantly dropped into my stomach, and I panicked.
Oh no!
