Davian.

Today was that inevitable day of the month when each male Alpha craved their mate so badly that the hunger threatened to consume them from the inside out.

And I was no exception to that primal rule.

I could clearly see the torture each of my brothers was going through, watching them struggle against the overwhelming pull of their inner beasts.

But I simply couldn’t take mine anymore; the burning ache in my chest was unbearable. So, I had to take extreme measures: I masked my scent completely and snuck out of my room under the cover of quiet shadow.

It was getting darker with every passing minute, the night bleeding across the sky, but I just didn’t mind the risk. I had even planned to sleep over there in her quarters, consequences be damned.

And now that I had finally managed to get here—after quietly knocking out an unsuspecting omega to steal her tray—she was standing there, glaring at me and asking me to leave.

No way in hell.

"I don’t want to!" I said firmly, locking my posture.

Maria opened her mouth to speak, clearly annoyed and ready to tear into me, but I actually didn’t care about her reprimands.

Her harsh words didn’t come out anyway, as the sudden, distinct sound of footsteps approaching down the hallway reached our ears. Panic seized her frame instantly, and just like her, I panicked too. Cold sweat prickled my neck.

Would I really be the reason our carefully orchestrated plan fails before we even get the chance to move?

But on a second thought, as the footsteps drew nearer, a dark realization washed over me.

If it so happened to be who I was thinking, was this how he went in and out of Maria’s room so casually, even when it was getting dark?

The footsteps came to an abrupt halt right outside the heavy wooden frame, and the door swung open.

And indeed, it was him.

I immediately bowed my head down, lowering my posture instantly to mimic how a humble omega would behave in the presence of an Alpha, hiding my features in the shadows.

"Maria!" Vincent called out softly, his voice carrying an unfamiliar gentleness as he stepped into the room.

The quiet sound of her name drifted through the air, calm and careful, lacking even the slightest hint of urgency as his gaze settled on her.

Maria didn’t move an inch.

She remained rooted exactly where she stood, her body completely still, almost as though she had turned into a statue. Even from where I stood, I could easily tell she was trying with every ounce of her strength to steady herself.

She fought to calm the storm of emotions threatening to surface, carefully schooling her features into a neutral expression.

Though her face revealed almost nothing, the rigid set of her shoulders and the faint tension in her posture betrayed the effort it took to maintain that composure.

"Are you okay?" Vincent asked gently as he walked farther into the room, his brows drawing together with quiet concern.

His steps slowed as his eyes briefly landed on the untouched tray of food I had brought in earlier. He lingered on it for only a moment before lifting his gaze back to Maria, giving her his full attention once more.

"Is the food not to your taste?" he asked, genuine concern evident in both his voice and the searching look in his eyes.

"Why do you care? It’s not like you would do anything I want anyways," Maria said, her tone flattening as her usual cold, guarded demeanor instantly returned to shield her true thoughts.

Vincent chuckled softly, the light sound echoing smoothly in the quiet space of the room.

"There is no need to throw a tantrum, dear, because I would always do anything you want, Maria," he said calmly, his voice infuriatingly composed. "But aside from that, you need to eat well..." he paused, his gaze lingering on her face with a heavy, possessive focus. "...because tomorrow is our big day." he added.

What?

The words struck like a physical blow. It took every ounce of sheer willpower in me not to look up immediately, drop my humble disguise, and grab Vincent tightly by his collar to beat him senseless for being such a relentless pain in the ass.

But why was it so sudden?

He had always kept his timeline vague, repeatedly saying soon, or hinting at a few days down the line—so how could he possibly be informing his supposed bride just a few short hours before the actual wedding?

What had changed?

What exactly was he planning behind closed doors to accelerate everything so drastically?

"I don’t understand!" Maria said, raising her voice as her eyes widened in a sudden surge of sharp disbelief.

"Our wedding is tomorrow, Maria!" Vincent said, letting out a short, cold laugh that grated against my nerves.

He took a step closer to her and whispered something softly into her ear—a quiet remark that was hushed enough that I couldn’t grab a single word of it, no matter how hard I strained my hearing.

"Good night, pumpkin!" he said with a slight chuckle, stepping back and flashing her a confident, unbothered grin. "From tomorrow night, you won’t be able to chase me out of your bed again," he added firmly, his tone carrying an underlying promise of absolute control.

And then he turned on his heel and walked straight towards me, where I stood with my head bowed like a dutiful servant.

"You—" he paused, stopping just a step away to deliver a crisp order. "Ensure she eats properly." He added, his tone sharp and dismissive.

I clenched my fists tightly behind my back, my nails digging into my palms so hard I thought they might draw blood as I forced my body to remain perfectly still.

Without even waiting for me to respond or acknowledge his command, he turned away quickly, striding toward the doorway as though he had something deeply urgent to attend to.

He slipped out of the room, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in his wake.

But as he left, one burning question echoed repeatedly in my head—why did he suddenly want to rush it?
