Maria.
This has to be a cruel joke.
How on earth were we supposed to adjust everything and act so fast in a space of a few short hours?
The plans were already sorted out, but it would take time to implement and mark out the drafting.
The crushing realization settled over me like a heavy weight. Vincent had done this intentionally.
He was far too calculating to leave something this massive to chance; he must have suspected all along that I wanted to escape.
That had to be why he stubbornly refused to set a definite date, keeping the timeline vaguely suspended in the air until now, only to randomly proclaim tomorrow as the day without giving anyone time to breathe—let alone execute a complex breakout.
My shoulders slumped in total defeat the very moment Vincent left the room in a hurry, taking the oppressive atmosphere with him but leaving behind absolute chaos.
Seeing my composure shatter, Davian dropped his humble act immediately. He came forward with long strides and held me tightly, wrapping his arms around my trembling frame.
"Don’t panic, Maria!" he said, his tone urgent as he tried his best to calm and reassure me against the rising tide of fear. "We will still get you out of here! The plan changes, but we still carry it out." He added, his grip firm and anchoring.
He pulled me into a deep, protective embrace, and in my state of shock, I could only nod my head repeatedly against his chest, clinging to the small sliver of hope he offered.
"It’s alright!" he added softly, his hand rubbing comforting circles over my back. "Just get your mind off it for a second. We will fix this."
I rested my head firmly against his chest, listening to the rapid beat of his heart. But as the silence stretched between us, his distinct, rich scent began to wash over my senses, slowly intoxicating me. Deep inside my consciousness, Vernia stirred restlessly, her primal instincts reacting to his proximity.
It was then that I truly noticed the intense heat radiating from within Davian’s body. I tilted my head slightly to look up at him, and even in the dim light of the room, I could see how tightly he had shut his eyes, his jaw locked in a hard line.
He was definitely trying with everything in him to control himself and suppress his Alpha urges on this unyielding night, and standing this close to him, I was only making matters so much worse.
Damn it!
I immediately pulled away from him, taking a hasty step back and breaking the embrace before we ended up doing something completely out of control.
Davian’s eyes flung open immediately, a flash of wild, dark desire flickering across his irises before he forced his gaze to settle on mine.
"Is anything the matter?" he asked, his voice coming out dangerously deep and husky, rough with the effort of holding his beast at bay.
I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly bone-dry as the tension in the room thickened once more.
"There is nothing wrong, Davian!" I said, my voice trembling slightly as I tried with all my strength to calm my frayed nerves. "You need to leave right now before Vincent returns!" I added, throwing an urgent look toward the heavy wooden door.
"No, Maria," Davian said, his voice thick with raw desperation as his soft grey eyes locked onto mine with a pleading, vulnerable gaze. "Don’t chase me away tonight. Please." He added, taking a small, tentative step closer.
My heart began to race violently in my chest immediately. The air between us was growing far too thick, far too dangerous.
I really couldn’t let him stay here under any circumstances, and I knew I desperately needed to do something drastic to shatter the mood before we crossed a line we couldn’t walk back from.
"Haven’t I always just been a spy to you?" I asked, deliberately altering my face into a scowl of sharp annoyance and unfeeling coldness. "I don’t want to stay in the same room as you!" I added firmly, lacing every word with venom to push him away. "Now get out!"
Instead of backing down, Davian stepped even closer to me. Before I could retreat, he reached out and grabbed my waist firmly, pulling me toward him as his eyes darkened to a deep, primal shade.
"I’m more than contented with just cuddling you to sleep, Maria," he murmured softly, his grip unyielding yet strangely gentle against my skin. He paused, his gaze searching my face with desperate sincerity. "I ask for nothing more. Just let me stay." He added.
Breathing honestly became harder with every passing second, the intense heat radiating off his body filling the small space between us.
To make matters worse, Vernia wasn’t helping out either; my inner wolf was clawing at the surface, thoroughly intoxicated by his proximity and his Alpha aura on this fateful night.
"Help him just this once!" Vernia’s voice echoed loudly in my head, pleading with me. "Look at him—his wolf is in absolute chaos!" She added, urging me to give in to the bond and soothe his suffering.
I shoved her presence forcefully back down inside, refusing to let her take control of my actions.
No way! I knew how this went. If I allowed it even once, if I showed him the slightest bit of weakness or comfort tonight, he would only want more tomorrow. He would use every bit of this connection to try and separate Noah and me once again, tearing apart the only future I actually cared about.
I simply couldn’t allow it.
Just as I had forged a strong, unwavering resolve in my mind to push him away for good, Davian leaned down slightly and whispered directly into my ear, his hot breath brushing against my sensitive skin.
"Help me!"
A violent shiver ran down my spine instantly, shattering my composure in a single, devastating second.
