Noah.
The heavy silence in the corridor settled like lead over my chest, squeezing every last drop of air from my lungs.
The healer’s horrifying words kept playing on an endless loop in my mind, drowning out the loud, rhythmic thud of patrolling guards marching past the far end of the hallway.
’Lady Maria is currently in a coma... She needs to complete her mate bond.’
My hands shook uncontrollably as I stared at the closed wooden door of Damien’s room. Panic, cold and utterly suffocating, gripped my soul.
If Damien sank his fangs into her neck while she was helpless and unconscious, it would seal everything. The bond would be completed, and she would be bound to those four violent Alphas forever.
I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t just stand here, bleeding and battered, waiting for them to steal my bride away right under my nose.
I needed to move and I needed a plan.
I took a shaky step back, leaning heavily against the stone wall as a sharp wave of pain shot through my bruised ribs.
Fighting four Alphas head-on had been a complete disaster, and trying to burst into Damien’s room again would only get me thrown into a dungeon or killed.
The guards posted along the corridor were watching my every move like hawks, their hands resting on the hilts of their weapons.
’I need help,’ I thought, my mind racing through every option at lightning speed. ’I need someone inside this house who can actually help me get to Maria.’
Suddenly, a realization flashed through my head.
Anabel.
My eyes widened slightly as the idea took root. Anabel was the quadruplets’ younger sister, but more importantly, she was the only person in this entire cursed pack who actually cared about doing the right thing.
She was sweet, reasonable, and had always been kind to me. Whenever her brothers lost their minds or went too far with their possessive rage, Anabel was always the one who hated the violence.
And right now, Anabel was the only person who could help me navigate this disaster. She had influence with her brothers. If anyone could convince them to stop or give me access to Maria’s room without a bloody fight, it was her.
’I have to talk to Anabel,’ I told myself, grinding my teeth against the throbbing pain in my jaw. ’She needs to know what her brothers are doing. She needs to help me save Maria before it’s too late.’
"Alpha Noah!" The healer called out, jerking me out of my thoughts.
"Thank you!" I muttered out slowly. "You can leave!" I added.
I straightened up as much as my battered body would allow, taking a deep, painful breath to steady my nerves. I forced myself to walk past the two heavy guards standing outside Damien’s door, keeping my eyes fixed straight ahead.
They tracked me with cold, suspicious glares, but since I wasn’t making a move toward the door, they didn’t step forward to physically stop me.
I made my way down the winding stone staircase, sticking close to the shadows to avoid drawing unnecessary attention from the extra patrols flooding the lower halls.
The entire pack house felt like a ticking time bomb, the heavy atmosphere thick with the quadruplets’ aggressive Alpha authority. Guards were stationed at every corner, whispers echoing about the territory lockdown and the search for an unknown intruder.
I turned into the quiet, isolated wing where Anabel’s private quarters were located. My heart slammed against my chest as I approached her hallway, only to instantly freeze in my tracks.
Two massive, armored Beta guards were standing right outside her bedroom door, their arms crossed tightly over their broad chests, completely blocking the entrance.
I took a sharp breath, swallowing down the copper taste of blood still lingering in my mouth, and forced myself to step out of the shadows, walking straight up to them.
"Halt!" the guard on the left commanded, his voice deep and stern as he placed a heavy, gloved hand on the hilt of his sword. "Alpha Noah. This corridor is strictly off-limits and Lady Anabel’s room is under absolute lockdown by order of the Lord Alphas."
"I need to see her," I demanded, stepping closer, my tone laced with urgent desperation despite my weak physical state. "It’s important... Let me speak to Anabel."
The second guard shook his head firmly, his face completely devoid of sympathy. "No one enters, and no one leaves. Orders come directly from Lord Aidan and Lord Damien. Lady Anabel is resting, and she is to remain undisturbed."
"Listen to me!" I snapped, stepping right into the guard’s space, my emerald Alpha eyes flickering with dangerous frustration. "I don’t care about your orders! Maria is in a coma, and your Alphas are out of their minds! I need to speak to Anabel right now!"
"Keep your voice down, Alpha Noah!" The first guard growled back, taking a threatening step forward, his Beta pressure rising to match mine. "We have strict instructions. If you try to force your way through this door, we have permission to use physical force to remove you."
I clenched my fists so hard my knuckles turned stark white, my chest heaving with ragged breaths as I glared back and forth between the two hulking guards. Every muscle in my body begged me to strike them, to throw a punch and tear through that door, but my battered ribs reminded me instantly of my physical limits. Fighting them right here would only end with me knocked unconscious or dragged away in chains, leaving Maria entirely defenseless.
"Anabel!" I suddenly yelled at the top of my lungs, turning my head toward the heavy wooden door behind the guards. "Anabel, it’s Noah! Please, I need your help!"
"Silence!" the guard roared, grabbing my shoulder with an iron grip and shoving me backward with immense force.
I stumbled back two steps, clutching my bruised ribs as a sharp groan of pain escaped my lips. I stared at the locked bedroom door for a brief, agonizing second, hoping to hear her voice or see the handle turn from the inside, but the thick wood remained entirely motionless, sealing her away from the rest of the world.
My heart sank into a dark, hollow pit. Anabel was locked in. Her brothers had completely isolated her, trapping her in her own room just like they were trying to trap Maria.
’Dammit!’ I swore inwardly, my mind spiraling into absolute chaos as I was forced to retreat down the hall under the cold, watchful eyes of the guards.
Anabel was my best chance, but her brothers had anticipated that too. Time was running out fast, and with Maria lying unconscious and the quadruplets closing in on her, I was running completely out of options.
