Chapter 233: Chapter 233: Refusing to Let Go (3)
"I’m dying to know—if you don’t get the Jade Bracelet from me and also lose a Holy Lord, how are you going to explain things when you get back?" Seraphina Sterling smiled radiantly, completely unafraid of the dark muzzles of the guns pointed at her.
"You know my identity?" The man was stunned to hear himself called a Holy Lord. They had only met once, and it was in a mountain forest at night, from a great distance. Under those conditions, seeing him was as good as not having seen him at all. ’I can’t believe she actually remembers!’
"International mercenaries. Nightfall. It seems your first ambush was for me all along. I can’t believe I thought you were after Terrence Grant! It looks like he’s the one who got dragged into all this because of me. Why is it just you today? Where’s king? Didn’t he come?"
Seraphina Sterling remained outwardly calm, but only she knew the anxiety churning within her. ’My situation is already dangerous enough,’ she thought. ’If that master marksman, king, is here too, then I might be completely done for today!’
The room instantly fell silent. Everyone’s expression was strange, though it was unclear what they were conflicted about.
In truth, after the first ambush, king had called off the mission. He had ordered Nightfall’s Four Great Saints that none of them were to privately accept any missions related to the Jade Bracelet. It was the first time in Nightfall’s history that a job had been abandoned halfway. Lott, however, refused to accept this. He took the mission secretly, and king was completely unaware. That was the real reason for their current operation.
Seraphina Sterling glanced at their expressions. "Don’t tell me king kicked the bucket. Is that why they’re sending second-stringers like you out on a mission?"
"Shut your mouth! You don’t have the right to say king’s name!" Lott, still held by Seraphina Sterling, struggled violently.
Seraphina Sterling showed no mercy, shooting him right in the thigh. The sudden gunshot startled everyone. ’Is this girl insane?’ they thought. ’How could she just open fire like that! Isn’t she worried we’ll just eliminate her? She already knows we’re from Nightfall and that Lott is a Holy Lord, yet she still dared to shoot! Has she lost her mind?!’
"Don’t you know that captives are supposed to behave themselves and keep quiet? I’m the one who’s injured here. You have strength in numbers, while I’m all alone and helpless. The slightest sign of trouble makes me nervous! And when a person gets nervous, they’re capable of anything! It’s a perfectly natural reaction. You can’t blame me for it; you can only blame yourself for getting too agitated!"
Seraphina Sterling’s innocent expression made Lott so angry he could have coughed up blood. ’I’m the one who got shot,’ he raged internally, ’so how did it end up being my fault?!’
"Looks like king really is dead. If he were here, he wouldn’t just stand by and watch his Holy Lord get injured without making an appearance."
"I’m surprised a little slip of a girl like you cares so much about me!" A handsome man with a shock of silver hair walked in, clad in a black trench coat. "No need to worry. I’m alive and well. I’m not that easy to kill!"
The corner of Seraphina Sterling’s mouth twitched. ’Worried? Is there something wrong with his eyes? Which of them saw me looking worried? I was probing the enemy, getting a full grasp of my situation to find the most secure escape plan, okay?!’
"king!"
The other three men tensed. The moment they saw king, they quickly fell into a line, like soldiers awaiting inspection.
"king, if you get a chance, you should really teach your men a lesson. A mission is a mission, there’s no need to make such a big production out of it. A perfectly good hotel, burned down just like that!" Seraphina Sterling looked at the handsome man with the half-smile, and her thoughts began to stray. ’What’s a man like him doing as a mercenary? He should be a movie star!’
