"Why do you look like you have seen a ghost?" Leo asked.
Alric didn't respond to Leo's words because they never registered in his head. His brain had gone numb from the implication of James's presence.
Lily raised her hand from the side and threw a blob of water right into his face, drenching him from head to toe while also waking him up from his stupor.
Alric immediately started to shiver, though it wasn't clear if it was from the cold or fear.
"Snap out of it. What made you so scared? And what have you come to talk about? Speak before you are thrown out," Leo said.
"M-my family... are they dead? What about my mother? Please say you didn't kill them!" Alric muttered in panic.
Leo only got more confused by the useless rambling, but Lily understood what Alric was speaking about.
"You are asking whether I killed your father and other family members because of the way they treated my father and mother?"
Alric tried to stand upright, but slipped and fell on his back before starting to crawl backwards in fear.
"Y-yes, are they dead? Since Baron James is in here, y-you must have gone there... and k-killed them... I was late..." By the last sentence, it seemed that he was speaking to himself and had lost his mind.
Leo and Lily looked at each other and then at James.
"Brother James, I think you should do the talking. His mind isn't straight enough in front of us."
James simply shook his head after seeing the pitiful state of the so-called genius son.
He walked up, picked Alric up like any real rat by the back of his shirt, and made him sit on the wooden sofa.
Thud!
Alric cringed back in fear and writhed against the wooden handles of the sofa.
"P-please don't torture me. I promise I won't bother any of you—"
James simply took Alric's hand and handed him the letter Vritti had given him.
"Here, your father sent you a letter."
"M-my father?!" As if Alric had caught a second wind, he scrambled to open the letter and read its contents.
"Did he give me a last letter before dying?"
"He is not dead, idiot. Stop assuming stupid things and calmly read the contents."
But James's words once again didn't register in Alric's head as he kept himself busy reading the letter as if it were his last thread of life.
The more he read, the wider his eyes became. By the end, tears were streaming down his face when he realised everybody was alive.
He once again prostrated himself on the ground.
"Thank you!!! Thank you very much!!!! I will be forever indebted to God Leo and Goddess Lily!!!"
Both the subjects were taken aback by the new form of address, but as if Alric wasn't even planning to have any further talk, he kept on rambling.
"This is my best day! I cannot be thankful enough! Thank you very much, God Leo and Goddess Lily!"
"Stop—" Leo was going to stop Alric when the man himself stood up and bowed at a full 90 degrees.
"I promise I will never be an obstacle in your life ever again and will forever be grateful for the grace! And yes! I won't dare to make myself appear in front of you both until there's no choice left!"
Alric said it himself, then turned around and ran off through the territory, singing happy praises of Leo and Lily like some mad person.
"Hahahah! Hahahaha!"
"Hahahahaha!"
Alric didn't even realise he was wet and might freeze in the cold the moment he left the territory, but he didn't care and ran like a wild dog across the snow-capped landscape, not even bothering to summon his wolf due to how happy he was feeling. The letter in his hand was raised high so that it remained visible throughout the distance he travelled until he disappeared into the snow.
"What the fuck...?" Leo muttered, completely dumbfounded.
And it wasn't only him. Whoever had seen Alric had a similar reaction.
"This is the genius son?" James muttered and turned towards Leo and Lily.
"What did you both do to him?"
"Nothing?" Leo said and turned towards Lily, who had a similar expression, as if thinking her simple beating through Lunaria was really this effective.
"And what the hell is this God and Goddess? What does he think of us?" Leo asked.
But then, Naelith, standing at the side, spoke up.
"My Lord, this man isn't the only person I have seen using the word God to address you. On our multiple trips to Aurelius Hall, we have seen many freshmen say that, and even some sophomores (2nd term) and juniors (3rd term) use the same. And not just you and Lady Lily, but the other top 50 freshmen too."
"Really?"
Naelith nodded in affirmation.
Since there was no answer as to why, and the topic itself was embarrassing for Leo and Lily, they didn't talk about it further.
With that done, Leo went back to supervising the hot spring construction to fix minor details while others got busy with their own training.
Lily approached Leo.
"Leo, let's go to Professor Katherine."
"Why?" Leo asked.
"I want to be able to summon Niri like you can summon Pryde and play with her. She is too cute to be left alone in your spiritual space."
"But she is tending to natural treasures, you know?"
"Hmph! You and your ruthless labour. She is a kid! Let her play a bit."
"She does!"
"But not with me!"
"She's extra mischievous with you! You will spoil her and make her lazy!"
"So wha—"
Ting!
Both of them received a notification at the same time.
>The meeting time had been set to select the 5 preferred spots personally by the top 10 students.
>26 April 500 AA, 14:00, at Storm Hall.
>Supervisor: Professor Brant
Both simultaneously looked at the current time.
26 April, 9:21
"We have a little more than 4 hours. Let's talk things later." Before turning away, he gave a last look at Lily.
"Don't worry, I was just playing around. We will approach Professor Katherine soon."
Lily's face blossomed into a jovial smile.
"And to be honest, you should accompany Ashira as well. But I don't know if it's possible without the bloodbond stage..."
Leo looked at the beasts that were still in the chainbond stage.
Flame Wyvern [Ashira] (Peak 2-star) - Chain Bond 99%
Frostwhisk Mouse [Zelut Whisk] (Peak 2-star) - Chain Bond 99%
Kobolt [Kazz] (Peak 1-star) - Chain Bond 57%
"Oh... they need my blood now," Leo realised. But he also noticed a glaring issue.
"Why the hell hasn't Zelut ranked up yet, even after so long?" he muttered.
With how many beast cores, meat, and occasional treasures the mouse had eaten, he should have already ranked up. But Zelut hadn't.
