Chapter 40: 40.The common face of misery-2

Braden and Aldoff aren’t close at all.

Braden would never have gone running to his older brother over a minor dispute like that.

A darker thought struck him, making his blood run cold.

And those thugs who tried to kidnap Reina ... Were they really taking orders from a hot-headed idiot like Braden?

Or were they working for Aldoff all along?

I can’t dismis that possibility either. But it wasn’t such serious issue for him to personally send men.

His spiraling thoughts came to a sharp halt as he reached his seat.

Reina was sitting there, talking shyly with Brandy, a soft, timid smile on her face.

Seeing her safe and unharmed brought an immediate wave of relief over Mylo, calming the violent storm in his chest.

"What happened to you, bro?" Mac asked, leaning over the back of his chair and squinting at him. ’’What were you even saying to Aldoff Vance?"

Mylo just shrugged casually, masking the cold sweat on his back.

"Nothing much. Just apologizing for leaving midway through his speech. Didn’t want to leave a bad impression on the student rep on my first day."

"Right..." Mac rolled his eyes, clearly finding the excuse overly formal, before perking up.

"Anyway, what are you guys doing now?"

Mac stood up, stretching his arms, and signaled toward the hallway.

"I was thinking of heading down to the gym to check out the basketball team. Might try out. You wanna come, Mylo?"

"Well, sports aren’t really my-"

Before Mylo could even finish his sentence, Brandy interjected.

"I’m borrowing Reina, okay, Mylo?" Brandy announced, throwing an arm over Reina’s shoulder.

Mylo blinked, his body language shifting into visible confusion.

"And why are you asking me? If she wants to go with you, she doesn’t need anyone else’s permission." He looked over at Reina.

"See? I’ve got no problem with it. Let’s go," Brandy said, turning to Reina with a smirk.

"O-Okay..." Reina replied timidly, quickly clutching her bag to her chest.

So she has already formed a friend huh.

"By the way, after you guys are finished, make sure to call me, alright, Reina?"

Mylo added, wanting to make sure he could meet up with her after classes ended.

Reina started to nod, but suddenly stopped midway, her cheeks flushing slightly.

"Uh... we haven’t exchanged numbers yet."

Mylo froze for a second, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Oh. Right... I completely forgot about that."

He pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and handed it over.

"Here, type your number in."

As soon as Reina finished typing and handed the phone back, Brandy snatched it out of Mylo’s hand and began tapping away on the screen herself.

"Don’t message me unless you actually have a real reason, got it?" Brandy huffed, tossing the phone back into Mylo’s hands.

"Hey! Hey! What about me? Put me in too!"

Mac jumped in, waving his phone around after realizing he’d been completely left out.

"Not a chance in hell am I giving my number to a creep like you," Brandy snapped, looking thoroughly repulsed.

She grabbed Reina’s wrist and pulled her along toward the exit.

"Come on, Reina. You shouldn’t give him your number either, you need to stay as far away from bastards like him as possible."

"Hey! Come on, you can’t do this to me! Listen!" Mac pleaded.

He gave Mylo a quick, urgent tap on the chest before sprinting off after the two girls.

"I’m gonna get her number no matter what! Let’s meet up after college, Mylo!"

Mylo stood alone in the thinning crowd, staring down at his phone in mild disbelief.

...You didn’t even take my number, Mac.

Mylo sighed, slinging his bag over his shoulder before stepping out into the empty corridor.

As he walked down the hallway, he quickly spotted Chloe Vane a short distance away, checking her phone.

Adjusting his grip on his bag strap, Mylo made a sharp turn and headed directly toward her.

"Miss Chloe."

"Oh, Mylo. Finished with your business?"

She faced him with a warm smile, putting away her phone.

"Yes. Sorry for my earlier behavior."

"No need for that. What did you wanted to talk to me about?’’

She asked, crossing her arms and moving straight to the point.

"Can’t I just check up on you without any particular business?" Mylo replied smoothly.

"Of course. But do remember that we are student and teacher."

Miss Chloe teased with a wink as she started striding down the corridor.

Mylo fell into step alongside her.

"Hmm? I don’t consider you just a teacher anymore, Miss Chloe."

"Eh...? W-what do you mean by that, Mylo?"

Startled, Chloe asked, but Mylo just laughed softly.

"I mean, well... I’ve started to consider you more as an anchor of mine.

’’Whenever I get stuck, your advice makes me move forward. That’s the kind of role I’ve begun seeing you in."

His response erased her embarrassment, but sprouted new doubts in its place.

’I only talked to him yesterday. How can that make him think of me as a mentor?’

For her, it had been a special, yet short encounter. She hadn’t thought of their relationship as anything beyond mere acquaintances.

But that was just her perspective.

The emotional support she had provided him in that short amount of time carried far greater value to him.

It was a lifeline holding the weight of all his struggles.

’Haah... Me? An anchor? I can’t even protect myself... There’s no real support I can offer you...’

Her hands came together, clutching tightly as unwanted thoughts began to flood her mind.

Mylo, not noticing her sudden distress, simply continued walking at her pace, enjoying the quiet between them.

It brought a rare peace to his mind, calming the noise and giving him a chance to fully compose himself.

"By the way, Miss Chloe... could you please give me your contact number?"

"Oh, of course," she replied. "Also, if you need any security contacts, you can access them directly on the college forums."

It was normal for teachers to share their information with students, though since Miss Chloe wasn’t actually teaching Mylo’s classes, she normally wouldn’t have handed it over so freely.

After exchanging numbers, Mylo bid her farewell with a warm smile.

Miss Chloe stood still, watching him walk away and leave her behind.

She couldn’t show Mylo her weak side.

Not to someone who saw her as an anchor.

She needed to meet those expectations.

She knew deep down that this was just an excuse to keep herself grounded, but without it, she wouldn’t be able to stand tall and meet Mylo’s eyes.

Nodding to herself, she turned and walked back toward her office.

On the other hand, Mylo had already begun planning his next steps as he moved through the campus.

But just as he walked past a major corridor intersection, a sharp voice called out to him.

"Hey, you, Stop right there."

Deghthral Hearth appeared from around the corner, his face twisted in annoyance.
