Chapter 41: 41.The common face of misery-3

"Yeah, Professor Hearth?"

There shouldn’t have been anything to talk about between them, and the confusion was clear on Mylo’s face.

"Hey, you... uh, what was your name again?" Professor Hearth asked.

"Mylo," he replied. "Mylo Zane."

"Oh, yeah, Mylo. So, I was, uh... I was just, you know, walking by over there, and I saw you talking with, uh... Chloe. You know, I’m also, you know, uh... so I was just asking, what was all that about?"

Was he watching us the whole time?

Whether Mylo and Miss Chloe talked or not was none of Professor Hearth’s business, yet he had actually stepped forward to confront him about it.

Still, Mylo couldn’t just question a faculty member to his face, he was a senior professor, after all.

"I was just asking her about some campus rules. She really helped clarify a few things for me."

"Oh! Oh, I see, I see. Well, of course she helped you, you know? She’s a very... talented teacher," Professor Hearth said, his demeanor shifting instantly.

He stepped closer and placed a heavy, overly familiar hand on Mylo’s shoulder, steering him along the corridor while lowering his voice to a half-whisper.

"But you know, I’m the Head of the Discipline Committee. So if you ever need to ask anything in the future, or if you need any type of help-any type of help-you can always come directly to me, okay?

’’There won’t be any need to go bothering Chloe. After all, I’m the one who always stands with the students, right?"

’’I... understand.’’

Even as he gave that basic response, Mylo couldn’t help but feel weirdly lost regarding Professor Hearth’s true intentions.

Was the man simply jealous that Mylo had gone to the deputy instead of the head of the committee to ask his doubts?

Or was there another reason behind this sudden, lingering confrontation?

Just then, something clicked sharply in Mylo’s mind.

In his previous life, Miss Chloe was rumored to have had an affair with another faculty member, a scandal that ultimately forced her to leave the college.

Mylo’s eyes narrowed imperceptibly.

Deghthral Hearth and Chloe Vane were both key members of the Disciplinary Committee, one serving as the Head, the other as the Deputy. Out of everyone on campus, they had far more opportunities to interact and form a relationship than anyone else.

As the realization set in, an empty, hollow feeling began to settle deep in Mylo’s gut.

Although he was familiar with that sensation, he certainly wasn’t used to it.

Gently slipping away from the professor’s hand on his shoulder, Mylo turned to face him, a wide smile spreading across his face, one that reached all the way to his ears.

"I understand, Professor," Mylo said, keeping his tone light and playful.

"But... I just can’t help going to Miss Chloe. She’s honestly the kindest person I’ve met in this entire college.’’

’’W-what?’’

’’Truth be told, I can already picture myself making up all sorts of small, mundane excuses just to go talk to her."

"A-no... what are you talking about?" Professor Hearth cut in mid-sentence, his brow furrowing as a flicker of irritation broke through his facade.

Mylo, completely ignoring the shift in the professor’s expression, continued as if sharing a lighthearted secret.

"I’ve actually already exchanged contact details with her, too."

"You know that she is your teacher, right?!"

Professor Hearth snapped, his tone darkening slightly as his grip on his own composure loosened.

"Of course," Mylo replied with a bright, innocent smile. "She’s my favorite teacher. I can’t wait to chat with her tonight!"

Before Professor Hearth could process the bold declaration, Mylo tapped his own temple, as if suddenly remembering something urgent.

"Ah, I just remembered! I have to catch up with my friends! Don’t worry, Professor, I’ll make sure to come to you if I ever need help with disciplinary rules."

With a polite nod, Mylo turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Professor Hearth standing frozen in the corridor, his face bamboozled by their exchange.

On the other hand, as soon as Mylo was out of sight, He brought his hand up to facepalm.

Ah... Why on earth did I just do that?

There was still no concrete proof that anything was actually going on between Professor Hearth and Miss Chloe. Even if they were involved in any kind of relationship, there was no way to know whether it was mutual or one-sided.

In hindsight, what he had just done was completely reckless, unwanted, and entirely unaccounted for in any of his future plans.

But that strange, hollow sensation beneath his chest had driven him to act.The mere thought of anyone taking Miss Chloe away, or worse, dragging her into another ruinous scandal, made him deeply uncomfortable. He couldn’t bear the nagging sense of jealousy that flared up inside him.

But... there’s no reason for him to get jealous in the first place, he reasoned with himself, taking a deep breath to steady his thoughts.

Shaking his head to clear the clutter, he reminded himself of his boundaries: he was here to support her, not to intrude. He wouldn’t get in the way of her personal life.

The warm, golden rays of the sun illuminated the interior of the empty classroom. Outside, the day was still far from over, and the campus grounds remained as lively as ever.

Aldoff pulled his gaze away from the window, turning toward the doorway with a subtle smile.

"You took a long time to get here, Braden."

The dusty classroom was draped in heavy shadows, with Aldoff’s lying far enough that his head seemed almost beneath Braden’s boots.

"What do you want from me?" Braden snapped, his voice cold. "Haven’t I told you not to call me while we’re on campus?"

"You sure did," Aldof replied softly. "It was painful... but what happened today was far more painful for me. How could you make such a mistake, little brother?"

"Ha?’’ Braden tilted his chin up in utter indifference, his arrogance fueled in no small part by Aldoff’s unreadable, blank expression.

"Trying to bully freshers and almost assaulting them right in front of the main hall, surrounded by other students... Do you even understand the severity of your actions?"

Aldoff Vance didn’t move an inch as he carefully observed the shifting expressions on his brother’s face.

"Who...’’ Braden, voice filled with irritation and anger, asked, ’’Who told you that?’’
