Chapter 42.The common face of misery-4Chapter 42: 42.The common face of misery-4
"Of course, that would be your first reaction," Aldoff Vance murmured. "That impulsive streak of yours has caused nothing but trouble for our family."
With a weary sigh, Aldoff walked over to a row of desks and leaned his back against one for support.
"So, here’s what actually happened. Imagine this," he began, his voice taking on an animated, theatrical cadence as his hands moved through the air to illustrate the scene.
"I, the student representative, the one who carries the weight and honor of the Vance family, am standing in the main hall surrounded by freshers,’’ his voice getting rhythmic, Aldoff explained like a storyteller.
’’Suddenly, a boy walks up to me. He tells me, right then and there, that my own brother tried to harass him and his friend. What do you think that does to my image? What kind of damage do you think that inflicts on our standing?"
Aldoff paused, resting a cold, judging gaze on his younger brother.
"Come on, just think about it. I doubt that tiny brain of yours can fully grasp it, but try. Really think about it."
"You’re trying to make way too much out of this. Something like that doesn’t even matter," Braden countered, his tone laced with a mocking smirk.
"We deal with bastards like those on a weekly basis, it’s-"
"No, no, no, no," Aldoff cut him off mid-sentence, waving his hand dismissively.
"We don’t. We don’t deal with any of that. In my entire life, this is the very first time I’ve ever had to deal with something so embarassing."
"Then go ahead and deal with it yourself instead of crying in front of me!" Braden spat back, his defense instantly turning into aggressive defiance.
"Just like how you tried to deal with that girl, Reina," Aldoff added, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"Ha... Who?" Braden felt completely lost at the sudden name drop.
"Are you really going to pretend you don’t know?" Aldoff scoffed, stepping closer. "You used our father’s name to send goons to get Reina, the girl who was involved, right from her hostel."
With each passing word, Braden grew more confused and lost.
’’I did no such thing. If I want to deal with someone, I would do it my-’’
’’I don’t need any more of your pathetic excuses.’’
Aldoff’s loud but clear commanding tone, made Braden step back.
’’I’m cutting you from chain of command.’’
’’W-what...?’’ The line drew the most out of Braden, his blood boiling in fury.
With it came a widening of eyes in an understanding. He was completely lost in conservation so far, until, the prior statement from Aldoff.
’’Are you joking with me right now?! This all...! All of this is clearly your sey-’’
’’I have already confirmed with father.’’ Aldoff interrupt, with no intention of listening further, he continued, ’’If you have any problem then you can talk with him.’’
Although eyes still focused on Aldoff’s figure, Braden’s eyes refused to meet Aldoff’s.
’’Braden, you have always been an embarrassment for our family. And now that is turning in danger for our business.’’
Aldoff turned his back on Braden. There was a clear difference in their size. If Braden jumped him, Aldoff would clearly have no way of escaping.
’’From now on, you are a domestic dog, you are to eat the crumbs thrown, and follow the commands from family. Well, I doubt we will ever have any job for a mentally disabled dog.’’
Silence spread in the room as the two brothers inside reached the end of their exchange.
There was nothing more to say. Braden understood the events clearly.
He had been framed and thrown out of chain of commands, the authority to use to issue orders and use the massive influence of their family throughout the city, by his own brother.
His eyes lingered on Aldoff, as if waiting for reply that could change things.
’’You still standing here?’’ Aldoff glanced at him over his shoulder, ’’Do want me to put a leash over you?’’
With a loud bang, the doors were smashed as Braden stormed out.
Aldoff, left alone, spread his arms a little, hummed his way across room while following a happy melody.
Taking out his phone, he dialled to someone.
’’There’s no need to go after Reina or Mylo for now. I have achieved what I wanted. If necessary, I would deal with him later.’’
After giving his command, he continued to spin in a happy mood.

A man exited the college premises by jumping off the railings.
Clad in jeans and a hoodie, his face was covered by a wrapped bandana.
Mylo made his way around the corner before heading up the alley into the deep heart of the city.
He had already thought through his next steps.
He couldn’t deal with Braden or Aldoff directly. Their power and influence spread far beyond his reach.
The one advantage he had was his experience as a drug distributor from his previous life.
Forced by Aldoff, he had worked to supply drugs to colleges using the vast network spread throughout the city. He had more than enough knowledge to bring down the drug syndicate itself!
But none of that is gonna be easy. I need to be patient and work step-by-step.
Increasing my power, making sure my friend is safe, and working on exposing the drug syndicate, these things need to happen slowly and simultaneously.
For now, he had decided to find out the current state of the drug business. He needed to make sure that things were in accordance with his memory.
I also need to find out more things. I need to be aware that the life I lived and the world I saw are a lot smaller than actual reality.
I will have to expand my information network, so when the time comes, I can get back at every single one of my enemies.
He had already dropped any other thoughts and fully accepted reality: if he doesn’t take down his enemies, they will bring him harm.
His path was now set, and he had accepted it with full conviction.
But that wasn’t enough.
As he lay forced against the wall, with the man pushing a gun into his mouth, the bleeding Mylo could only think back to his conviction.
