Chapter 6: 6.Hearts that share fears-3

Miss Chloe didn’t speak right away.

’What can I offer this boy? Which words will be suitable for his frail heart?’

Miss Chloe wondered to herself. She had worked on many students, but something of this degree was first for her.

’Wait?! ...weak heart?’

She looked at the boy with her eyes as though something brilliant had popped up in her head.

She let the silence stretch, giving Mylo’s ragged breathing time to even out, giving his ugly crying time to fully die down into a few last hiccuping breaths.

Only when his hands stopped trembling in hers did she finally open her mouth.

"You looked pathetic out there." Her voice was gentle, but the words themselves were not what Mylo would have wanted to hear.

Mylo’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with a mix of hurt and confusion.

Did she...did she really just say that?

"Your shoulders were caved in.

’’Your legs were shaking badly.

’’Your face had a very pathetic expression ’’

She said it plainly, without malice, as if she was just describing weather.

Mylo opened his mouth to protest.

Nothing came out.

Just like before.

I know. I know I looked pathetic. I don’t need you to remind me.

"But." Miss Chloe’s thumb brushed over his knuckles.

"The boy sitting in front of me right now is also scared. Also pathetic, in his own way."

That didn’t feel like comfort.

"However." A small, gentle, happy smile.

"He is far braver than the one outside those gates."

Come again? That was what his expression conveyed.

"I don’t think I could do what you just did," she admitted.

Something distant clouded her eyes for a moment before disappearing in the depths.

"Sitting in front of a stranger... admitting you’re afraid. Cry without any shame over it. I don’t know if I have that kind of courage."

That’s... that’s such a low bar. All I did was cry like a broken kid.

Sensing his feelings, she followed ’’Of course anyone could have cried under pressure or just cause they were afraid to talk to someone else.

’’But you are different, Mylo. You know exactly how your fears work and despite being aware of the pain it may bring you, you still decided to share your fear with me.

’’So thank you Mylo, thank you for trusting me,’’ her words were just met with blank expressions.

"Fear doesn’t disappear just because you want it to. It remains inside us, occupying a place in our heart." Miss Chloe said, reading the confusion on his face.

"You can’t just have no fear. Fear is important for our own survival, it keeps us in check and stops us from making any decisions that might ruin our life.

’’But...it also gives us pain. The pain that eats away at us everyday. No matter how much we try, we can’t just get rid of it.

’’But there are ways to fight it. One of the best ways is to meet it with more fear," her smile became a little more radiant.

"...I don’t follow."

"Let me ask you something instead." She leaned forward, her gaze steady, patient.

"Between these two versions of yourself,

’’the one who does nothing, who lets everything happen without any action and just try to run away in the hopes of escaping everything,

’’and the one who tried his best, gave his all and was honest to himself, even if he ended up in pretty bad state,

’’Which one frightens you more?"

Mylo’s heart, continuously playing a violent melody for the better part of an hour, suddenly settled into something calm, as if it was submerged in cold water.

Two scenes played in his mind, side by side.

One was a boy curled up on a rooftop, hollowed out, waiting for the years to grind him into dust exactly as they had before.

The other was a boy standing back up, shaking, terrified, failing over and over, but standing nonetheless.

He let out a short laugh, more air than sound.

"That’s not even a real question," he said.

He didn’t need to think about it. It was the easiest choice of his miserable existence.

Was it really this easy? I suddenly feel like my mind now is way cleaner than ever.

It’s not about just choosing the best way and doing things.

Or just get completely involved, hoping to be happy and waiting in fear of inevitable.

It’s about changing it with your own efforts and finding satisfaction in the fact that you gave your all and didn’t surrender to your fears.

Beating the fear of failure by fear of not even trying.

As I thought, talking to Miss Chloe was the right decision.

Looking at his face, Miss Chole noticed a particular gaze, filled with clarity and conviction.

Her own smile turned satisfactory. ’’Looks like you have cleared up your mind. Do you need any more of my help?’’

Looking at her, Mylo felt something deep within his heart.

’’I think I get the gist of what you were trying to convey. I’m very grateful to you miss Chloe. How can I repay your kindness?’’ although he asked this question, in his mind he had already arrived at an answer.

’’I just did what as a teacher and as an adult I should do. There’s no need for you to do anything.

’’Hmm... if possible just don’t hesitate to come to me if you have any problems,’’ her brilliant smile was as white and just as happy.

’’That’s just doing me a favour. But yeah...I would surely need your help in the future. If that time comes, then please help me again too,’’ his sincere words made their way to miss Chloe.

’’Yes, you have got this side covered!’’ She was happy.

’’Then miss Chloe, I would like to ask you a question. Is there anything...you are afraid of? Something you would want to overcome too?’’ A very random question was asked.

Her whole body went still.
