Chapter 75: 75.Feelings That Need Rediscovery-9

He stopped mid-sentence and forcefully leaned his back straight against the cold stone, finally escaping her intense gaze.

"Tritia... I am a good person when I deal with someone for first time. Or at least, I try to consider myself one."

"Hmm."

"In that cave... if there had been someone else in your place who behaved in a similar manner, I would have acted the exact same way I did with you.’’

’’What I’m trying to say is... initially, it wouldn’t have mattered if it was specifically you or someone else."

"Hmm! For some reason, I really don’t like hearing that," Tritia pouted, her ears twitching. "Tell me more."

"I’m sure you don’t," Mylo let out a soft, dry laugh. "Look, I did care about you, and I genuinely wanted to protect you."

A faint, radiant smile instantly began to bloom across Tritia’s face, only to vanish a millisecond later as Mylo continued.

"But that’s just because I try to be a good person. At least, that’s how I act toward others. I can think of many other people I’ve met where I’d do the exact same thing, trying my absolute best to protect them."

"You just keep playing with my frail heart, don’t you?!" Tritia grumbled, crossing her arms tightly. "Are you finished?!"

"Haha, just a few more words."

"Hmmph."

"You would have simply remained a person I happened to care about, someone who helped me toward my goal. But that changed. Everything changed the moment you came back for me."

"Hmm?"

"I know better than anyone how much courage that takes," Mylo whispered, his tone turning serious as his gaze softened. "Both physical and emotional. I’ve gone through phases in my life where I froze... where I couldn’t take action. But you did. And that’s why... you aren’t just ’another person’ to me anymore."

"Hmm! Then what am I? Tell me!"

Tritia leaned eagerly toward him, practically holding her breath as she hung onto his every word.

"In such a short amount of time... somewhere along the line, you became my anchor," Mylo admitted softly, looking straight into her scarlet eyes. "If I had to assign a role to what you are to me... I’d say you’re my partner, for now."

"Hmm?! Partners? Is that... is that something like warrior comrades?! Tell me!"

Mylo blinked, a quiet chuckle escaping him.

"Yeah. Something just like that, maybe. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Warrior comrades."

In the pitch-black gloom of the cave overhang, Tritia’s scarlet eyes seemed to burst with a brilliant, sparkling light.

Mylo couldn’t help the warm smile that tugged at the corners of his lips. Reaching out, his hand instinctively brushed through her messy, tangled hair, gently pulling the stray strands away from her face.

"Hmm!" Tritia beamed, leaning into his touch with absolute pride.

"It’s set then! From now on, we are warrior comrades!"

"We will fight together and face every challenge head-on! We will take care of each other and lay down our lives for one another!"

"H-Hey, slow down a little bit, okay?" Mylo put his hands up, chuckling nervously. "Slow down. There’s really no need for us to go around wagering our lives."

Tritia, who had practically started bouncing on her heels with excitement, slowly settled back down. She puffed out her cheeks before focusing her bright eyes back on him.

"Hmm. So... when are we going back to hunt?"

"Going back..." Mylo sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I honestly wonder if that’s even a good idea. I don’t even want to begin counting how many times I nearly embraced death today."

"Hmm! But don’t you have to complete your goal?" Tritia pressed, taking a step closer. "Besides, that was before. Now I have ascended! I might not have formed any new spells yet, but my physical power is already multiple folds higher!"

She paused, her ears perking up as a sudden realization hit her.

"Hey! Now that I remember... you felt a lot stronger back there, too. Have you also ascended? Tell me!"

"No, I haven’t," Mylo shook his head. "I just completed my Tkern hunting goal. That’s why I got a strength increase."

"Hmm! Your way is so different. Then what are we waiting for?!" Tritia raised her fists. "Let’s go and get them all!"

"Ha ha... if only it were that easy," Mylo muttered with a dry laugh.

"Hmm? How many more do we have to hunt? Tell me."

Mylo opened his mental system interface, reviewing his remaining quest requirements line by line.

"Well... we have 19 Nothroughts to go, four Bearashes... and after that, the Bare Bone, which we have absolutely no idea how strong it is. Oh, and there’s still one Vexfang remaining for me."

"Hmm! I think we can do that," Tritia said confidently. "We will hunt them down just like we did earlier."

"No, no-definitely not like earlier."

"Hmm? Why not? Tell me!"

"Fighting Nothroughts head-on is just a massive waste of energy and time," Mylo explained, leaning back against the stone wall.

"If we can locate a cluster of them, a whole group, and trigger an attack, they’ll go berserk and start attacking each other just like you saw before. Once they tear each other apart, I just have to wait for the right moment and pick off the heavily injured ones. That way, I can complete the goal easily."

"Hmm! I didn’t know they would attack their own kind."

"Haha, yeah. The Lunatic Pariah actually tried to herd them to extract their milk, but the second he attempted to domesticate them, they went completely frantic, turned on each other, and fought to the death."

"All right then! Hmm! Let’s go!" Tritia grinned, flexing her small hands. "I can’t wait to rip through their hides!"

She extended her claws right in front of Mylo’s face. He squinted slightly, his eyes catching the deep, crimson shade staining her nails. They were far redder than he remembered.

Is that because of her Ascension? Mylo wondered, watching the bloody hue of her claws closely. They’ve completely changed color...

Just as the thought crossed his mind, Tritia retracted her claws back into her fingers.

"Wow," Mylo blinked. "You can alter their length at will now?"

"Hmm! Yeah!" Tritia beamed proudly. "Everyone in my tribe can do it once they achieve an Ascension! Here, look!"

Her nails seamlessly slid back into her skin, looking completely normal.

Then, with a quiet flex of her fingers, they shot out again, extending nearly to the full length of her fingers.

The deep red shade didn’t emit a magical glow; it was simply a permanent, crimson stain embedded in her nails.

"Aren’t I awesome?! Tell me!"

"Yeah... you are amazing," Mylo gave a short, dry laugh, his gaze shifting down to his own meager arsenal.

He had his heavily chipped, battered machete resting at his hip, alongside a single Tkern antler he had managed to salvage.

Smiling faintly to himself, he gathered his resolve and offered a silent prayer to Satan in the dark cavern.

Let’s make this final push... and this time, let’s be more careful than ever.

He looked down at Tritia’s tiny, hyperactive frame as she kept flexing her crimson claws in the dim light.

Maybe it was because of their talk just now, but a strange, quiet urge settled deep in his chest, a sudden desire to keep this small, fiercely loyal creature by his side, to shield her from the brutal world outside. Something soft, like a faint, echoing melody, hummed in his heart.
