Chapter 57: Chapter 55: Hatch
Following Su Yuqing’s instructions, Feng Ling put on the earpiece and lapel-clip walkie-talkie required for the operation. She then borrowed a car from the Inspection Bureau and drove to a large nearby supermarket.
The supermarket was sure to be closed at this hour, but she couldn’t think of a better plan. She was prepared to pry open the door and break in, leaving Su Yuqing to clean up the aftermath.
Her current worry wasn’t how to pry the door open, but whether the meat in the supermarket’s walk-in freezer would be fresh enough.
One of the conditions for hatching was fresh flesh and blood.
’But this is my first time being a "mom." How am I supposed to know what counts as fresh? Is six hours after death okay? What about twelve? Or does "fresh" just mean not rotten?’
’No...’
Halfway there, Feng Ling suddenly slammed on the brakes, unable to stop herself from clutching her head.
"Am I going crazy from the Pollution Value? All the meat in the supermarket is processed—there’s almost no blood... Aaargh!!!"
Feng Ling let out a frustrated scream.
’Do I have to go to a slaughterhouse?’
’But the slaughterhouse is really far from the city. A round trip would take until dawn. If I’d known, I should have just used that corpse from the ship!’
’It was disgusting, sure, but at least it would have lightened my burden immediately!’
’Damn it. It’s too late.’
During the two hours she had been resting, the Cleaner Fish had already been on-site and cleaned up all the blood and remains.
’Argh! I’m so pissed!!!’
Feng Ling grabbed her head and slammed it against the steering wheel! THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP...
From the passenger seat, Huangfu Miaomiao gripped her seatbelt, not daring to make a sound. She had already secretly sprayed her perfume several times. If it still didn’t work, she didn’t know what else to do.
Feng Ling was in a frenzy. She started considering taking the Nest straight to the hotel, but what little reason she had left told her that would be too dangerous.
The number of Alien Species in the hotel was unknown, as were their abilities. She had to be in peak condition—at the very least, she couldn’t afford to need a full two hours to recover from a fatal blow!
’A Nest is nearly impossible to kill, but not absolutely impossible!’
’So I have to mobilize every bit of energy in my body! All of it!!!’
’Damn it! I thought my advanced ability would be a huge help, so why is it failing me at a critical time like this?!’
Suddenly, she heard a cat meow.
Feng Ling paused, looking out the car window.
A skinny orange cat was meowing at the car from the side of the road. With its tail held high, it walked over and rubbed against the tire.
It was obviously a stray.
’A stray cat that no one cares about. Even if it died, no one would notice, and it wouldn’t be breaking any laws.’
Feng Ling opened the door and got out. The cat immediately drew near, meowing and rubbing against her pant leg.
’That’s really rare. Every other stray I’ve ever encountered has run away the second they saw me.’
Seeing Feng Ling get out, Huangfu Miaomiao quickly followed. When she saw the orange cat, she pulled a sausage stick from her bag, tore open the wrapper, and offered it to the cat.
The orange cat caught the scent, let out a little meow, and ran over. It crouched by Huangfu Miaomiao’s feet and began to eat.
’These strays usually don’t approach people on their own. They only deign to get close and cozy when they need help.’
Feng Ling watched with a cold expression. After a moment, she asked Huangfu Miaomiao, "Where’d you get the sausage stick?"
"Oh, I have plenty more in my bag." Huangfu Miaomiao retrieved a heavy backpack from her storage space. It was filled not only with sausage sticks, but also cookies, chips, milk, self-heating hot pots, and all kinds of other food.
"Weren’t we planning to go into the Maze? I didn’t know if there would be anything to eat inside, so I packed a lot..." Huangfu Miaomiao glanced nervously at Feng Ling. "Do you want some? I was going to ask you in the car, but you seemed like you were in a bad mood..."
Feng Ling was, in fact, in a very bad mood.
Not a single thing had gone right for her today.
"Are you done feeding it? Hurry up so we can go," she said, her face devoid of expression.
’The thought of killing the cat flashed through her mind, then vanished.’
’It wasn’t out of kindness. Harming the weak just filled her with an intense self-loathing.’
’She only enjoyed challenging the strong.’
’Killing a cat? That would be pathetic.’
"Huh? You’re not eating anymore?" Huangfu Miaomiao moved the sausage stick closer to the stray’s mouth, but the cat backed away a few steps and continued to meow at her.
"That’s weird. Why did it stop eating..." Huangfu Miaomiao hesitated. "Maybe I should just leave the sausage stick here?"
Feng Ling raised an eyebrow. "It wants you to follow it."
"Huh?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked, stunned. "Why would it do that?"
Feng Ling grew even more irritated. "How should I know? Go follow it if you want to find out."
Huangfu Miaomiao was curious, but she hesitated and didn’t move. "Didn’t you say you needed to find a place for... food? We should really..."
The orange cat’s meows grew louder.
"MEOW!~ MEEOW!~~ MEOW MEOW!~~"
’The irritation was piling up. Now Feng Ling really felt like killing the cat!’
"Make it shut up!!!"
Huangfu Miaomiao flinched and quickly took a couple of steps toward the orange cat.
The cat clearly had a goal in mind. The moment it saw Huangfu Miaomiao approach, it immediately ran a short distance away and resumed meowing at them.
Alternating between walking and waiting, the stray led them into a trash-strewn alley. Inside a broken cardboard box, they discovered four tiny kittens.
It dawned on Huangfu Miaomiao. "It wants us to take care of its babies."
The mother cat grasped her kittens by the scruff of their necks, carrying them one by one to Huangfu Miaomiao’s feet. She nudged their frail little bodies with her head, meowing at them frantically.
"What should we do...?" Huangfu Miaomiao looked to Feng Ling, distressed.
Frowning, Feng Ling crouched down. She reached out and picked up one of the kittens to examine it.
’It’s tiny, maybe only a month old. Its eyes are matted with filth, and its ears are covered in scabby patches.’
"This one’s dying." She set down the kitten and nudged the other three. "This one’s dying, too. And this one and this one... are already dead."
"Meeeow~" the orange cat cried at her again.
Feng Ling thought for a moment, then gathered the four kittens into the folds of her clothes. She said to the mother cat, "I’ll take them to a Doctor. If they can be saved, I’ll find them a good home. As for the two dead ones... let’s just say they’re a gift from you."
The mother cat simply sat and watched her.
Feng Ling didn’t expect a cat to understand human speech anyway. Cradling the kittens, she turned and walked away.
Huangfu Miaomiao hurried to keep up, unable to resist a glance back at the mother cat. She saw that the cat wasn’t following them. Instead, its head was bowed as it began to feast on the sausage stick she had left behind.
Huangfu Miaomiao tore her gaze away and hurried after Feng Ling. "Where are we going to find a Doctor?"
Without a word, Feng Ling strode purposefully forward. When she reached the car, she opened the back door, placed the four kittens on the seat, and then gave her left hand a light flick—
A silver ring appeared with a WHOOSH, transformed into two Cards, and began to float in orbit around her.
She picked up the two dead kittens from the car seat and, without a moment’s hesitation, threw them toward the Cards.
"Hatch!"
In an instant, the kittens’ bodies, wrapped in a silver light, landed on the grassy roadside.
Their bodies began to change dramatically. One transformed into an eight-legged black cat with a spider-like physique, while the other became a White Cat that sprouted wings and hooked claws.
