Chapter 58: Chapter 56: Action

After the hatching, the first thing Feng Ling felt wasn’t the joy of success, but relief.

It was as if a heavy weight had suddenly vanished, and her entire body felt unbelievably light.

Power surged through her body.

The wound in her chest was healing rapidly.

All her fatigue and anxiety vanished. Feng Ling felt amazing!

Only then did she turn her attention to the two little creatures on the grass.

Hmm...

They were too small.

They were only a little bigger than the dead kittens.

This made Feng Ling wonder, ’Was it because there wasn’t enough "fresh flesh and blood"?’

’If I could find the corpse of a recently deceased bear, or a rhino, hippo, or elephant, could I create a much larger life form?’

’I’ll just have to wait until I build my next Nest to test that theory.’

Huangfu Miaomiao was dumbfounded the entire time. She never knew Feng Ling could create monsters.

Feng Ling scooped up the spider and the bird, placed them in the back seat, and prepared to leave.

When they saw the two dying kittens in the back seat, they became very excited. The black Cat Spider, in particular, bared its sharp chelicerae and lunged.

Huangfu Miaomiao cried out in alarm, "They don’t recognize their own kind?"

"It’s normal that they don’t. This wasn’t a rebirth or a resurrection," Feng Ling said calmly, grabbing the Cat Spider and the cat bird. "I just used the kittens’ flesh and blood to create a new species."

This was perhaps the Nest’s greatest secret—it could bring new life, and it could bring destruction. Life was its domain.

The Cat Spider and the cat bird quieted down, each perching motionlessly on Feng Ling’s shoulders.

From the moment of their birth, their minds were connected to the Nest’s, allowing them to perceive Feng Ling’s likes and dislikes, as well as understand simple commands.

Feng Ling forbade them from treating the kittens as food, so they ceased their instinctive predatory behavior.

The car started up again. As she drove, Feng Ling activated the walkie-talkie on her collar—

"Where are you now? I need a Doctor."

Su Yuqing’s voice came through her earpiece: "At the intersection 150 meters from Mengjia Hotel, near Huamao Building."

Feng Ling stomped on the gas and sped toward Huamao Building.

She was actually quite embarrassed. But time was tight, and before the operation, she had to entrust the kittens to someone reliable. The medical staff of the Inspection Bureau were the best choice.

Maintaining a straight face, Feng Ling handed the two kittens, whose eyes were still sealed shut, to a Doctor. She cleared her throat and explained, "I know I should have found a vet, but I was afraid they wouldn’t make it until after the operation."

"Oh, it’s no problem. We’ve studied veterinary medicine, you know," the Doctor said, even more nonchalantly than Feng Ling. He took the kittens and skillfully wrapped them in a blanket.

Feng Ling: "?"

Another Doctor explained with a smile, "When some Inspectors get injured, they can’t change back into human form. Their bodies are stuck in a half-human, half-beast state, so we need to have some veterinary knowledge on hand."

The two Doctors started complaining:

"Half-human, half-beast is still manageable. The most troublesome is insect-form transformation. Those insect shells are so hard, you can’t even get a needle in."

"Exactly."

This was a situation Feng Ling had not anticipated at all.

Not far away, Su Yuqing called out to her, "Feng Ling."

Feng Ling looked over at the sound of his voice and walked over. "Is everything in position?"

"Holy crap, what are those two things on your shoulder?" Zhou Diao’s eyes went wide as he pointed at the Cat Spider. "A little Pollution Body?!"

The Cat Spider didn’t like being pointed at. Its eight furry, cat-like paws gripped Feng Ling’s ponytail, and it scrambled up to lie on top of her head.

As for the other one, the cat bird... on second thought, let’s call it a Cat Owl. The way it crouched on Feng Ling’s shoulder with its neck tucked in looked just like a white owl.

Feng Ling held up her empty wrist and said proudly, "The Nest from last time—I hatched it. If I get stabbed through the chest again later, I’ll be able to recover in half an hour, tops."

Zhou Diao exclaimed in amazement, "Did you just go off somewhere to give birth?"

Su Yuqing interrupted them. "We can talk about this later. Right now, we need to discuss the plan of action."

He took out a floor plan of the hotel and explained, "This is a budget hotel, not very large, with only six floors. I had our tech team hack the hotel’s internal system to check the bookings. Right now, only seventeen rooms below the fourth floor are occupied. If we can evacuate the guests from those seventeen rooms, we can significantly reduce civilian casualties during the operation."

Looking at the floor plan, Zhou Diao said, "The hotel only has one fire stairwell. That makes it easier for us. As long as we cut the power and stop the elevators, the Alien Species will be trapped."

"As you requested, the power to this entire block will be cut in eight minutes." Su Yuqing handed Zhou Diao and Feng Ling each a black waist pouch. "These are filled with grenades and flashbangs. The grenades are for emergencies—be careful not to injure any friendlies. The flashbangs are to support the perimeter snipers and artillery. The moment a light flashes in any window, we will immediately fire a small-caliber rocket at that room. Make sure you take cover."

Zhou Diao let out a whistle. "Cooool~~"

"Captain Su!" a team member ran up, out of breath. "We just spotted a suspicious individual leaving the hotel through a window. Should we intercept?"

Su Yuqing frowned, picked up a tablet, and looked at the surveillance footage sent from the tech department.

The video showed a man staggering forward, wearing a long trench coat. He didn’t seem to have any arms.

"...Don’t intercept. We can’t risk tipping them off," Su Yuqing quickly decided. "Tell everyone to get ready. We move in eight minutes."

The team member: "Yes, sir!"

Su Yuqing then looked at Huangfu Miaomiao, who had been hiding behind Feng Ling, and handed her a headset.

Although Feng Ling and Huangfu Miaomiao weren’t official members, Su Yuqing assigned their roles without hesitation.

"Your mission is to find out how many Alien Species are on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors so we can adjust our plan on the fly."

After giving the order, he offered a carrot.

"If you complete this mission, I can guarantee you’ll be able to live a normal life in my jurisdiction, without having to worry about your status," Su Yuqing said.

Huangfu Miaomiao glanced at Feng Ling. ’It’s not like I have a choice,’ she thought.

Su Yuqing said to Zhou Diao and Feng Ling, "After Huangfu Miaomiao leaves, you’ll breach the hotel through the window of the second room on the west side of the first floor. We’ve already confirmed the backup generator is located there."

"Got it!" Zhou Diao grinned, the veins on his arms bulging as they instantly transformed into grotesque Beast Claws.

Feng Ling looked toward the distant Mengjia Hotel, her palms itching with anticipation. "Let’s move out."

Su Yuqing looked at the two of them and urged in a low voice, "Be careful."

In the dead of night, one Alien Species and two humans set off toward Mengjia Hotel.
