Chapter 62: Chapter 60: Slime Mold

Feng Ling used her Bone Blade to slice the fungus off Huangfu Miaomiao’s leg. The sensation was like cutting through a piece of fat—slick, greasy, and utterly disgusting.

Huangfu Miaomiao fell to the ground, crying as she took out her Iron Hammer.

’I should ask who tied her up,’ Feng Ling thought, ’but I have to save my babies, so there’s no time!’

The Knight outside was still hacking away, and she had no idea if her two new hatchlings were dead yet.

She ran out, hammer in hand—

The Cat Owl, at least, had some sense. It had already pulled back and was now perched on the dead Catfish Monster, tearing off and swallowing strips of flesh one bite at a time.

Meanwhile, the Cat Spider was still circling the Knight’s arms and legs, wrapping its silk around them again and again, refusing to give up!

The problem was its size. The Knight tore the silk away before its stickiness could even take hold, making it completely unable to restrain the creature.

The little Cat Spider’s fangs were completely ineffective when it tried to bite. Frustrated that it couldn’t get a meal, it just kept circling and spinning more silk.

Feng Ling couldn’t help but doubt her advancement ability again.

’I must have messed up a step somewhere. How could they be so useless?’

She raised the hammer and, aiming for the Knight’s head, brought it down with a CRASH!

Her opponent was stunned for a split second.

Not giving it a chance to recover, Feng Ling put her entire body into another vicious smash!

A hammer was definitely more effective than a scythe against this type of armored creature. She smashed the Knight Mutant so hard it nearly got a concussion, forcing it back again and again with no chance to fight back.

The Knight finally raised its shield to block. The impact of the hammer striking it sent a numbing shock through the webbing of Feng Ling’s hand.

Just then, Zhou Diao pounced from behind! His powerful Beast Claws slammed the Knight to the ground with a THUD!

With the back of its head exposed, Feng Ling didn’t hesitate. She raised the heavy Iron Hammer high and brought it crashing down—

CRUNCH!!!

Accompanied by the deafening sound, the Knight’s head cracked open.

Feng Ling and Zhou Diao let out a simultaneous sigh of relief.

Su Yuqing’s voice came through their headsets. "Can you hold on for another five minutes? The Special Attack Team is evacuating guests on the third floor, and the demolitions team is ready to move in."

"Okay, no problem," Zhou Diao replied casually.

They had already dealt with the toughest nut to crack, so he figured the rest of this floor would be easy.

Suddenly, Feng Ling saw a small, thin figure vanish at the end of the corridor.

She froze for a second, then immediately said to Su Yuqing, "Put the third-floor Special Attack Team on alert! I think an Alien Species just fled downstairs."

"What?!" Zhou Diao turned and gave chase.

Su Yuqing said over the headset, "Our team members are guarding the stairwell. They haven’t spotted anyone suspicious."

Zhou Diao stopped in his tracks and looked back at Feng Ling. "There’s only one staircase. If it didn’t go down, did it go up? Are you sure you didn’t see things? I didn’t hear any footsteps."

Zhou Diao was confident in his hearing, and he was certain he hadn’t heard any footsteps.

Feng Ling frowned. "I’m sure of what I saw. The figure was short and small, and it moved as if it were floating. It’s probably the ’shorty’ the other Alien Species was talking about."

"The demo team will be here any second. I’ll go upstairs and investigate. You go rescue Little Skeleton," Zhou Diao said, rushing toward the fifth floor.

Feng Ling turned to find Huangfu Miaomiao.

It was strange. She was sure she had saved Huangfu Miaomiao, yet Miao Miao was still in that room, crying on the floor. She hadn’t come out at all.

When Feng Ling reached Room 414 again, she froze.

The room was noticeably more cramped than before.

The thick, brightly colored fungus had bloomed like vines into one garish flower after another. Tangled tendrils spewed from the centers of these flowers, like countless squirming earthworms bursting from a blossom.

Although the fungus on Huangfu Miaomiao’s leg had been severed, it hadn’t disappeared. It was still stuck to the floor, and part of it had burrowed deep into her flesh. It was now faintly starting to merge with the surrounding growth, which was why she hadn’t left the room.

’Something’s wrong...’ Feng Ling’s heart leaped. She forcefully yanked Huangfu Miaomiao to her feet.

She realized the fungus was rapidly expanding.

She ran out of the room and saw the Alien Species corpses from the earlier fight being slowly enveloped by the growing fungus. It was like a gigantic digestive organ!

"Zhou Diao! Get downstairs! Now!!!" Feng Ling roared into her radio.

"I’m already heading down!" Zhou Diao cursed back over the radio. "What the hell is that thing up there? It grew eyes! Fuck, fuck, fuck, I dropped my flashlight..."

’Eyes?’

Feng Ling looked up warily.

The fungus on the ceiling had swollen to dozens of times its original size, and some of the especially thick, fleshy tendrils had actually sprouted eyeballs!

Countless eyes blinked in the dark corridor, searching for the location of their next meal!

Feng Ling grabbed Huangfu Miaomiao’s arm and ran towards the stairs.

A great mass of fungus was pouring down from the fifth floor, completely blocking their path.

She spun around, looking for an empty room to jump out of. A four-story fall was dangerous, but it was better than staying here to become fodder!

Her Cat Owl let out a piercing shriek. The fungus had snatched away the meal it was eating!

The fungus was growing faster!

Feng Ling burst into a room, only to find the window densely coated in fungus, leaving only a few cracks too narrow for anyone to squeeze through.

She tossed a grenade, dragged Huangfu Miaomiao from the room, and kept running!

The explosion behind them was deafening. The shockwave sent them tumbling forward in a pathetic heap.

Huangfu Miaomiao burst into uncontrollable sobs. "I’m going to die! I have to log out!"

Feng Ling immediately slapped her across the face!

CRACK! The force of the blow sent her skull mask flying.

Huangfu Miaomiao was left stunned.

"And then what? Log back in?" Feng Ling snarled, her teeth clenched. "Do you think I’ll let you off the hook when you log back in? You think the Inspection Bureau will let you go?!’

Huangfu Miaomiao’s lip quivered, and tears streamed down her face.

"I don’t want to die..." she sobbed. "Life is meaningless, but I still don’t want to die... I don’t want to die..."

"If you don’t want to die, then figure out a way to live!" Feng Ling said, dragging her back into the room they had just blown up.

But the results of the explosion were disappointing.

Maybe it was because she’d set off too many explosions, or maybe the hotel’s construction was just shoddy, but not only had she failed to clear the fungus from the window, she’d also brought down the ceiling. Now, the fungus from the fifth floor was pouring in, filling the room.

Feng Ling had no time for regrets. She grabbed Huangfu Miaomiao’s hand and ran on.

She saw a mangled pile of flesh and blood on the floor—the remains of the Vampire Worm woman. A silver Card had materialized above them.

’This might be our last chance,’ Feng Ling thought.

Without a hint of hesitation, she forcefully shoved Huangfu Miaomiao forward.

"Go absorb her Card!"

As she spoke, she summoned the Cat Spider and Cat Owl to her side, scooped them into her arms, and sprinted toward the last room at the end of the corridor.

She dragged Huangfu Miaomiao, who was in the middle of absorbing the Card, in with her.

The door shut. The lock clicked.

There was fungus in here, too, just less of it than outside.

’We can’t hold out for long,’ Feng Ling knew. ’I’m just buying time.’

She smashed the window, tossed the Cat Spider and Cat Owl out first, then spun around to ask Huangfu Miaomiao, "Are you done absorbing it?"

Huangfu Miaomiao answered dazedly, "Ab... Absorbed. The system is asking me to name the new Skill..."

"Hurry up!" Feng Ling urged, slashing at the ever-expanding fungus on the ceiling with her Bone Blade.
