Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 124: Shadows in the SnowInside the subterranean research facility, the morning routine established a strict, unyielding tempo that left no room for idleness.
Under the bright, humming halogen lamps of the primary medical wing, the ambient air smelled faintly of rubbing alcohol, cold steel, and old paper. Lu Ning moved slowly between the long rows of metallic supply shelves, her arms trembling as she carried heavy plastic storage crates filled with winter medical rations, field dressings, thermal blankets, and surgical equipment.
Every muscle in her upper body burned with unfamiliar, agonizing exhaustion. Having spent her entire life sheltered from grueling physical labor, the mind-numbing repetition of sorting, carrying, and stacking crate after crate was suffocating. Every instinct screamed at her to throw down the inventory clipboard, complain bitterly about the cold draft radiating off the lower concrete sub-levels, and demand a rest break in her room.
Yet, every single time her mouth opened to vent her frustration, the memory of midnight flashed violently in her mind with terrifying clarity.
She vividly recalled the sight of Han Ye standing over her in the dark, silent corridor—dark blades of writhing, unnatural shadow rising up behind his small frame like a living nightmare. The sheer terror of that encounter was still fresh enough to choke back every word of complaint before it could slip past her lips.
"Keep moving, Lu Ning," Dr. Zhou said calmly, her steady voice echoing softly through the quiet room as she logged pharmaceuticals at the central desk.
She didn’t even bother turning her head to check on the girl. Lin Qing had given her instructions which she planned on following word by word. "Every crate sorted and categorized today is a life saved tomorrow during a field trauma emergency. In this sanctuary, everyone earns their keep through honest labor. There are no exceptions for guests, regardless of who their family is."
Lu Ning swallowed her bitter pride, her hands shaking as she lifted another heavy box of trauma bandages onto the top shelf of the storage rack. She didn’t dare glance toward the main doors, nor did she utter a single word of discontent. She worked silently, completely humbled, her former self-righteous ego thoroughly crushed under the suffocating weight of her own fear and intense shame.

Meanwhile, miles away from the relative safety of the mountain base, the two heavy armored squad carriers crawled through the frozen valley like dark, iron titans navigating a dead, white wasteland.
Outside, a ferocious sub-zero blizzard battered the reinforced steel plating of the vehicles. The mountain wind howled continuously through the narrow stone passes, whipping fine white powder into dense whiteout curtains that severely limited visibility to less than twenty meters.
Inside the lead squad carrier, the low, steady hum of the modified diesel engine was accompanied by the quiet breathing of Captain Lu Feng’s Iron Falcon squad.
"I see something up ahead," Guo Jian reported quietly, his eyes locked onto the glowing digital heads-up display mounted on the dash. "A pack of infected creeping out of the eastern snowdrifts directly along our vector."
Through the thick, multi-layered bulletproof glass, Han Zheng leaned forward slightly to look out into the swirling white storm. A dozen grotesque figures emerged from the snow—frost-covered, mutated zombies. They moved with unnatural, jerky speed, their ears twitching as their biological senses searched the freezing air for the heat signatures of living prey.
"Keep steady on the throttle," Han Zheng ordered calmly, his deep voice smooth and reassuring over the internal comms channel. "Maintain our current speed and heading. Let the thermal cloaks do their job."
The squad members held their breath, their gloved hands resting lightly on the receivers of their assault rifles. The custom-stitched thermal cloaks retrofitted over the armored carriers functioned flawlessly, trapping, baffling, and absorbing the intense internal heat generated by the heavy engines and the human bodies inside the hull.
The two trucks glided smoothly past the frozen pack, their heavy steel treads crunching rhythmically through the deep snow drifts. The zombies turned their heads blindly toward the low rumble of movement, sniffing the icy wind with wide nostrils. But unable to detect a single drop of human warmth or body heat in the freezing air, they quickly lost interest, turning back around and drifting aimlessly back into the swirling snowstorm.
"Seems like these ones only rely on heat to sense prey. Clean pass," Lu Feng exhaled, letting out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding as a broad grin broke across his face. "Those thermal cloaks are incredible, Commander. We just walked right past a dozen of those bloodthirsty monsters without spending a single round or making a scene."
"Save the ammunition for when we actually need it," Han Zheng replied smoothly, adjusting the straps on his gloves. "We still have a long way to go before we reach the main distribution complex."
---
An hour later, after navigating through treacherous icy mountain paths, the heavy tires of the trucks crunched to a halt at the perimeter of the abandoned commercial logistics complex. The massive warehouse hub, surrounded by tall chain-link fences topped with razor wire and rusted loading docks, stood frozen in time like a silent, snow-covered graveyard in the middle of the valley.
The heavy vehicle hatches unsealed with a sharp hiss of compressed air. Han Zheng, Captain Lu Feng, and the squad members stepped out into the biting sub-zero wind, their heavy boots sinking deep into the fresh snow drifts that had accumulated against the concrete foundations.
They moved in a tight, highly practiced military combat formation, quickly clearing the outer loading bays before stepping through the breached side entrance of the main distribution building. The interior was massive, high-ceilinged, and pitch black, filled with endless rows of towering storage racks, abandoned wooden pallets, and silent forklift machinery draped in frost.
As Lu Feng raised his flashlight to sweep the upper steel catwalks, Han Zheng suddenly reached out, placing a firm, gloved hand on the captain’s shoulder to hold him back.
Han Zheng dropped smoothly to one knee, pointing his own light down toward the concrete floor near a major forklift lane.
There, cutting directly through the thin layer of windblown frost that had crept inside through the doorway, were fresh boot prints and heavy tire treads from armored transports. Scrapped ration wrappers—still showing faint traces of recent handling—lay discarded near a broken wooden crate nearby.
Lu Feng bent down beside him, his easy smile vanishing as his eyes narrowed at the tread pattern and the scorched concrete. "These aren’t civilian tracks... and those marks look like energy residue."
"Mercenaries," Han Zheng said softly, his sharp eyes examining the depth of the imprints. "And most likely... Gao Feng."
Lu Feng’s jaw tightened as he looked at the Commander. "Gao Feng? You think he fled into this area after his camp fell?"
"It fits," Han Zheng explained, his voice cold and analytical. "When Lin Tao revolted against Gao Feng back then, Gao Feng didn’t leave empty-handed. He grabbed a massive pile of weapons, critical supplies, and his most dangerous men when he retreated—including powered users."
Han Zheng traced the edge of a scorch mark on the stone. "I can’t say with a hundred percent certainty that it’s Gao Feng, but who else in this sector travels with high-grade military gear and powered enforcers? If he made camp inside this commercial district, he has the advantage of position, heavy firepower, and power-holders backing him up."
Lu Feng swallowed hard, looking toward the dark, echoing depths of the massive warehouse. A direct clash against heavily armed, battle-hardened mercenaries supported by super-powered combatants in an enclosed, unfamiliar building was an extremely dangerous gamble for a small supply team.
"A direct confrontation right now is foolish," Han Zheng said firmly, backing away quietly toward the side entry while motioning for the squad to hold their positions in the shadow of the loading bay walls. "We came out here for supplies. We don’t throw ourselves into a blind fight without full backing."
Pulling out his high-powered satellite communicator, Han Zheng adjusted the frequency dial and encrypted the signal line. The long-range transmitter hummed softly, cutting straight through the mountain blizzard to connect directly to the command desk back at the subterranean research facility.
The line clicked open almost instantaneously.
"Han Zheng?" Lin Qing’s clear, calm voice came through the speaker, crisp and devoid of static.
"Lin Qing, we’ve reached the commercial logistics complex," Han Zheng reported, his voice low and steady. "We found fresh tracks, military tire treads, and traces of powered user activity inside the main warehouse. It’s almost certainly Gao Feng. He’s armed, and he has his elite men—including the powered users—with him."
On the other end of the line, Lin Qing didn’t hesitate for a single second. Her instincts kicked in immediately. "Understood. Do not force an engagement if not necessary. Hold your perimeter position and stay hidden."
"We’re holding," Han Zheng replied calmly. "Bring heavy armor and full combat personnel. We’ll keep eyes on the warehouse until you arrive."
"I am assembling the reinforcement unit now," Lin Qing said firmly. "I’ll be there shortly."
