Beast Taming: My System is Bugged

Chapter 506 - 488: Ancient Enlightenment Ritual

The vehicle finally stopped in front of a quaint, rustic building built against a mountain.

This was the base’s management and handover center.

Ruan Taibai led Gu Ming into the main hall and spoke with someone who looked like a manager.

Soon, two staff members guided them to a spacious handover area behind the building.

The first to be brought out was a batch of Pet Beasts that had already completed their Basic Level Enlightenment.

They were of various species and had small bodies, but their eyes all seemed quite lively.

Even though their intelligence had just been awakened, they were still in their infancy and their minds were immature.

Gathered together, they quickly descended into chaos. Some were fighting, some biting, some trying to escape, some crying out randomly, and some even had pained expressions.

A staff member released a Sea Siren, a Spiritual Attribute Pet Beast, and had it sing a lullaby.

Before long, the commotion died down amidst the song.

Gu Ming was slightly affected by the Sea Siren’s hypnotic song, but with Ah Kun by his side to guard him, he was able to remain clear-headed.

Ruan Taibai, for his part, was prepared and unaffected.

He counted them carefully. After confirming the numbers, the batch of Pet Beasts was guided onto a special transport vehicle, which would then move them to the van he had brought.

Immediately after, another, clearly much larger, group of young beasts was brought over.

They were housed in special soft cages that emitted a calming and soothing aura.

Most of them hadn’t even opened their eyes and were squeaking, clearly looking for their mothers.

Without their parents’ protection and having lost the familiar scent, they were instinctively restless and anxious.

Compared to the previous batch, it was obvious they had not yet undergone a systematic awakening of their intelligence.

Gu Ming looked over, his brow furrowing slightly.

But then he considered it for a moment. ’With the breeding base sending out so many Pet Beasts every day, they obviously don’t have time to complete the basic early education.’

’That part of the work is mostly delegated to the shops under the various levels of distributors.’

When Gu Ming worked at the store last year, part of the rearing work had been assigned to him. However, he didn’t do much of it; Manager Ruan still handled the core early education tasks.

This year, it was his turn to learn more and take on this part of the early education.

"This is the batch," Ruan Taibai said.

The handover went smoothly. The cages didn’t contain only young beasts; there was also a small number of older Pet Beasts.

However, Gu Ming had learned from Manager Ruan that the elderly Pet Beasts brought out from the base were generally those with declining fertility.

Cases like Ah Kun, who was raised in the shop from the beginning until old age, were a different matter.

At that moment, Gu Ming noticed the base supervisor’s brow twitch imperceptibly when mentioning the latest request from the "Friends of Nature."

He said to Ruan Taibai in a low voice:

"Boss Ruan, handling this quantity for a few days at once is one thing, but if it’s like this every day, the volume is too large. It’s nearly depleted our stock of young beasts in several regions."

’He’s subtly advising the boss to slow down a bit, isn’t he?’

’That’s right. These aren’t products from an industrial assembly line; they’re real, living, intelligent beings.’

’Just because a large organization wants a massive number of Pet Beasts, it doesn’t mean the base can just mass-produce them.’

Ruan Taibai nodded without saying more.

The inside of the van was quiet on the way back.

Ruan Taibai enthusiastically shared his knowledge about the early education and rearing of Pet Beasts with Gu Ming.

In his view, a top-tier scholar like Gu Ming probably didn’t have much spare time to study such seemingly unimportant foundational knowledge.

Now, seeing that Gu Ming was going to participate in the story-reading session tonight, he couldn’t resist the urge to teach and began proactively explaining things to him.

As Gu Ming listened, he gazed at the fleeting scenery outside the window, reflecting on what he had seen and heard at the base.

「...」

The sun sank completely below the horizon.

Lanqi City gradually lit up, entering its nightlife phase.

Meanwhile, in the backyard of the community shop, which should have been lit only by small night lights, a warm glow suddenly appeared.

Looking down at the backyard from above, one could see the empty space had been meticulously arranged.

Ruan Taibai had cleared out a clean area, while on the half of the space they occupied, the members of the Friends of Nature were setting up for their ritual.

They weren’t using modern electric lights. Instead, they had used Fluorite, which emitted a soft white glow, to lay out a massive prayer Array on the ground, one that pulsed with a natural rhythm.

The Array Diagram resembled a tree-like totem, with branches and leaves spreading out to connect points of light that symbolized Stars.

In several small Bronze Incense Burners, a type of incense made from a mixture of sandalwood and unknown herbs was burning.

Plumes of blue smoke drifted through the air, releasing a cool, distant fragrance.

Standing amidst it all, Gu Ming felt as if he were in an ancient forest, listening to the chirping of insects and birds.

Mr. Tree’s Ancient Divine Deer lay quietly at the center of the totem, its eyes half-closed.

As the members of the environmental organization began to pray softly...

...the totemic patterns on the deer’s antlers also began to shine, flickering in and out of brightness in time with the rhythm of their voices.

With a curious expression, Gu Ming watched from the edge of the Array.

In his eyes, the ritual space, which had been filled with the scent of the forest, was suddenly permeated by a solemn, almost sacred atmosphere.

The young Grass Element-related beasts had been placed within this field. The little Pet Beasts, which had been somewhat noisy before, seemed to be soothed by this Power, becoming exceptionally quiet, even a bit reserved.

Cyan Treasure, coiled around Gu Ming’s neck like a scarf, stared wide-eyed as the prayer and storytelling session unfolded before them.

The impact of this scene was no less powerful than listening to the voice of the ancient Dragon Race.

While sensing the Dragon Pattern Tripod, Cyan Treasure listened to the prayers of the Friends of Nature and heard the story within their words.

Ruan Taibai’s side was much simpler. He had merely hung a few traditional lanterns, and their warm, yellow light spilled onto the ground, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

He settled the young beasts he was responsible for, then clapped his hands and called out to Gu Ming, but Gu Ming had his back to him and didn’t respond.

So he walked over to watch alongside Gu Ming. After a short while, he spoke:

"Ahem, God Gu, I’m ready. When do we start?"

Ruan Taibai had already seen the Friends of Nature’s Enlightenment prayer a few days ago; he was already tired of hearing the story they told.

But since it was Gu Ming’s first time hearing it, he was likely very curious.

Gu Ming, who was listening intently, made a "do not disturb" gesture.

Inside the Array, an elderly member of the organization walked to the center, sat down cross-legged, and glanced at Mr. Tree.

Mr. Tree nodded at him. The man closed his eyes, and the specter of a Grass Spirit appeared behind him, as if attached to his body.

Gu Ming took one look and instantly thought of a Skill Jiang Jinling had used—Ancient Elf Ancestors?

The Prayer Master’s tone was low and slow, like the recitation of a lost ancient poem. After finishing the lengthy opening, he transitioned into a ballad-like rhythm, beginning to narrate in a voice weathered by the ages.

It was the legend of the ancient Natural Divine Tree.

From a single dormant seed sprouting through the soil to its trunk reaching for the heavens and its canopy spreading like clouds, ages settled layer by layer into its growth rings as the world changed and the rivers of stars flowed.

The world had long since changed its appearance, but the tree always stood tall and vigorous, having never truly "died."

It carried the most primitive texture of the forest, was engraved with the scent of plants from ten thousand years ago, and safely stored the timeless memories of nature.

Those creatures that had long since vanished had already forgotten the paths they once trod.

And the newly born things of the world ought to listen to the natural Dao Sound within this story.

It was a scene that no one in the current era had ever witnessed:

So pure it was untouched by a speck of dust, so resilient it could withstand the winds and frosts of a thousand ages, embodying all the genuine beauty from the dawn of time.

Gu Ming listened quietly, an inexplicable stirring rising in his heart.

’A story like this... such a pure epic of nature... it’s truly wonderful.’
