[BL] Debut in Interstellar After Retiring as Grim Reaper
Chapter 304 - 302: OriginChapter 302: Origin
Grim reapers are born into nothing. They simply just existed because the world needed them. They are an existence to balance out the bridge between life and death. They don’t have any childhood nor anything. They appeared as what they are with full of blankness inside them except for the thought of being a grim reaper.
A literal just born to be a grim reaper. Through many experiences, they developed self-consciousness. They will feel the decision to understand many things that made them want to do something different. And over time, they also developed a heart.
A heart that made them feel emotions— feel connected to one another, especially for humans that is what they most like. That is why most of them started to feel eager and live like them, even to the point of abandoning their responsibilities as a grim reaper... or even to the point of fully letting it go.
No. 444 is different.
He never spent a single thought of this. There was no desire nor something inside him that changed his perspective even the endless years of facing humans and souls.
Even artificial intelligence seems to develop ’emotions’ as they answer to your request, but he was not. Like a puppet, doing what he just needed to do without thinking about anything else.
Even the merits that he worked so hard are merely just to be stronger and obtain weapons so he could do better in his job.
It was never him.
His life was never about himself.
The situation earlier was left inside his mind. He just couldn’t understand something.
"Was it because I have no heart?" he asked after a long silence. He looked at Yin who was sitting on a single couch near the window. They are inside the room where the Judge gave to him when he was still a ’young’ grim reaper. He was sitting at the edge of the bed.
It was very simple and because he didn’t stay here for a long time after his ’busy’ schedule, he gradually even forgot this place if it weren’t for No. 22 who reminded him earlier.
The room contains a bed, a desk with a lamp. A cabinet, a table with two chairs and a small couch near the only wide window inside his room. There wasn’t a single item other than that and the place looks even old although the materials still look strong and solid. In short, it doesn’t look like someone as the legendary grim reaper to live in a small space like this.
But Si didn’t care anyway.
"Was it because I have no heart that I couldn’t become the grim reaper that the Judge wanted?" He turned to the devil and waited for an answer.
Yin didn’t answer and there was silence again.
His gaze lowered and landed on the man’s chest. He was suddenly curious and thus stood up from his seat and walked towards the devil.
He stood in front of the devil and looked at the man’s crimson eyes. "Do you have a heart?"
The devil didn’t answer right away and just raised his eyes, meeting him.
"Do you have a heart?" he asked again, his eyes filled with curiosity.
"... Yes," the devil answered.
He was surprised for a second and without any warning, he leaned a bit and raised his hand. He put his left hand on the armchair while the right hand reached out, putting his palm on the devil’s chest— just like how he did earlier on him.
"!!!" He didn’t care about the stiffness of his body nor the disbelief on the latter’s face. Instead, his focus was on the strange feeling that he felt in his palm. He could feel something pulsating on his palm.
This is the heart.
Even the devil has. Why doesn’t he?
If it requires a heart in order to fully be the qualified grim reaper, how could he obtain this? What does he need to do? And for how long would it take? Does he need to give something? Is there a rule or a goal he must achieve?
There are many questions lingering inside his mind as his whole being was fully focused on his train of thoughts and also feeling the pulsating heart.
He really didn’t care about the man in front of him.
Meanwhile, Yin was really astonished by the man’s brazen action. His eyes went wide and his body completely turned stiff. The grim reaper is very close to him.
The devil raised his eyes and his eyes narrowed at the presence who dared near him without any fear. Seeing the man’s appearance seems to be more emphasized to him.
No. 444 undeniably has a good face. There are many outstanding appearances in the underworld, especially from what he encountered in the past where many devils specialized with lust and seduction. Their appearance is something that they lack the least.
This man looks the most abstinent and stoic. The aloofness and indifference seems to be engraved on his bones that even with every simple action, his whole temperament shouts it. Just like he didn’t care about everything, he also didn’t care about his actions.
This man seems to have no sense of boundary, even if what’s in front of him is a devil.
His eyes darken. He wanted to say that it was enough but when his eyes landed on the man’s face filled with curiosity... and even a faint longing for a heart, the words left on him.
"...." He exhaled frustratingly inside his mind and tilted his head to the side, avoiding looking at the man completely. However, his body unconsciously relaxed and he didn’t do anything in the end.
Inside this small room, this scene— a devil who was once known for his unfathomable strength and darkness sits in a couch with a complicated face and in front near him was a grim reaper who was known for his excellence and indifference with his hand on the man’s chest— stayed long and still for a while.
There was only silence... except for the loud beating of one’s heart.

On the other hand, No. 22 or named as Ji is inside the hall and facing the Judge with a hint of inquiry on his face.
"Your Majesty, what’s really the reason why you wanted No. 444 to change?" he asked directly. "His work has been stable and he didn’t do anything wrong, rather he even moves faster than anyone else. Isn’t that more convenient for you?"
The Judge unexpectedly snorted a bit. "He’s fast but the souls he sent were full of reluctance and forced elimination of resentment. He didn’t do his job right."
He blinked. "So you wanted him to taste his own medicine?"
"It is only right for him to learn that lesson. Many souls do not want to go to the afterlife because of the unfinished business in the human world. It’s a headache." he reasoned out. Ji nodded and agreed to that statement too.
"But you know that No. 444 is not like that. He doesn’t even have a heart." His face flashed with a complicated expression. "How could he empathize and feel them?"
"He will have it."
He shrugged. "But it depends on how long," he paused. "And there was even a devil beside him. That’s Yin. Aren’t you afraid that the devil will influence him negatively instead?" What if that devil entices No. 444 to spread evil and darkness?
For someone as powerful as No. 444, it’ll be hard if he becomes an enemy.
"He would not."
Ji’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. Why does he sound very confident?
"Is there something going on? Why did you assign the devil beside No. 444?" he asked.
The Judge went silent for a moment before leaving him two words.
"It’s fate."
