Chapter 311: A Nostalgic Dream

"Xiaoyuan, good night." Liu Zhang bid good night to his son but the latter acted as if he didn’t hear him and just covered his small body with a blanket. He sighed and didn’t insist. He closed the door softly and went to his room too.

Exhaustion floods inside his body as he lays on the bed. His mother’s wake ended and it’s just the two of them now inside the house. And even after many days of trying, Xiaoyuan is still not willing to open his heart for him.

He could understand. It was him who failed both of them and now, all he can do is to make up for Xiaoyuan. He can now provide the best possible resources for him so he could do whatever he wanted. He will give utmost support and guidance for every decision he wants to make.

Because that’s the only thing that he could do for him.

Still, his heart was heavy.

His mother, he couldn’t even do anything for her. His heart was filled with an endless guilt and regret for disappointing her.

"Mother... I’m so sorry," Was all he could repeatedly whisper as drowsiness envelops him until he falls asleep.

The next thing Liu Zhang knew was he saw himself standing in the small garden of the house. The night was very deep and everything was silent as always. Initially, he was confused because the last thing that he knew was what he lay on his bed and fell asleep, so how did he end up here?

Liu Zhang wanted to go back inside so he turned his back yet he was dumbfounded at what his eyes were seeing right now.

The small house somehow changes into something that is very familiar to him.

The old house.

The house that was when he was still a child.

"H-How?" His eyes widened in shock as he stood frozen at this sight. Is he really seeing things right? How did the house change back into what it used to be?!

Liu Zhang turned his head left and right and even rubbed his eyes yet no matter what he did, the house wouldn’t change. It was still the old house!

Yet just as he thought that this was already enough to stump him, he saw the door open and a familiar face surprised him.

"!!!" His body stiffened.

That familiar face looked at him directly and smiled gently. "AZhang? You are here."

He staggered. He couldn’t believe that he’s seeing the person right in front of him now.

His body trembles and he clenches his hand into fist tightly to force himself to calm down. His lips quivered and he opened it to call the person.

"M-Mother..."

Indeed. The person standing in front of him right now was the woman that he wanted to see the most, his mother. Liu Zhang stared at her. Even though the house turned into the past, the mother didn’t. Her back was slightly hunched and her long hair turned into white. Her skin wrinkles and she looks like the old woman that he saw again.

But unlike the cold corpse, she was standing alive and well.

Liu Hua didn’t seem to notice his odd reaction and beckoned him. "What are you still doing here outside? Dinner is ready! Hurry up before the rice turns cold!"

Hearing her usual nagging made his eyes turn red.

He didn’t care. He didn’t care what happened and how he ended up in this situation. He also didn’t care what will happen to him, if this is an illusion or hallucination but now that she’s with him, he will make it up to her.

"Brat, I told you to hurry up!"

A wide smile was plastered on his lips. And just like how he answered her like a child, he shouted happily. "Coming!"

The things inside the house feel even more nostalgic. The familiar furniture, utensils— everything around was just like when he was a child.

Liu Zhang saw his mother sitting on their small dining table and waving at him to hurry up.

"Hurry!" She beckoned again. "I cook your favorite steam dumplings. It has meat so you better finish it all, okay?"

As he sat on his usual seat, his mother quickly put dumplings on his bowl.

"Look at you, full of sweat! I told you to stop running around like a monkey! You stink too!" Hearing her usual nagging excites him.

"M-Mom..." Liu Zhang hurriedly cleared his throat to stop from breaking down. "Mom, I’m sorry. I... I had fun around so I forgot." He found an excuse.

"Tsk!" She rolls her eyes and picks up his chopsticks to give him. "Eat!"

"Well," He lowered his head and picked up a dumpling. He stared at it for a second before filling it inside his mouth.

At instant, he tasted the familiar savory filling of meat inside the dumpling. There was no greasy feeling and he could taste the flavor of meat, garlic and scallions inside.

"!!!" Liu Zhang’s body froze again. It’s been so many years since the last time he tasted the familiar deliciousness of the home cooked meal of his mother. Not only that it satisfies his cravings but it also brought the lost warmth of a mother that he never experienced again after leaving home.

Tears formed in his eyes and his hands trembled for a second. However he forced his hand to stay put and grip the chopsticks tightly. In the next second, his movement went faster as he kept on shoving the dumplings inside his mouth without hesitation.

He didn’t even care if his cheeks puff and he felt full, he just wanted to eat his favorite meal again.

"Why are you in a hurry?! Slow down or you’ll choke!" His mother quickly stops his movements and nags him again. He even felt her twisted his ear a bit but he didn’t care. All the things that’s happening was like he was sent on cloud nine.

He didn’t care what’s the truth or not. He missed her so much. He missed his mother very much.

Just like in the past, they ate dinner together happily. She was busy nagging him as if she was really impatient and irritated with his naughty actions but her actions said otherwise as her hands were busy putting food in his bowl, expressing her love and tenderness.

Liu Zhang felt his heart was filled with warmth and love. His mother, how was she during the years he left? He was sure how many times she nagged him again about his cruelness towards his son. He knew that she’s very disappointed but he also knew that she was still hoping that he’ll come back.

But he came too late.
