Chapter 20: BAD KITTYChapter 20: 20: BAD KITTY
"Get away from those," Nyx said as he walked over to him. "You shouldn’t touch anything in this dungeon."
"I know. I’m not foolish enough to tempt fate," June replied, his eyes still fixed on the flowers. "I just think they’re pretty... extraordinarily pretty."
The two of them stood there, quietly watching the flowers.
Their petals slowly shifted from one color to another as if they were alive.
Nyx’s scanner suddenly beeped as he held it closer to them.
"There’s a strong concentration of mana coming from these flowers. They’re definitely not ordinary..."
As they continued observing the strange flowers, a soft sound came from behind them.
"Meow..."
June and Nyx paused before slowly turning around.
A small white cat lay on the ground a short distance away, lazily licking one of its paws.
"Meow... Meow..."
"A cat." June’s face immediately lit up with a smile as he stood.
"Look! It’s a cute cat..." he said excitedly while slowly walking toward it.
"Stay back," Nyx warned. "Don’t approach random creatures in a dungeon. Don’t you ever read that in books?"
"I don’t read at all."
"...."
Nyx could only watch as June crouched a short distance away from the cat, staring at it with sparkling eyes.
"Aww... it’s so tiny and cute. Look at its fur... so white... so fluffy..." he admired with a grin. "Look at those tiny ears... so adorable. And its eyes... they’re so pretty. Even its little mouth... everything about it is just adorable. I just want to pet it."
"Don’t even think about it," Nyx warned again while adjusting his glasses. "You shouldn’t even be standing that close. We still don’t know what it is."
June pouted as he continued staring at the cat.
"I wonder what this kitty is doing inside a dungeon. Do you think it’s trapped here? Maybe we could rescue it and take it back with us."
Nyx simply stared at him.
"Oh, right. Dangerous." June sighed before looking back at the cat. "Hey, kitty. Can you tell us where we are and how to get out of here?"
"Meow."
The cat continued licking its paw.
"Too bad I don’t speak cat." June sighed again. "Then maybe point us toward an exit or something?"
The cat completely ignored him and continued grooming itself.
June frowned. "Bad kitty."
As he looked more closely, something caught his eye.
"Hey... I think there’s something attached to the cat."
Nyx walked over and stood beside him with both arms folded while looking down at the animal.
There was indeed something on its back. A tiny badge.
"Maybe we should check it. It could be a clue," June suggested.
"It’s dangerous..."
"I’ll be careful. Besides, it’s a simulated dungeon. It’s not like I’ll actually die or anything. Who knows? Maybe it’s one of the clues we’re supposed to find," June said as he slowly reached toward the badge.
The instant his hand got close, the cat reacted violently.
Nyx noticed it immediately.
As the cat swung its sharp paw toward June’s hand, Nyx moved without hesitation.
"Watch out!" Nyx warned as he grabbed June’s wrist and yanked him backward.
In the process, the cat’s claws grazed one of his fingers.
Nyx successfully pulled June out of danger, sending him stumbling straight into his arms.
The cat immediately landed on all fours before darting into the bushes, disappearing from sight.
"...."
June stood there speechless, one hand pressed against his chest.
"What the hell...? Naughty cat... what a naughty cat..."
Still shaken, he turned toward Nyx.
"Your finger..."
Without waiting for permission, June grabbed Nyx’s hand.
"It’s bleeding."
He stared at the fresh scratch running across Nyx’s finger.
"It’s nothing. Just a scratch," Nyx said as he tried to pull his hand away.
"You... how do you expect me to overlook it? That dumb cat was about to disfigure my pretty face if you hadn’t stepped in."
June grabbed his hand again before Nyx could pull away.
With no medicine around, June lowered his head, pressed his lips against the bleeding finger, and gently sucked the blood away.
Nyx instantly stiffened.
"What are you doing...?"
He instinctively tried pulling his hand back, but June held onto it and continued carefully drawing the blood away.
"Bleeding isn’t advisable inside a dungeon. Your smart self should know that," June said between movements as he continued tending to the wound.
"...."
Nyx stared at him. He remembered that he was right.
Bleeding inside a dungeon could attract dangerous creatures or trigger unpredictable reactions from monsters sensitive to mana.
"I thought you said you don’t read. How do you know that?"
"...."
June looked up before awkwardly clearing his throat.
"I’m not dumb."
June knew far more than he let people believe.
After all, he had spent years working on comics—especially this one. Whether he wanted to or not, he had been forced to learn countless details about the world. He simply chose to act ignorant because it made surviving much easier.
Nyx remained perfectly still, quietly watching June until the bleeding finally stopped.
"There." June released his hand with a satisfied smile. "All clean. I’ve officially paid back my debt."
Nyx stared at him without saying a word. For a brief moment, his heart skipped a beat. Maybe it was June’s bright smile.
Or maybe it was the lingering warmth of June’s lips against his finger.
"Now let’s find somewhere to relax until the exam is over—"
Before June could finish speaking, a strange rumbling sound echoed through the area.
"What’s that...?"
The ground trembled lightly beneath their feet, drawing both of their attention back to the flowers.
Those same flowers June had been admiring were changing colors once again.
This time, however, they weren’t becoming more colorful.
Their petals gradually darkened until they turned black and ashen.
Then they began moving.
Their vines stretched across the ground like creeping weeds, wrapping themselves around nearby trees while spreading farther and farther across the garden.
Within moments, every one of those beautiful flowers had transformed into something sinister.
June and Nyx instinctively stepped backward.
"What’s happening...?"
They quickly looked around. The sky was still bright beneath its rainbow. The trees remained lush and green. The grass still looked vibrant and peaceful.
Only those damn flowers had changed.
Just as they were trying to process what was happening, a loud feline shriek echoed through the garden.
Both of them turned at once. A cat was approaching. It was the same white cat.
Except it no longer looked anything like the harmless little creature they had seen earlier.
The cat now looked vicious, its crimson eyes glowing with hostility while long, razor-sharp fangs protruded from its mouth.
At first, it remained no bigger than an ordinary cat.
Then it started growing. Lager And larger.
Its body continued expanding until it towered over them, nearly as tall as a tree, glaring down with blood-red eyes and rows of terrifying sharp teeth.
"....."
June and Nyx stood frozen, silently staring up at the monstrous creature.
"...Not such a cute kitty after all," June swallowed nervously.
