Chapter 22: 22: FINAL WEAPON AT HAND!

"Are you okay?!"

June rushed over and dropped to his knees beside Nyx, grabbing him by the shoulders."Are you okay?"

Nyx slowly pushed himself upright. His head throbbed from the impact as he looked up at the giant cat, which was still advancing toward them. It moved at an unhurried pace, its crimson eyes carefully studying the two of them as though deciding how to finish them off.

Gritting his teeth, Nyx reached for his fallen staff. "We have to do something... We need to distract it..."

"You’re bleeding." June grabbed his arm before he could stand. "You’re hurt. How are you supposed to fight when it swatted you away that easily?"

His eyes fell on the dark bruise spreading across Nyx’s arm where the cat had struck him. "This cat is seriously something else..."

He looked back at the beast. "Shouldn’t it be taking it easy on us? I mean... this is supposed to be an entrance test."

Nyx narrowed his eyes as he observed the cat, then slowly scanned the surroundings. "...For a simulated dungeon, something feels off."

The cat continued closing the distance.

Ignoring the pain, Nyx forced himself to his feet. He gently pushed June behind him, picked up his staff, and charged forward once more.

June could only watch.The fight was painfully one-sided. Nyx swung the metal staff left and right, striking high and low while desperately dodging the cat’s savage swipes. Almost every attack missed.

The few that connected barely brushed against its fur.

The cat didn’t look hurt in the slightest. If anything, it seemed annoyed by the tiny human darting around its feet.

June glanced around. "I should at least do something... right?"

His eyes landed on his backpack lying nearby.

He rushed over, snatched it up, and frantically searched through it for anything useful.

The first thing he pulled out was his phone. Its screen was cracked beyond recognition.

"...Nope." He tossed it back inside and searched again. A bag of chips.

"..."

"Not now."

He shoved it back and reached deeper. Another bag of chips.

Then another.

Then more snacks.

June stared blankly into the bag.

"...Well, that’s hopeless."

He slowly lifted his head toward the sky as if addressing some invisible audience.

"Hey! Camera crew! I know you’re watching from somewhere! Let us out already! We don’t want to play anymore!"

Only butterflies drifted peacefully overhead. No answer came.

A second later, Nyx came flying through the air again before crashing onto the ground a few feet away.

June winced. "Seriously, stop throwing yourself at that monster. You’re actually going to die."

He glanced toward the cat. "That thing doesn’t look like it’s playing around at all..."

Nyx struggled to sit up.

"We have to keep trying... We have to do something." His breathing was uneven. "If we can’t even beat this... how are we supposed to defeat the dungeon’s final boss and clear it?"

June scoffed. "You’re still thinking about the final boss? Right now you should be thinking about surviving with all your limbs attached."

He looked at Nyx before taking a deep breath.

"Stay here."

"...What?"

"I’ll distract it."

Nyx blinked.

"And exactly how are you planning to do that?"

Before he could stop him, June stood up. He picked up Nyx’s staff from the ground and turned toward the waiting cat.

Curiously enough, the beast wasn’t attacking. Instead, it simply stood there, silently watching them. Its crimson eyes shifted toward the staff in June’s hands.

June slowly raised his chin.

"Alright..." A grin spread across his face."Let’s play a game, shall we?"

The cat tilted its head.

So did Nyx.

"...What are you doing?"

"Shut up and trust the process."

Truthfully, June had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

He’d read plenty of novels about dungeons. Actually entering one was a completely different experience. Without strength, experience, or decent equipment... Improvisation was all he had left.

"Follow my hand..."

He slowly moved the staff from side to side, the cat’s eyes followed every movement with remarkable focus.

June’s own eyes lit up.

"Oh... you want this, don’t you?"

He waved it again as the cat continued tracking it.

"I knew it."

He grinned wider. "Now..." He drew his arm back dramatically.

"Go fetch!"

With all the strength he could muster, June hurled the staff across the garden. And Instead of flying over the cat’s head, the staff came straight down with a loud bang. It smacked the cat directly on the forehead.

Silence.

The cat slowly lowered its head and then it looked at June.

"..."

"..."

"..."

An unbearably awkward silence settled over the garden.

Finally, Nyx spoke.

"...I don’t think it worked."

"Obviously it didn’t!" June immediately backed away as the cat’s expression darkened.

Crimson energy slowly curled around its massive body while its claws dug into the ground.

"You lost my staff..." Nyx sighed. "...And I think you made it even angrier."

"I know!"

June continued retreating. His mind raced desperately. He needed something.

Anything.

Without thinking, he reached into his backpack again and grabbed the first thing his hand touched.

A bag of chips.

"...Sure."

He raised it like his final weapon.

"Take this!"

He threw it with every ounce of strength he had.

The bag burst open halfway through the air. Hundreds of potato chips scattered everywhere.

For a brief moment, time itself seemed to slow.

Golden chips floated through the air, spinning gracefully before raining down across the grass.

The cat watched.

Nyx watched.

Even June watched.

Silence settled over the garden.

June swallowed nervously. He and Nyx slowly looked back up at the cat, waiting for the inevitable attack.

But instead, the giant beast calmly walked toward a single chip lying on the ground.

It lowered its head while staring at the chip on the floor for a while. And then it took a sniff. And then another sniff.

And to both of their complete astonishment, the giant cat opened its mouth and ate the chip on the floor whole.
