Chapter 24: 24: I DON’T NEED SAVING - REAL

The cat turned its full attention toward Nyx.

Gripping his staff tightly, Nyx steadied himself as the beast lunged. He swung the weapon straight at its face with a thud!

The blow scraped across the cat’s muzzle.

It let out a furious growl but barely flinched, remaining firmly rooted where it stood as it glared down at him.

Nyx gasped.

"Is this even a simulated dungeon anymore...?"

He quickly stepped back as the cat attacked again, its vicious claws slashing toward him. Nyx barely managed to block the strike with his staff, using every ounce of strength he had to push the massive paw away.

Meanwhile, June frantically rummaged through his backpack, searching for anything useful.

Suddenly, something wrapped around his ankle.

"What the—"

A thick tree root shot out from beneath the flowerbeds, coiling tightly around his leg before yanking him upward.

"Ah!"

His backpack slipped from his grasp as he was hoisted into the air.

"What the hell is this?!"

Following the root with his eyes, he realized it had emerged from the strange flowers that had been changing colors earlier.

"I knew you guys couldn’t be trusted!"

He pointed accusingly at them.

"Put me down!"

The flowers ignored him. Instead, more roots crawled upward, wrapping around his other leg until both ankles were securely bound.

June struggled for several moments, twisting and kicking in every direction as he tried to break free.

Nothing worked.

The roots held him firmly several feet above the ground. Eventually, he gave up. Crossing his arms, he sighed dramatically. " ...I’ll just stay here, I guess."

Another sigh escaped him.

"At least it’s safer up here."

From his new vantage point, he looked down at the battle below.

Nyx continued exchanging blows with the giant cat.

Although the monster wasn’t quite as frenzied as before, its attacks remained powerful enough to force Nyx completely onto the defensive.

Each swipe of its claws was met with another desperate block from the metal staff.

June couldn’t help noticing how skilled Nyx actually was. He wasn’t weak at all.

His weapon control was solid, and his combat instincts were impressive.

The real problem was simply that the cat was stronger in every possible way.

June couldn’t tell whether that was because Nyx was only an F-Rank Esper... Or because this cat was far stronger than it had any right to be.

Before he could think any further, his eyes met Nyx’s.

Nyx glanced upward and froze.

There stood June, dangling peacefully in midair. Not struggling or even screaming. Just hanging there with his arms folded.

Nyx blinked in confusion before taking several quick steps backward.

The cat immediately followed.

Then, without warning, Nyx sprinted forward.

He planted one foot against a rock and launched himself high into the air.

June frowned. "...What’s he doing now?"

He watched as Nyx soared over the cat before changing direction in midair.

This time, he was flying straight toward June.

June blinked. Everything seemed to slow down. Nyx’s staff was raised and his eyes were fixed on the roots.

Then realization hit. "..Wait." June’s eyes widened. "No! I don’t need saving!" He began waving both hands frantically. "It’s actually safer up here! I don’t need a prince in shining armor right now!"

Unfortunately, It was too late.

Nyx reached him in a single leap and slammed the staff directly into the thick root holding June.

The root snapped apart.

"Ah!"

June was suddenly free.

He immediately began plummeting toward the ground. His arms flailed wildly and eyes widened.

A scream caught in his throat.

He was falling.

Below him, Nyx had already begun falling as well, his back facing the ground after using all his momentum to cut the roots.

Neither of them had any hope of landing safely.

June watched the ground rush toward him while Nyx spread both arms open. Instinctively, he caught him.

June crashed straight into Nyx’s embrace as both of them slammed heavily onto the ground.

Nyx hit first, taking the full force of the impact on his back.

June landed safely on top of him as their lips collided hard.

It happened so suddenly that neither of them had time to react. For several long seconds, they simply remained frozen.

June lay atop Nyx, both hands pressed against his chest, while their lips remained accidentally locked together.

Their eyes stayed wide open. Neither of them blinked and neither of them moved.

They simply stared into each other’s eyes in complete shock.

Nyx swallowed. The faint sweetness lingering on June’s lips filled his senses. A light strawberry flavor. His heartbeat thundered loudly inside his chest.

So loud that it almost felt painful. Heat suddenly rushed through his entire body.

It spread rapidly through every vein, flooding him with an overwhelming surge of energy.

At first, he dismissed it as nothing more than the shock of the unexpected kiss. But the feeling only grew stronger.

Nearby, the giant cat had completely stopped moving.

It simply sat there, tilting its head as it curiously watched the two of them lying on the ground.

Even the strange roots slowly crept closer, as though they, too, wanted a better look at what had just happened.

As though they were all trying to get a closer look of the kiss.

June was the first to recover. He hurriedly pushed himself backward, practically rolling off Nyx before scrambling away.

His cheeks burned bright red. "What... what just happened?"

He rubbed both cheeks before touching his lips. They were bleeding slightly from the collision.

Nyx, however, remained lying where he was. He stared blankly at the sky. His vision was becoming blurry. His heartbeat refused to slow.

Every part of his body burned with intense heat as power coursed wildly through his veins.

He swallowed hard and reached up to grip his own neck.

Closing his eyes, he tried to steady his breathing. Something was happening and it wasn’t because of the kiss.

The heat, the energy, the strange sensation spreading throughout his body... It felt unfamiliar.

Yet somehow it also felt strangely familiar.

Slowly, Nyx opened his eyes and his pupils had turned gold.
