Chapter 26: 26: EMPTY DUNGEON

"Brother..."

June gasped as he hurried toward the portal, a broad smile spreading across his face. He couldn’t describe how relieved he felt to see Grey standing on the other side. Right now, the only thing on his mind was leaving this nightmare of a dungeon.

Just as he was about to reach the portal, he heard a dull thud behind him.

He turned. Nyx had collapsed to his knees.

June froze for a moment.

Everything in him wanted to leave immediately. The memory of those familiar golden flames and the emotionless look in Nyx’s eyes still sent chills down his spine. It was the same terrifying presence the novel’s villain carried whenever he stood over the people he had killed.

But he couldn’t bring himself to leave Nyx behind.

With a sigh, June turned around and ran back.

He knelt beside Nyx and slipped an arm around his shoulders to support him. Looking closely, he realized the golden flames had already disappeared, and Nyx’s eyes had returned to their normal color.

Nyx’s breathing was uneven as he looked around in a daze.

His thoughts seemed completely scattered, as though he couldn’t make sense of everything that had just happened.

"Come on," June said softly. "Let’s get out of here. We can figure everything else out later."

He slowly helped Nyx to his feet.

Supporting each other, the two staggered toward the glowing portal, eager to leave before anything else decided to crawl out of that bizarre dungeon.

"Brother!"

June called out excitedly as he looked toward Grey standing with his squad beyond the mirror-like gateway. He knew they probably couldn’t hear him, or even see him clearly through the shimmering portal, but he couldn’t stop himself from shouting.

As soon as they drew close enough, the portal reacted on its own.

A powerful force pulled both of them forward before swallowing them whole.

The golden gateway shimmered once before collapsing into countless particles of light.

The enormous stone gate leading into the dungeon slowly creaked open.

Grey En and the squad waiting outside instinctively stepped back, weapons drawn as they watched the entrance reveal itself.

They had been standing before the anomaly dungeon for quite some time.

After locating it, they had tried every available method to force the gate open, using specialized equipment and every known unlocking procedure.

Nothing had worked.

It was as though something inside the dungeon had deliberately sealed it shut, refusing to let anyone enter.

Yet now, without warning the gate was opening on its own.

Everyone tightened their grip on their weapons.

"...What’s happening?" one of the team members asked quietly as the massive doors continued sliding apart.

"Stay alert." Grey drew his sword.

Based on reports from previous anomaly dungeons, they expected a violent ambush the moment the entrance fully opened.

Instead, nothing happened. Silence greeted them.

Grey exchanged a glance with his squad.

Receiving his signal, the five-member team cautiously entered the dungeon.

Three Espers—including Grey—and two female Guides slowly advanced through the cave, carefully scanning every corner while keeping their weapons raised.

The atmosphere was unnaturally quiet. Dead flowers covered the ground. Twisted trees surrounded them.

The air itself felt stale, as though life had long since abandoned the place.

"...It’s empty." One of the Guides looked around in disbelief. "I can’t detect a single energy signature." She frowned.

"How is that possible?"

The second Guide extended her senses farther into the forest before shaking her head. "Every trace of energy is gone."

She looked toward Grey. "...It’s almost like someone already cleared the dungeon."

Someone crouched near the ground. The silver-haired Esper brushed his fingers across the soil before closing his eyes. "...Someone was here."

He slowly stood. "I can still feel the remnants of a strange energy lingering in the ground."

He frowned thoughtfully. "But it’s fading quickly."

The first Guide looked confused. "How could someone enter before us... and clear an anomaly dungeon this quickly?"

"And if someone really did..." the second Guide added, "...did they even survive?"

No one answered.

Grey silently surveyed the area with his enhanced vision while the others continued discussing their theories.

As his gaze swept across the battlefield, something caught his attention.

He walked over and bent down.

Lying half-buried beneath the dirt was a small academy badge. Grey picked it up and brushed away the dust.

"...June En."

His eyes lingered on the engraved name. For the first time since arriving, surprise crossed his usually calm expression.

He slowly lifted his gaze toward the empty battlefield.

"I know who was here."

The others immediately turned toward him, expecting an explanation.

Instead, Grey calmly slipped the badge into his pocket. He turned toward the exit. "Let’s go to Arcadia Academy."

June and Nyx were suddenly hurled through a swirling golden portal that gradually shifted into brilliant blue.

Both of them let out startled screams as they were thrown through the tunnel before shooting back into the real world.

A blue portal opened high above the academy grounds.

The two of them tumbled out together.

They crashed heavily onto the ground, with June landing squarely on top of Nyx once again.

"Ouch..." Nyx groaned as he lay flat on his back, both arms spread wide.

June’s face was buried against his chest.

"My head..."

June muttered while pressing a hand against his forehead. He slowly rolled off Nyx and lay beside him with a painful groan.

"My waist... Everything hurts..." After lying there for a few seconds, June slowly opened his eyes.

The moment he looked around,his jaw dropped. Hundreds of people were staring directly at them.

They were back. Back at Arcadia Academy.

Back at the same examination grounds where every student had entered their simulation portals earlier that day.

The other students had already completed their examinations.Some had passed and some had failed miserably.

Others had been automatically removed when the time limit expired before they could finish.

Now every single one of them sat watching the strange portal that had continued flickering between blue and gold long after every other portal had closed.

It was unlike anything anyone had ever seen.

Not just the students, The Chancellor, the Principal, the Deans, academy staff, invited VIP Espers, Guides, and representatives from several major organizations had all gathered around, their attention fixed on the two students who had just fallen out of the mysterious portal.

June slowly sat up, blinking in confusion as he looked from one stunned face to another.

"...What’s going on?"

Before anyone could answer, a sharp electronic beep echoed across the examination grounds.

Above the arena, a massive holographic screen flickered to life and the automated rankings for the final examination had appeared.
