Chapter 31: 31: EFFORTS PAYING OFF

June En gasped as the thoughts of all the trending topics and news articles he’d seen throughout the day flashed before his eyes.

He stared at his parents in disbelief. "Are you two after my life or what...?" He understood they were excited and proud of him, and that this was their way of celebrating his achievement.

But did they know he was being torn apart online because of it?!

And now they were holding a grand celebration for him? With all the elites attending?

June gasped again. At this rate, he definitely wasn’t escaping the academy anytime soon. With this much attention on him, his dream of living a peaceful salted fish life had completely gone down the drain.

Mrs. En happily walked over to cut the cake while looking at Grey. "And where the hell is your older brother? He should be here celebrating his little brother."

"He’s probably busy with work," Grey replied casually as he continued eating.

Mr. En gave him a light slap on the shoulder. "You should’ve told him to leave that damn job and come here."

"Always busy. He’s never around whenever something good happens," Mrs. En grumbled as she finished cutting the cake. She smiled brightly at June and held out a slice. "Here, eat. Eat a lot so you can grow fat and healthy before the academy starts."

"I’m on a diet," June protested.

"The hundred bags of chips in your room say otherwise," Mr. En shot back with a glare. "Now eat."

June had no chance to refuse. His mother stuffed the cake into his mouth while he chewed absentmindedly, staring blankly into space.

Around him, the atmosphere was lively as his parents celebrated with genuine happiness. Grey, on the other hand, was simply trying to finish his meal, but even that wasn’t possible because their mother kept pestering him to call their daughter overseas for a video call.

"She’ll be so proud of him," Mrs. En insisted.

June sat in the middle of it all, staring into nothingness while imaginary tears streamed down his face as he slowly chewed the cake.

The thought of actually attending the academy gave him goosebumps. It reminded him of the tragic fate that awaited his character in the novel—a fate he had been desperately trying to escape.

Now his original plan had completely failed, which meant he needed to come up with a Plan B... and fast.

---

A sharp contrast to the lively celebration at the En household could be found at the Faux residence.

That night, Nyx sat with his parents around the dining table. The maid had already served dinner, and the three of them ate in complete silence.

The atmosphere was unbearably tense. It was so quiet that even the sound of a pin dropping would have echoed through the room.

The silence dragged on until Mr. Faux finally cleared his throat.

"I heard you got into the academy."

"Mmm." Nyx nodded quietly.

Silence returned.

"That’s good," Mrs. Faux said coldly. "That’s exactly how it should be. Winning... and ranking first while doing it." She lifted her eyes to him. "Anything less would’ve been pathetic."

"Mmm." Nyx simply nodded again, adjusting his glasses before continuing to eat with his cutlery.

Mr. Faux calmly added, "According to the reports, you entered a real anomaly dungeon." He stared at his son through his glasses without a trace of emotion. "And you cleared it."

"Mmm."

"Good," Mrs. Faux replied. "It’s fortunate that anomaly dungeon appeared. Otherwise, I don’t know what your fate would’ve been."

She scoffed before adding without hesitation, "If you had failed to accomplish anything, it would’ve been better if you had never come back from that dungeon at all. Frankly, everyone would’ve been better off if you’d simply disappeared in there."

Mr. Faux ignored her remark and instead watched his son carefully.

"In the dungeon... did you feel any unusual power?" he asked. He knew very well that an F-Rank Esper couldn’t clear such a dungeon without something extraordinary happening.

Nyx hesitated before giving a slow nod.

Mr. Faux continued watching him.

"And how did that power awaken?" he asked. "Who triggered it? Was it your Guide?"

Nyx froze for a brief moment.

The memory of that accidental kiss immediately resurfaced in his mind.

He knew exactly what his father was trying to confirm. If his father discovered that June had anything to do with his sudden awakening, June would never be left alone. He would become another target for his father’s endless schemes and experiments.

Nyx couldn’t let that happen. He slowly shook his head.

"No... it wasn’t him." He kept his eyes lowered to his plate. "He’s weak. He couldn’t even guide me properly."

Mr. Faux stared at him for several long seconds before asking, "Then what happened?"

Nyx forced himself to think quickly.

"While we were inside the dungeon... I suddenly felt a surge of energy." He kept his voice calm despite the nervousness building inside him. "Then the power awakened, and I was able to clear the dungeon."

Silence settled over the table once more as both of his parents quietly studied him.

After what felt like forever, Mr. Faux finally nodded.

"That’s good." His expression remained unreadable. "At least all the effort we’ve invested in you hasn’t been wasted. It’s finally producing results."

Mrs. Faux smiled faintly.

"Exactly. With this, we’ll finally be able to get everything we’ve been waiting for." She turned toward her husband. "Mr. Kelvin Dan should be interested after hearing about these signs. Perhaps it’s time we arranged another meeting. I believe we’ll have quite a lot to discuss."

The moment that name was mentioned, Nyx’s body stiffened.

His fingers tightened around the cutlery as his hands began trembling uncontrollably beneath the table. He kept his eyes fixed on his plate, silently listening to every word they spoke.

Mr. Faux nodded in agreement.

"I’m sure he’ll want to see us again. It’s been a while." He looked directly at Nyx. "You should prepare yourself as well. The two of you will have plenty of work ahead now that you’ve finally shown signs of possessing real power. They’ll certainly be interested."

Nyx remained silent. Inside, he was trembling.

The mere mention of that name dragged horrifying memories to the surface—memories that sent chills crawling down his spine.

But he couldn’t refuse. He couldn’t protest. He couldn’t even bring himself to say no.

All he could do was lower his head... and quietly nod.
