Chapter 37: 37: RECOMMENDATIONS

Grey scoffed.

"I told you to stop listening to rumors," he muttered before glancing at June. "Besides, they’re not interested in him because of his skills. They just want to recruit him so they can turn him into a lab rat."

June nodded in agreement.

"He’s right. After everything that happened, I should probably be careful around organizations like that."

Mr. En slowly nodded in understanding. "Oh... that actually makes sense."

Then he turned toward June and smacked him lightly on the shoulder. "You..."

"Ouch! What did I do this time?" June shrank away, rubbing his shoulder.

"Just listen to your elder brother and be careful, alright?" Mr. En warned.

"Yeah... sure."

Mrs. En folded her arms before narrowing her eyes at him.

"And what exactly was all that performance when you arrived earlier?" she demanded. "Were you trying to imitate a peacock or simply drag our family’s reputation straight into the gutter?"

She smacked his shoulder again.

"Ouch..." June winced. "I was just trying to be creative."

"Creative my foot," Mr. En snorted. "I was so embarrassed I almost pretended I wasn’t your father. Your mother practically denied knowing you."

"I did not!" Mrs. En immediately protested.

Lucas let out a quiet scoff. "He probably left his brain behind in that dungeon."

June slowly turned toward him and shot him another murderous glare.

Rolling his eyes, June continued rubbing his aching shoulder while his parents resumed bickering among themselves. As he casually looked around the hall, his gaze landed on Nyx.

Nyx was standing with his parents and another distinguished group of guests whom June immediately recognized as government officials.

The moment he saw them, his heart sank.

He knew exactly who those people were. And he also knew they were nothing but bad news. Especially for Nyx.

---

Nyx stood quietly in the distance, dressed neatly in a tailored black suit. His golden hair had been carefully styled, and without his usual glasses, he looked even more striking tonight.

He remained beside his parents as they moved from one important guest to another, greeting only the influential people they had specifically come to meet.

Earlier, they had approached the Chancellor and Principal of Arcadia Academy.

Nyx stood silently while watching his parents smile warmly, speaking with such gentle kindness that anyone unfamiliar with them would have thought they were saints.

"My son is quite special," Mrs. Faux said with an elegant smile. "Most people simply haven’t realized it yet. We’d appreciate it if you could look after him and give him the attention he deserves."

Mr. Faux nodded.

"You never know. He may very well become one of the academy’s greatest assets... perhaps even one of the nation’s."

Mr. Gregory smiled politely. "Don’t worry. We’ll make sure he’s well taken care of."

Nyx remained silent throughout the conversation.

Every now and then, however, his eyes wandered toward June, who was still being dragged around the hall by his parents.

He watched June complain dramatically every time one of them smacked him on the shoulder.

He watched the playful arguments, the teasing, the laughter...

Before he realized it, a small smile had appeared on his own face.

He found himself strangely drawn to the warmth surrounding the En family.

Compared to the cold silence of his own family, their lively banter seemed so colorful... so alive.

For just a moment, he wished he could walk over and join them. But he couldn’t.

His parents continued introducing him to elite Espers from one prestigious organization after another, exchanging business cards and maintaining friendly relationships while subtly asking each of them to keep an eye on their son.

"When he graduates from the academy," Mrs. Faux repeated confidently to nearly every organization they met, "I’m certain he’ll be joining yours."

Once those introductions were over, Mr. Faux finally led them toward the people they had truly come to see.

Mr. Kelvin Dan.

"Good evening, Mr. Dan." Mr. Faux greeted him with a firm handshake. "It’s been quite some time."

Nyx quietly stared at the man standing before him.

He didn’t actually know much about Mr. Kelvin Dan. Yet, for some reason, simply standing near him filled him with fear.

Mr. Kelvin Dan was the Director General of the National Esper and Guide Association—NEGA—the highest-ranking official beneath the Minister of Esper and Guide Affairs. Rumor had it that despite technically answering to the Minister, he wielded even greater influence through his intelligence, political connections, and manipulative methods.

Even at first glance, Mr. Dan was an intimidating man.

His expression remained firm and unreadable even when he smiled, and the long scar running across his right eye only made him look more frightening beneath his glasses.

Nyx gradually tuned out the conversation. He didn’t want to hear what his parents were discussing.

Even so, he could already guess the topic.

They were recommending him. Offering him over. Giving Mr. Dan every reason to take an interest in him.

Once the conversation ended, all three of them turned toward Nyx with pleasant smiles.

Those smiles made his stomach churn. To him, they looked less like kind adults...and more like predators staring at their next meal.

Cold sweat gathered across his forehead as his vision slowly blurred.

"You should spend more time with Mr. Kelvin," he vaguely heard his father say. "He’ll be able to help you a great deal."

Nyx had no choice but to nod.

In reality, all he wanted to do was run as far away from this man as possible.

He couldn’t explain why.

He had never truly interacted with Mr. Dan before. He barely even knew him.

Yet his face constantly haunted the back of his mind, and even hearing his name sent an uncomfortable chill through his body.

Something deep inside him kept screaming that he should fear this man.

Mr. Dan smiled pleasantly before extending his hand.

"It’s nice to finally meet you, Nyx. I hope we’ll get along well. I’m looking forward to knowing you better."

Nyx froze.

His eyes lingered on the outstretched hand while his mind desperately searched for an answer.

Should he accept it? Did he even have a choice?

With both of his parents watching, refusing wasn’t an option.

Slowly, he reached out to return the handshake.

Just before their hands could meet, however, another hand suddenly slipped between them and firmly grasped Mr. Dan’s instead.

"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Director General," June said with an easy smile, his eyes meeting Mr. Dan’s without the slightest hint of hesitation.
