Chapter 38: 38: SHADY

"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Director General," June said, his eyes fixed on Mr. Dan with a lingering smile.

He had walked straight over and casually took the man’s outstretched hand before Nyx could, instantly leaving everyone around them stunned.

Mr. and Mrs. Faux looked down at June in surprise. Nyx was the most shocked of all. He stared at June, fighting the urge to call his name, but instead remained silent, his eyes glittering with quiet excitement.

Mr. Dan studied him for a moment before speaking. "And you are... the guide from the news?"

June shook his head with a smile. "No, I’m not the guide from the news. I’m June. June En." He gestured toward Nyx. "And I’m his best friend."

Mr. and Mrs. Faux exchanged unhappy looks. They clearly weren’t pleased to see him here.

Mr. Dan slowly nodded and smiled politely. "Ah, I see. Nice to meet you too."

June sighed dramatically. "You know what? It’s actually not that nice to meet you anymore. I don’t really like dealing with government people."

For a brief moment, nobody spoke.

Nyx stared at him in surprise while Mr. Dan maintained the same composed expression.

"I see..." Mr. Dan replied calmly.

June hated that expression. He hated that smile. Most of all, he hated the man standing before him.

Everything he knew about Mr. Dan came from the novel. He was a monster disguised as a respectable official—the very man who had turned Nyx into the terrifying villain of the original story.

The moment Nyx awakened his strange powers, Mr. Dan had taken him away under the excuse of research. From there, Nyx became nothing more than a laboratory specimen. Endless experiments, manipulation, and inhumane treatment eventually molded him into the monster the world feared.

June saw him for what he truly was: a greedy, twisted man willing to sacrifice anyone for unethical experimentation. No matter how desperately June wanted to avoid the original plot, he couldn’t just stand here and watch Nyx walk into that trap.

"That’s perfectly fine, kid," Mr. Dan said, withdrawing his hand before turning toward Nyx again. "The two of you are rare talents. Talents worthy of making our country proud."

He smiled pleasantly. "Why don’t you both visit my organization sometime? I could personally help two F-ranks rise through the ranks and become national treasures. What do you say?"

June smiled right back. "Too bad we’re both too lazy to become anything greater than we already are. Let’s leave all that hard work to the S-ranks, okay, sir?"

Mr. Dan chuckled softly. "You could always make an exception. I see tremendous potential in both of you."

"That’s exactly what the scammer who convinced me to spend half my salary on a fake BTS concert ticket told me once," June replied casually, folding his arms with a lazy yawn.

The entire group fell silent.

Even Mr. Dan seemed momentarily speechless, while Nyx’s parents looked utterly stunned. Nyx himself stared at June with growing anxiety. He couldn’t believe someone was speaking to Mr. Dan like this.

June continued before anyone else could respond.

"Besides, we’re still students at the academy. It isn’t exactly appropriate for you to go around recruiting us through shady methods, don’t you think?"

Mr. Dan raised an eyebrow. "Shady methods?"

June smiled pleasantly, but his eyes remained serious.

"This is supposed to be my celebration. My family’s event. My money paying for all this food." He looked directly at Mr. Dan and then at Nyx’s parents. "Not a recruitment fair."

Without waiting for anyone to reply, he turned back with another cheerful smile.

"And if you’ll excuse me... I’m borrowing my friend for a while."

He grabbed Nyx’s hand and immediately pulled him away from the group.

Nyx didn’t resist. He simply followed behind June, quietly watching him with gentle eyes.

The three adults remained where they stood, speechless as they watched the pair disappear into the crowd.

June finally stopped in front of the banquet table before letting go of Nyx’s hand.

"Now this is more like it," he said happily.

The banquet stretched across the ballroom, overflowing with extravagant dishes. Golden roast turkeys, honey-glazed ham, prime rib, herb-roasted lamb, butter-garlic lobster, and countless other delicacies filled the endless table. Between them sat bowls of creamy mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, buttered corn, fresh salads, artisan bread, and more desserts than June could count.

The rich aroma of roasted meat, herbs, butter, and spices drifted through the air.

June’s eyes sparkled.

"I’ve been so busy that I almost forgot why I came here in the first place."

He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, letting the delicious scent fill his lungs.

"It smells exactly how I imagined..." he sighed happily. "The true paradise of rich people’s banquets."

He became so absorbed in admiring the feast that he completely forgot Nyx was still standing beside him.

Nyx didn’t mind at all.

Instead, he quietly watched June with a small smile, his eyes fixed on the obvious excitement written across June’s face as he admired the food like a child visiting an amusement park for the first time.

When June finally snapped out of it, he turned back.

"Oh."

Nyx immediately hid the smile that had unconsciously formed on his lips, returning to his usual calm expression.

June looked around cautiously before lowering his voice.

"You should stay away from that scary man, okay? He’s bad news. Seriously. Stay as far away from him as possible unless you want to end up going insane."

Nyx simply stared at him silently, looking every bit like a confused puppy that had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.

June sighed.

"You’re way too innocent for this world. Honestly, how did you even become the villain of this comic? That author seriously had issues."

Shaking his head, he turned back toward the banquet.

"Instead of wasting time with those toxic adults, stay beside me and enjoy the food."

Nyx slowly nodded like an obedient puppy.

"That’s more like it."

June smiled and reached up to pat him on the head.

Nyx instinctively flinched and almost stepped back, but stopped himself. He simply stood there, allowing June to gently ruffle his hair while quietly staring down at his smiling face.

June nodded in satisfaction.

"There we go... good boy."

He thought for a moment before grinning.

"I’ve decided. From now on, I’ll give you another nickname."

Nyx remained perfectly still, his gaze fixed on June as though every expression, every smile, and every word was imprinting itself somewhere deep inside him.

"Golden Puppy," June declared proudly with a satisfied nod. "That’s your new name for now."
