Chapter 39: 39: TOO BUSY

Soon, June wandered over to the dessert section of the banquet table. He took his time admiring the extravagant display before him: towering layered cakes, cheesecakes, fruit tarts, éclairs, cream puffs, macarons, cupcakes, chocolate truffles, and countless other delicate pastries.

Everything about it screamed luxury.

June smiled as he reached for a cupcake. "This thing looks like it’s worth millions." He turned to Nyx, who was quietly watching him. "Here, have one."

Nyx looked at the cupcake before looking back at June.

"No... I don’t eat sweets."

June blinked in disbelief. "Who doesn’t eat sweets?"

"Me."

"Why?"

Nyx hesitated. His parents had always forbidden sweets, insisting they disrupted the energy an Esper needed. They had constantly reminded him that, as an F-Rank Esper, he needed healthier meals instead of wasting time on desserts.

"It’s just... unhealthy."

June sighed dramatically.

"You health freaks are all the same." He shook his head before holding the cupcake closer to Nyx. "Now isn’t the time for that. Just enjoy yourself for once. Trust me, you’ll love it."

Nyx leaned back slightly, staring at the cupcake.

"This..."

"Come on." June smiled encouragingly. "Trust me."

Nyx had no intention of trying it. He really didn’t.

But as he looked at June’s reassuring smile, he found himself giving in.

Slowly, he opened his mouth and took a small bite.

The moment the sweetness melted across his tongue, his eyes widened.

Flavors exploded in his mouth like a burst of color. Rich cream, soft sponge, sweet frosting... it felt as though thousands of brilliant colors had suddenly come alive on his tongue.

He couldn’t even remember the last time he had tasted something like this.

It felt as though the day he stopped eating sweets was the same day the world had lost its color.

Now, with just one bite, everything seemed vibrant again.

As he looked at June standing before him, he somehow felt those same vivid colors surrounding him.

His entire mouth had been blessed.

"So?" June asked eagerly. "How is it?"

Nyx blinked and quickly suppressed every trace of excitement.

"It’s... normal."

June immediately sighed.

"You’re boring."

He turned back to the dessert table and continued sampling one dessert after another while Nyx quietly watched him.

Nyx couldn’t look away.

Watching June happily melt over every new flavor somehow felt even more satisfying than eating the desserts himself.

He watched June stuff an entire cream puff into his mouth with every intention of swallowing it whole like a thief afraid someone would steal it. Unable to help himself, Nyx smiled.

The moment June glanced in his direction, however, Nyx immediately wiped the smile off his face and returned to his usual calm expression.

June still had the cream puff stuffed in his mouth when Simon walked over.

Dressed in a tailored dark suit, Simon looked elegant as ever, his neatly styled dark hair giving him the appearance of a perfect young master.

"Since when did you become interested in desserts?" Simon asked. "Didn’t you hate sweets?"

June froze.

He stared at Simon in horror.

His mouth was still full of cream puff.

Panic flashed across his face as he immediately turned away, pulled the cream puff out of his mouth, hurriedly cleaned himself up, and only then turned back to face Simon.

"What?" June folded his arms. "I can’t start enjoying sweets now?"

Simon cleared his throat.

"I didn’t say that."

His gaze briefly shifted toward Nyx before returning to June.

"Anyway..." Simon continued, "Congratulations on ranking first and getting into the academy. I suppose all your hard work paid off."

June narrowed his eyes. Was that sarcasm?

Going to the movies and doing yoga instead of studying definitely didn’t count as hard work.

"Thanks... I guess."

Simon nodded before looking at Nyx again.

"I honestly didn’t think the two of you had it in you. An F-Rank Esper and an F-Rank Guide clearing a dungeon..." He paused thoughtfully. "That’s fascinating."

His curiosity got the better of him.

As he slowly reached out to take June’s hand, intending to examine the energy flowing through him, Nyx immediately stepped between them.

Without hesitation, Nyx grabbed June’s hand first, holding it firmly in his own.

June blinked. He looked up at the unexpectedly possessive Golden Puppy.

This was definitely new.

Nyx said nothing.

His expression remained calm, but his eyes had turned noticeably colder as he stared directly at Simon.

It was obvious what Simon wanted. He wanted to examine June’s energy.

Nyx wasn’t even willing to let him touch him.

The two silently exchanged sharp looks, neither willing to back down.

June watched them for a moment before realizing Simon probably suspected he’d somehow cheated his way to first place and wanted to confirm it for himself.

Honestly, he didn’t care.

Gently freeing his hand from Nyx’s grip, June looked at Simon.

"Next time, don’t go around grabbing someone else’s guide without permission, okay?"

Simon immediately cleared his throat.

"Don’t misunderstand. I’m only here because my parents wouldn’t stop bothering me to come say hello."

June smiled pleasantly.

"Oh, trust me. The only reason I’m standing here talking to you is because basic courtesy says I should be nice to guests at my own party."

Simon was left completely speechless.

He couldn’t understand what had happened to June.

Wasn’t this the same June who had spent years chasing after him?

Why was he acting like this now?

Was it another one of June’s schemes? Was he pretending to lose interest just to attract his attention?

Simon couldn’t tell.

He had known June since childhood. He knew exactly how stubborn and calculating the spoiled young master of the En family could be whenever he wanted something.

Finally, Simon spoke again.

"My mother asked me to invite you for a dance... but I’m not going to."

"No need." June smiled brightly before casually taking Nyx’s hand. "I wouldn’t have danced with you even if you begged."

He looked at Nyx with a grin.

"I already have a dance partner, and we’re just about to head to the dance floor."

June waved him off with a smile. "So... tell your parents I’m busy."
