Chapter 59: ANOMALY DUNGEONChapter 59: 59: ANOMALY DUNGEON
June opened his eyes to find himself lying on snow-covered ground. The wavering sound of distant waves drifted through the air as his blurred vision slowly came into focus.
"What...?" he muttered, struggling to sit up. As he settled onto the snow, his eyes swept across the familiar landscape. The stormy, frozen wasteland stretched endlessly before him, buried beneath layers of snow.
"Why the hell am I in the Compatibility Test again...?"
"It’s not a compatibility test."
A familiar voice answered him.
"We’re in an anomaly dungeon."
June turned toward the voice. Mr. Ken stood several meters away with one hand shielding his eyes as he peered through the fierce snowfall, searching for any clue or landmark hidden within the storm.
June coughed lightly and looked around. Nyx was beside him, slowly pushing himself to his feet. Only then did June notice three other figures nearby.
Simon and Finn were standing together while Ryan brushed the snow clinging to his clothes.
June scoffed as he recalled the chain of people who had been dragged into the portal.
"I guess that happened..."
Nyx extended a hand toward him. June accepted it, allowing Nyx to pull him to his feet. The two of them stood alongside the others, silently taking in the strange surroundings.
"Where the hell are we?" Ryan adjusted his glasses as he looked around. "Is this really an anomaly dungeon? But then how are we even inside one? Aren’t they supposed to be almost impossible to enter? And doesn’t this mean we’re all going to die? They’re said to kill people regardless of rank."
Ryan’s questions came one after another without pause.
Mr. Ken adjusted his own glasses before pulling out a small pin-like device. He crouched and inserted it into the snow, allowing it to scan the surrounding area.
"And that’s exactly why it’s called an anomaly dungeon," he replied. "You can’t predict what it does."
He looked into the distance as powerful gusts swept curtains of snow across the frozen landscape.
"You can’t predict who it drags inside, who it kills, or even how it kills them. Everything about it is unpredictable."
Ryan stared at him.
"So... we really are dying?"
Simon had also knelt beside the snow, running his fingers across its surface while attempting to sense the surrounding energy.
"I can’t detect anything at all," he said with a frown. "It’s like there’s no mana here whatsoever." He glanced back at Mr. Ken. "Are you sure this is really an anomaly dungeon?"
Mr. Ken smiled as he stood up.
"It’s almost impossible to sense energy inside one."
He turned toward the group.
"I suppose this is everyone else’s first time entering an anomaly dungeon."
He paused when his eyes landed on June and Nyx, who simply stared back at him.
"Oh. You two have actually been inside one before."
He sighed before continuing.
"Even so, you’re probably still unfamiliar with how they work. In simple terms, an anomaly dungeon is completely abnormal, so don’t expect normal rules to apply in here."
"Something abnormal... like that?" Ryan asked, slowly raising a finger toward the distance.
Everyone turned to follow where he was pointing.
Something was flying through the snowstorm.
"Is that... a bird?" June asked, speechless.
"I think it’s a fish...?"
"Why is it smiling...?"
"What the hell is that?" June demanded in panic.
Several creatures glided through the icy winds overhead.
They were nothing like ordinary birds.
Each one had the body of a fish covered in white and blue scales, with enormous blue feathered wings carrying it through the sky. Their tails were almost as large as their wings, flapping in rhythm as they flew. Worst of all were their faces. Instead of fish mouths, they possessed rows of unnervingly human teeth stretched into permanent smiles as they drifted past.
"Let’s get out of here before I start having nightmares."
June immediately grabbed onto Nyx’s arm and hid partly behind him. Reading about creatures like this in manhwas was one thing. Seeing them in real life was an entirely different matter.
"We should at least figure out where we’re going," Ryan suggested as he scanned the white horizon. "Maybe we can find a way through."
Finn quietly closed his eyes and extended his mental guiding senses, attempting to locate a route through the endless storm.
Nothing.
He couldn’t sense a single thing.
Simon looked at him.
"Did you find anything?"
Finn slowly shook his head.
"Nothing. Maybe it’s because my rank is too low. I can’t be of much help... I’m sorry."
"It’s okay," Simon replied. "It’s not your fault."
June resisted the urge to snap.
This was hardly the time for another low-rank pity party.
Rolling his eyes, he spoke instead.
"It has nothing to do with rank. An anomaly dungeon can weaken people’s abilities or make itself impossible to read, unlike normal dungeons."
He continued while studying the surroundings.
"And judging from what I’ve seen so far, this could be an A-Rank or even an S-Rank anomaly dungeon... or maybe something lower. Honestly, I can’t tell."
Ryan let out a long sigh.
"Dying in an anomaly dungeon definitely wasn’t part of my life plan."
"Let’s keep moving," Mr. Ken suggested. "Standing around here won’t accomplish anything. We might find something if we keep going."
Everyone nodded.
Together, they began marching through the snow, shielding their faces from the relentless winds as flurries of snow whipped against their skin.
As they walked, Mr. Ken began explaining what they should do to prepare.
They couldn’t create a map because the dungeon itself refused to allow it. Neither could they read the surrounding mana or trace any safe path. It was obvious the dungeon was actively interfering with every attempt to analyze it.
Because of that, Mr. Ken advised everyone to gather whatever weapons they had available and conserve as much strength as possible. They needed to stay warm and save their energy for whatever lay ahead.
"We have no idea what might come for us next... or what we might end up seeing," he said as he pulled out a collapsible baton that served as his weapon.
Simon reached into his storage and retrieved something for defense. Finn did the same, followed by Ryan.
Even Nyx searched through his belongings and produced a weapon he had brought along for emergencies.
Mr. Ken nodded approvingly.
"Good. It’s reassuring that everyone has something."
He then turned toward June.
"June, what did you bring?"
Ryan looked over curiously, prompting everyone else to turn toward him as well.
"..." June blinked at the group.
"Eh..."
He awkwardly reached into his pocket, rummaged around for a moment, then slowly pulled out his phone.
"This...?"
