Chapter 60: 60: FISH BIRDS...?

"....."

The sound of the howling wind sweeping through the snowy landscape filled the silence as everyone stared at June.

June cleared his throat and casually slipped his phone back into his pocket.

"Anyways..."

He looked at them with an awkward smile.

"Anyways... let’s keep moving," Mr. Ken said, taking the lead once again.

The group continued marching through the snow. The walk felt endless, and every now and then they tried mapping the terrain, only to fail. Mr. Ken also attempted to read the surrounding atmosphere several more times, but each attempt ended the same way. The dungeon refused to reveal anything.

As they walked, June glanced toward Mr. Ken.

"So... have you actually been inside an anomaly dungeon before?"

Mr. Ken smiled.

"Well, yes. I used to work alongside several research organizations, so I’ve entered a few anomaly dungeons for research purposes."

"Oh." June nodded thoughtfully. "So they were S-Rank anomaly dungeons, right?"

"Not exactly." Mr. Ken chuckled. "The highest-ranked anomaly dungeon I’ve ever entered was only a C-Rank."

"..."

June was speechless.

For a moment, he had genuinely believed Mr. Ken would be the one to lead them safely through this place since he already had experience with anomaly dungeons.

But this was his first time dealing with a high-ranking anomaly dungeon too?

"Oh..." June nodded slowly. "I guess being a high-ranking Esper doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve entered high-level dungeons."

Mr. Ken looked at him in confusion.

"But I’m a Guide."

"..."

June blinked.

"Huh?"

Ryan laughed.

"Seriously? You didn’t know that? How did you not know Mr. Ken was a Guide?"

June blinked again.

"Right... how did I not know?"

He searched through his memories. Had he really mistaken something that obvious?

Then again, the original comic barely talked about the academy deans. They rarely appeared outside of brief scenes, so he had probably mixed them up.

"A simple mistake," he said with an awkward smile as they continued walking.

Ryan shook his head, still amused. Then a thought crossed his mind as he looked between June and Nyx.

"But if I remember correctly, you two were trapped inside a real anomaly dungeon before, weren’t you? And somehow you actually cleared it and came back alive."

June froze.

"So what did you do back then to escape?" Ryan continued hopefully. "Maybe if you do the same thing again, we’ll all be out of here in no time."

"Eh..."

June stood awkwardly beside Nyx. The two exchanged a glance before looking back at everyone else.

Simon and Finn watched them curiously, while Mr. Ken and Ryan also waited expectantly for an answer.

"Eh..." June scratched the back of his head. The memory of that kiss flashed through his mind.

"That..."

Fortunately, Mr. Ken spoke before he could embarrass himself.

"They probably don’t know exactly what happened," he said with a smile. "It was most likely an accidental trigger. They’ll have to figure out what activated it before they can reproduce it."

"Oh..." Ryan sighed. "Then you guys should seriously think about everything that happened back then. Maybe there was some kind of trigger or special action that helped you escape. Hopefully it’ll work again, because I absolutely refuse to die here. The BL manhwa I’m reading just released thirty extra Chapters online."

June nodded with an awkward smile.

"Yeah... sure. We’ll think about it."

He glanced sideways at Nyx, who quietly looked back at him.

As they continued walking, the snowstorm gradually became fiercer. The wind howled louder, forcing them to dig their feet deeper into the thick snow with every step.

But something felt wrong.

Despite the freezing surroundings, none of them actually felt cold.

Instead, June could feel heat building inside his body. Sweat rolled down his forehead and soaked through his clothes.

"What the hell..."

He wiped the sweat from his face and frowned.

"What’s going on?"

Looking around, he realized everyone else was experiencing the same thing.

Snow still blanketed the ground, and icy winds continued raging across the landscape. By all logic, they should have been freezing.

Instead, they were getting hotter by the second.

"Is this another abnormal effect of the dungeon?" Ryan asked as he tugged at his sweat-soaked clothes.

Mr. Ken gave a small scoff.

"I suppose so."

As he looked around, his gaze suddenly shifted upward.

The strange fish-birds had returned.

They were circling directly above the group now, and amidst the sound of flapping wings, faint bursts of eerie laughter echoed from the sky.

June wiped more sweat from his forehead as he looked up.

"Why the hell are those birds back again?"

Simon stepped forward, gripping his staff.

"I don’t think they’re here to enjoy the scenery."

Everyone kept their eyes fixed on the creatures overhead.

"They’re definitely preparing to attack," Mr. Ken said calmly.

June scoffed as he wiped more sweat from his face.

"And how exactly are those tiny things supposed to attack anyo—"

Before he could finish speaking, every single bird suddenly folded its wings and shot downward like missiles.

"Back!" Mr. Ken shouted.

Everyone immediately jumped backward, weapons drawn as the creatures crashed into the snow like falling rockets.

Blue sparks exploded upon impact, scattering glittering particles into the air. A powerful shockwave rushed toward them, forcing everyone to shield their faces as the glowing dust swept past.

Moments later, the light finally faded.

When they lowered their arms, the birds were gone.

In their place stood something far larger.

Towering fish-like monsters stared back at them.

Their sleek blue-and-white bodies were covered in elegant glowing patterns, while enormous feathered wings stretched from their backs. Instead of fins, they stood on long, muscular blue legs resembling those of giant kangaroos, giving them an unsettling balance between grace and absurdity.

There were nearly twenty of them.

They flapped their wings, stamped heavily against the snow, and produced strange clicking noises from mouths lined with disturbingly human teeth.

June stared up at the grotesque creatures and let out a defeated sigh.

"Well... I guess I shouldn’t have asked that."

Simon instinctively stepped in front of the group, his staff raised.

As the strongest Esper among them, protecting everyone came naturally.

Without taking his eyes off the monsters, he asked, "What do you suggest we do, Mr. Ken? Any strategy for taking down these... weird-looking fish?"

Mr. Ken quietly studied the creatures before him. It was obvious he had never encountered anything remotely like this before, nor had he ever read about such monsters.

After a brief pause, he simply shook his head.

"I think we’ll have to play this one by ear."
