Chapter 78: 78: BETTER OPTION.

The atmosphere remained quiet as they stared at one another. After a long moment of silence, Mr. Kevin finally continued.

"I’m not formally asking for your permission. I’m simply letting you know what you need to do," he said firmly, staring at them. "He’s a special Esper who needs proper attention, and my organization has the best facilities for that."

Silence followed.

The Chancellor adjusted his glasses. "It might not be appropriate to simply hand him over like that. I mean, for an academy that prides itself on prestige, it would look suspicious. Don’t you think so?"

Their eyes met.

Mr. Kevin narrowed his eyes. "And is that a no?"

The atmosphere immediately grew tense, but Mr. Brandon, the Principal, quickly stepped in.

"No... not at all. We can’t possibly say no to you."

He smiled before adding, "Actually, what Mr. Gregory means is that it would be suspicious to simply send the kid away like that. We don’t want people talking, do we? The academy’s reputation would be at stake."

Mr. Bradford smiled.

"Rather, we have a better way out."

Mr. Kevin stared at him. "Oh? And what’s that?"

Mr. Bradford’s smile widened.

"There’ll be an upcoming dungeon examination for the students as part of their training. So instead of simply taking him, why don’t we blame his disappearance on the dungeon?"

Mr. Kevin raised an eyebrow.

"Explain."

Mr. Bradford adjusted his glasses before explaining how they could use a special dungeon insertion within the simulated dungeon and make Nyx disappear. That way, they could simply blame his disappearance on an anomaly dungeon, while Mr. Kevin could take him and do whatever he needed with him for the time being.

Mr. Kevin smiled at the idea.

"I like that... That’s smart."

He turned toward Mr. Ken, the Dean of Arcane Research, who would be responsible for handling the technical aspects.

"I hope you can make all of this happen with your skills?"

Mr. Ken wasn’t pleased. Clear signs of disgust and annoyance lingered on his face, and he desperately wanted to remove himself from the entire plot.

But once again, Mr. Yen held him back.

Mr. Ken struggled to force a smile.

"I’ll try my best."

Mr. Kevin nodded, laughing as he clapped his hands.

"Okay! Okay! That’s great. I like to see that energy."

He turned toward the others.

"With that settled, I believe this meeting can come to an end."

He smiled as he looked at the Chancellor and Principal.

"Remember everything we discussed here. And make sure you keep your word. Anything contrary to what we discussed wouldn’t be too funny."

It was a threat.

Mr. Bradford simply smiled and nodded.

"For sure... We will."

The meeting was over, and everyone dispersed, heading in different directions.

Mr. Ken stormed out of the meeting room, making his way furiously through the hallways with his arms crossed. He scoffed and rolled his eyes, clearly disgusted by everything he had just witnessed.

Mr. Yen followed after him, hurrying until he finally caught his hand and stopped him.

"What?"

"Are you mad?"

"No."

"You’re mad."

"I’m not."

"You’re always red when you’re mad."

"..."

Mr. Ken rolled his eyes.

"I mean, isn’t it disgusting? He might be the Minister or whatever, but... they’re just kids." He struggled to find the right words.

Mr. Yen sighed, rubbing his forehead.

"I understand you, but... can we just avoid crossing his path? You and I both know he isn’t much of a... good person. So..."

"You’re saying I should play along and create a way for him to kidnap some kid and turn him into a lab rat?" Mr. Ken scoffed. "Well, that doesn’t exist in my ethical dictionary. So you can bet I’m not playing along."

"I’m not saying that... I..." Mr. Yen ran a hand through his hair, struggling for words. "This... I don’t even know what to do. Just don’t get yourself into trouble. I’d be worried."

Mr. Ken glared at him.

"Well, you don’t need to be. Honestly, even if he expels me from this academy, I won’t dance to his nasty tunes."

"You’re just being stubborn, you..."

"Then I’ll be stubborn."

He folded his arms defiantly.

Ahead of them were Mr. Drax, the Dean of Esper Studies, Mr. Ethan, and Mrs. Mizz Lizzy, the Dean of Guide Studies, all coming out of the meeting room.

Mr. Ken’s gaze landed on them. He watched as Mrs. Lizzy locked her arms around Mr. Drax, becoming unusually clingy toward him.

"You should listen to me..." Mr. Yen said.

"Sorry, I just remembered I’m busy. I’ll be leaving."

Mr. Ken turned and walked away.

"Ken!" Mr. Yen called after him, quickly following.

Nyx was finally discharged from the hospital after a couple of days.

June was worried, knowing that Nyx was heading back to his parents’ home. Unlike most students, he didn’t stay in the academy’s hostels.

"Are you sure you want to go back? You can stay in the hospital for a few more days. I’ll pay," June insisted.

But Nyx shook his head, reassuring him.

"Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. I won the test, so I’ll be alright."

He sounded confident, but June couldn’t help worrying.

Nyx eventually left for his house, while June returned home for a day’s break before resuming academy.

The moment he arrived home that evening, the sound of a confetti cannon exploding filled the room.

As expected, his parents were waiting for him, excitedly celebrating.

"Congratulations, my boy!" Mr. En exclaimed happily as he fired another confetti cannon, while Mrs. En brought forward a cake.

June stood there, completely covered in confetti, staring at the decorations covering the sitting room.

They had clearly been made in his honor.

The biggest one read:

CONGRATULATIONS ON FINDING A PARTNER!

"Congratulations!" Mrs. En exclaimed dramatically. "I was so worried that no one would ever want to be friends with you... but I guess you even found a partner now!"

She said it as though he had just gotten engaged.

June stared at the cake, then at the decorations, and finally at his two brothers, who stood beside their parents with their arms folded, silently staring at him.

June sighed.

All he could hope was that his parents hadn’t bought the top-trending search results again just to celebrate their friendless son finally getting a partner.
