Chapter 79: 79: WORRIED.

June finally excused himself from his parents’ celebration by faking a headache and stomachache. He only managed a few bites of cake and dinner before fleeing to his room.

He soaked in a long bath, letting the warmth soothe his entire body. As he relaxed in the tub, he couldn’t help but think about Nyx.

He thought about Nyx’s past and the fact that he was probably back home by now, dealing with his awful parents.

"I wonder how he’s doing now... Is he okay?" June bit his lower lip as he stared into thin air. "Should I call him... or text him?"

He picked up his phone and accepted Nyx’s friend request. For a while, he stared at Nyx’s painfully bland social media account.

No profile picture. No posts. Nothing.

He stared at the screen for a moment, typing and deleting messages several times before finally sending something.

[How are you doing?]

June placed his phone aside and continued bathing.

Once he was done, he wrapped himself in his white robe and made his way into his bedroom, only to freeze when he saw his two brothers inside.

Lucas was going through the jewelry collection displayed in his room, while Grey leaned against the wall, watching June step out of the bathroom.

"..."

June blinked before hugging himself.

"You two... What are you doing in my room?"

He guessed he had forgotten to lock the damn door.

The two brothers turned toward him.

"Why? Can’t we visit our little brother anymore?" Lucas asked, folding his arms.

June scoffed.

"Like you cared. You probably care more about the endless contracts you have to sign at the company."

Grey smiled.

"Be nicer to your brother. He came all the way home just to celebrate with you."

June stared at him.

"I’m sure he’s back to give me another earful about why I shouldn’t negatively impact his company with scandals."

Grey shook his head with a smile, while Lucas raised an eyebrow, his cold expression remaining unreadable.

"We’re just worried," Grey said, folding his arms as he approached. "Worried about our little brother suddenly gaining the ability to enter and survive an anomaly dungeon twice."

He stopped in front of June, towering over him.

"And we’re worried about how our little brother managed to make several grown-ass men get down on their knees."

"..."

June blinked. He stared at Grey, then at Lucas.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

Lucas cleared his throat.

"Are you really still an F-Rank?"

"Clearly. Why?"

"An F-Ranker doesn’t enter anomaly dungeons or manipulate people like that. So tell us. What’s really happening?"

"..."

June blinked.

He guessed Grey and Lucas had already discussed this between themselves.

He smiled and shrugged.

"Nothing. I guess things just happened that way. It’s nothing much."

He folded his arms as he walked toward his bed and sat down.

Lucas’s expression remained cold and firm as he stared at him.

"Things don’t just happen like that. And you should be old enough to understand the consequences."

June met his gaze.

"I know the consequences of existing in this world. I know more than you do, so you don’t need to lecture me."

Their eyes clashed, cold and firm, as tension filled the room.

Grey glanced between them.

"Oh... Let’s not get tense now."

He tapped Lucas lightly on the shoulder.

"He’s still young, so speak kindly to him."

"Until when?" Lucas snapped. "Spoiling him this much isn’t bad enough? How much further does he have to be spoiled? Until he finally gets himself into serious trouble? He should know this isn’t some playground."

To some extent, June couldn’t blame Lucas for getting angry.

The original June had been insufferable and spoiled enough to deserve a good spanking.

Grey patted Lucas’s shoulder.

"Calm down... Okay?"

Lucas looked at June.

"Fine. I’ll speak to him in a language he understands better."

He pointed toward June.

"I’ll give you two options. Either stay far away from that Esper, or withdraw from that academy. And that’s final."

With that, he turned and left the room.

June blinked as he watched him disappear.

The June from a few days ago would have been thrilled by that request and happily dropped out without a second thought.

But now, if he left the academy, who would protect Nyx?

He needed to stay close to him.

The atmosphere remained tense even after Lucas left. Grey sighed before turning toward June.

"He learned about everything that happened and came home. You should know Lucas by now. He’s cold and straightforward with his demands, and he doesn’t compromise easily. But you should also know that he’s worried about you."

There was a brief silence before Grey continued.

"He didn’t have a problem with you being in the academy because he believed you’d live a normal life without getting involved with powers or authorities as an F-Rank."

He sighed.

"As a matter of fact, you being an F-Rank made me happy. It meant you wouldn’t get dragged into the complicated world and troubles of Espers and Guides."

Grey shook his head.

"So hearing about all this really worked him up. He even canceled an important business trip just to come here."

He stared at June.

"He’s worried about you, even though he won’t say it. You should know about his past... So I hope you understand."

June knew.

Even though Lucas’s past wasn’t properly explored in the comic, June knew what had happened.

Lucas had once been one of the best Espers in his organization before a clash with the government forced him into retirement.

It had been a bloody conflict that had nearly cost him his life. Afterward, he withdrew completely and took over the family business.

It was no secret that Lucas now hated the organizations and would never recommend that his siblings get involved with them. Since he couldn’t stop Grey, he had hoped he could at least keep June away from that world.

But June guessed he couldn’t anymore.

June smiled at Grey.

"Don’t worry. I understand him. And I know he’s just worried about me."

"..."

Grey stared at him in surprise.

The original June had never understood.

He had always been too busy throwing bratty tantrums to even try.

June sighed.

"Maybe when I’m free, I’ll speak with him and assure him that I’ll be fine," he promised. "Thanks for worrying about me."

Grey’s eyes widened slightly.

Was this still June? It couldn’t be.

The June he knew would never try to understand anyone, let alone take something like this seriously.

He was genuinely scared.

"What? Why’s your face like that?" June asked, watching his expression.

Grey quickly shook his head. "Nothing. I’m... I’ll be leaving, then."

He turned and hurried out of the room, leaving June to enjoy the rest of his night.
