Chapter 81: 81: SLEEP AWAY.

June raised an eyebrow. "Huh?"

"You heard me right." Mr. Bradford cleared his throat as he stared through the files. "So you should go and get ready for it. And..." He looked up at him. "Tell Mr. Faux about it. Since there are five of them, you can get three more people to join you to make it fair. That should be all, right?"

June was speechless, still processing everything he had just heard. He had to compete with the rumored invincible Elite 5 in some fancy, high-class academy dungeon?!

How did any of this make sense?!

"But we’re only F-Rank juniors." June tilted his head. "Does it make sense that we’re going against S-Rank seniors? Or are you perhaps setting us up for something?" June could read the atmosphere.

Mr. Bradford stared at him, maintaining his firm expression as he smiled. "You’re overthinking it. F-Ranks who can clear an anomaly dungeon... That certainly calls for higher challenges."

"So we’re test subjects now?" June folded his arms. "Setting us up with different groups to study how long we can survive?"

Mr. Bradford tried not to frown, even though June’s nerves were beginning to get on his nerves. "Like I said, this is a reward as promised. Being on that stage with your seniors is a rare opportunity. Embrace it." He paused. "And of course, it’s part of your training. You’ll learn a lot from your seniors if you take it seriously."

June said nothing. He stood there with his arms folded, staring at Mr. Bradford. He could tell this was part of their little experimental schemes.

"And what if we don’t want to play along? Then what?"

Silence filled the room in a short while.

Mr. Bradford stared at him with a more serious expression. "I don’t have time to waste with you. Go and get ready and prepare well for the contest. The results from the competition will count as your real-time grading. So work hard."

June stared at him. There was no point wasting his time with someone who had already made up his mind to plot behind his back. It was pretty obvious.

Instead, he should find a way out of this mess himself.

He smiled. "Okay. I’ll work hard not to disappoint you."

He turned and headed for the door, but stopped just before leaving. He glanced back at Mr. Bradford.

"And... you definitely should change shampoos. This current one will certainly leave you bald soon. And try to accumulate some merits by doing some good. It’ll reduce the wrinkles from appearing faster."

He smiled before turning and walking off, leaving Mr. Bradford sitting there, staring after him.

Once June was gone, Mr. Bradford slowly raised a hand to feel his hair, then his face. He blinked and swallowed before pulling out his mirror to take a better look, touching his cheeks.

"But I use the latest one..."

---

June made his way back to his room that evening, wondering what possible plan the authorities could be plotting.

They couldn’t possibly claim to see potential in them and genuinely want to elevate them into a higher status. It was impossible that they had suddenly decided they were important enough to compete with the academy’s elite members.

It was definitely a plan to sabotage them.

And June was certain of it.

As soon as he entered the hostel room, Ryan quickly walked up to him, grabbed him, and pulled him down into a seat at the study table.

"What?" June asked, looking back at Ryan as he massaged his shoulders. "What’s it?"

"Spill. Now. What did the white-haired man tell you?" he demanded.

June sighed as he stared at the table. "Nothing much. He just set me up for a competition with the Elite 5."

"..."

Ryan’s jaw dropped. His glasses nearly slipped off his face, and he quickly held them in place.

"What?! You’re joking, right?"

June sighed and turned toward him. "You heard that right. I guess I’m going to meet the so-called Elite 5. And not only meet them, I’ll have a showdown with them."

"..."

Ryan was still speechless, barely recovering from the shock. He could only stand there and listen as June narrated everything that had happened.

"So... I guess that’s my fate soon." June sighed.

Ryan blinked before gently patting June’s shoulder and shaking his head sympathetically.

"There’s always light at the end of the tunnel... so hold on there, dear friend."

June folded his arms. "I certainly won’t be playing along with his little tricks. I’m certain it’s part of their plan. I’m too lazy to give them that satisfaction."

Ryan adjusted his glasses. "So what do you plan on doing then? Drop out of school or something?"

"I wish." June sighed and leaned back. "I’ll only have to sleep my way out of it."

"Sleep your way out of it?"

June blinked. "You’ll just have to sit down and see."

Ryan nodded. "I wish you the best. Those five rich brats aren’t that easy to deal with at all. I heard they can make you drop out if they want."

June sighed and rolled his eyes as Ryan continued massaging his shoulders.

"But don’t worry. Before you start worrying about your impending doom, we can first go and relax at the upcoming school party."

June stared at him. "School party? What’s that?"

Ryan shook his head. "You... I can’t believe you’re not aware of the upcoming party this weekend."

June blinked, surprised. He guessed he had been too nonchalant about the affairs of the academy to even know a party was coming.

He didn’t even join any official groups or anything.

"It’s like a welcome party for the freshmen hosted by the school. I heard it’s usually a grand one, so I don’t think it’s something to miss."

June simply listened, trying to remember whether such an event had happened in the original timeline of the comic.

It had. And it was a vital turning point in Simon and Finn’s love dynamic.
