Chapter 91 — The Price of Strength

Monkbala stared at Victor, waiting for him to step onto the platform.

Victor looked toward Monkasa.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Monkasa slowly shook his head.

There wasn’t much he could do.

Victor understood.

There was only one thing left for him to do.

He had to face this.

Victor took a breath and stepped onto the wooden platform.

Monkbala watched him approach.

"At least you didn’t run away."

Victor said nothing.

Monkbala bowed.

Victor reciprocated.

The moment they straightened, Monkbala’s entire body changed.

His stance resembled Monkasa’s, but there was a refinement to it that Victor had never seen before.

His movements were cleaner.

More deliberate.

Even before the technique was activated, the pressure radiating from him was immense.

Victor’s expression became serious.

Then Monkbala moved.

Step.

Step.

Step.

His feet followed the strange rhythm of the Monkey Fist.

Spiritual Energy began gathering around his body.

Victor’s eyes widened.

The energy surrounding Monkbala’s fist was nearly three times larger than what Monkasa had demonstrated.

But that wasn’t the only difference.

The Spiritual Energy constantly changed color.

Purple.

Red.

The two colors intertwined around his fist, and tiny sparks of what looked almost like lightning crackled through the swirling energy.

Victor stared.

That’s the Monkey Fist?

He immediately understood.

Monkbala’s Spiritual Core was at Rank 10.

And there was only one reason his Monkey Fist could possess this much power.

Intermediate.

He had already reached the second stage of the technique.

That explained his ranking.

Rank forty-five.

Victor’s thoughts raced through his mind in the blink of an eye.

Then Monkbala disappeared.

Victor’s eyes widened.

Monkbala appeared directly in front of him.

The Monkey Fist slammed into Victor’s stomach.

Victor tried to block.

He couldn’t.

His body reacted on instinct.

Flash Step activated at the last possible moment.

Victor’s body shifted away from the center of the attack, avoiding a large portion of the force.

But it wasn’t enough.

The remaining impact struck him with terrifying power.

BOOM!

Victor’s body was launched into the air.

He flew nearly fifteen feet backward, twisting and flipping through the air before crashing onto the wooden platform.

He rolled several times.

Then stopped.

Blood immediately poured from his mouth.

Victor coughed violently.

That bastard...

He barely had time to recover.

Monkbala vanished again.

Victor’s instincts screamed.

He rolled.

A fist slammed into the platform where his head had been.

Victor spun and flipped away, using his hands against the ground to propel himself back onto his feet.

He wasn’t going to take everything lying down.

Victor activated Flash Step.

His body flashed forward.

He dropped low and swept his leg toward Monkbala’s feet.

Monkbala jumped.

Victor’s eyes widened.

His tail suddenly wrapped around Victor’s neck.

Before Victor could react, Monkbala yanked him downward.

BAM!

Victor’s head slammed into the platform.

Pain exploded through his skull.

Monkbala used the momentum to launch himself into the air.

His body spun.

He completed a front flip.

Then both feet came crashing down onto Victor’s back.

BOOM!

Victor’s body slammed into the wooden platform.

Blood escaped his mouth again.

He sprawled across the ground.

The fight was already over.

At least, it should have been.

But Monkbala wasn’t finished.

He grabbed Victor by the neck with his tail and lifted him from the ground.

Victor’s feet dangled beneath him.

Monkbala stared directly into his eyes.

There was nothing playful in his expression.

Only anger.

He pulled Victor closer.

Then his fists began moving.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Quick, precise jabs slammed into Victor’s body.

Each one sent another wave of pain through him.

Then Monkbala whipped him backward.

Victor’s body crashed into the ground.

His vision blurred.

The world around him slowly faded.

He was out cold.

Victor didn’t move.

Blood continued flowing from several wounds across his body.

Monkbala stood over him.

His chest rose and fell.

His eyes remained fixed on the unconscious Victor.

Then his hand began moving.

Spiritual Energy gathered around his fist.

The tornado appeared.

It spun faster and faster.

Monkbala slowly walked toward Victor.

He was going to finish it.

"Monkbala!"

Monkasa suddenly stepped onto the platform.

"It’s over! You’ve won the fight!"

Monkbala stopped.

He slowly looked toward him.

"Get out of my way."

Monkasa didn’t move.

"No."

His expression hardened.

"We’re not allowed to kill humans."

Monkbala’s eyes narrowed.

"That’s against our culture, just as much as what happened to your sister."

Monkasa took another step forward.

"So back off."

Monkbala remained silent.

For several seconds, he stared at Monkasa.

Then his eyes moved toward Victor.

The anger inside him slowly began to settle.

The Spiritual Energy surrounding his fist dispersed.

Monkbala looked at Monkasa one final time.

Then he turned around and walked away.

Monkasa waited for a moment.

He looked down at Victor.

The female Lava Rock Monkey who had treated them after their previous fight soon arrived with her supplies.

She immediately began tending to Victor.

His injuries were far worse this time.

For nearly twenty-five minutes, she worked without stopping.

By the time she finished, Victor was completely covered in bandages.

Monkasa carefully lifted Victor over his shoulder.

The unconscious human hung limply against his back.

Monkasa carried him through the village and back to his house.

He lowered Victor into the hammock and made sure he was positioned comfortably.

Then he stood there for a moment.

His eyes remained on Victor.

Finally, Monkasa turned and left.

The moment he stepped outside, the familiar smile that normally covered his face was gone.

There was no large, toothy grin.

No carefree expression.

His eyes were focused.

Serious.

Monkasa walked through the village alone.

His fists slowly tightened.

I was too weak.

If Monkbala had decided to ignore him and continue forward, Monkasa knew there was nothing he could have done.

He couldn’t have stopped him.

He couldn’t have protected Victor.

And that realization hurt more than anything.

Monkasa stopped walking.

He looked toward the training grounds.

He needed to become stronger.

Not simply because he enjoyed fighting.

Not simply because he loved the thrill of battle.

He needed strength to protect the people he cared about.

He needed to keep moving forward.

To keep climbing.

Until one day, no one would be able to stand in his way.

This day would mark the beginning of something new for Monkasa.

Before today, he had fought because he loved fighting.

Now he had a reason.

A reason to reach the pinnacle of the cultivation world.

Monkasa turned toward the training grounds.

Then he walked.

He didn’t stop.

The moment he arrived, he began practicing the Monkey Fist.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Again.

And again.

Monkasa continued practicing with a newfound obsession.

This time, he wasn’t fighting for fun.

He was fighting for strength.

And he would become stronger.
