Blood Queen Reborn

The plant beast that swallowed Vorden wasn’t the only one on the mountain as more and more beasts woke up while the rain continued to fall. Students were getting swallowed while others were fighting them. Despite being ground beasts, they were nimble like a snake, making them troublesome to deal with.

Quinn grabbed the others, and yanked them out of where they last saw Vorden. They knew they couldn’t stick around for long as there were beasts everywhere.

Despite being swift, the other students fought them off, using everything in their disposal. While they outnumbered them, all it took was one wrong move for the beasts to swallow them whole.

"Come to me to get your weapons boosted!" Del shouted, and just like earlier, they were running to him. Thanks to his shield, he blocked their bites, protecting the students.

One of the purple plant beasts charged at the pink haired student, and she screamed, closing her eyes. Except, instead of death, she opened them, and saw it get punched away by Quinn.

"You— You saved me!" She stammered out.

Quinn got in front of her, and held his earth gauntlets in a defensive pose, "It’s not dead yet."

The beast snapped its jaw towards him, and he punched it back. As it recoiled, it swerved its head at him again, but right when he was about to block with an earth wall, it stopped a foot away from him. If you looked at its back at just the right angle, you could see a string holding it back.

"Don’t worry, it’s leashed, it wont bite," Fex joked, but no one laughed.

While it was still trying to get to him, Quinn shoved an earth spike right under its body, impaling it into the air.

The two boys weren’t the only ones fighting back. Due to the fact that Erin had her king tier bow, Layla didn’t want to use her special arrows just yet, but that didn’t mean she lacked options.

Pressing the notch of an arrow against her burnscale ring, she ignited the head, and fired it. It wedged itself into a beast, and engulfed in flames despite the downpour. This specific beast gear was perfect against plant type creatures, and wouldn’t get extinguished by normal rain.

’What are those three buffoons doing?’ Del thought, ’At least they’re risking their lives to save students instead of me.

Quinn and Fex were going around, trying to help the students about to get eaten. The two boys had just helped out another student when another purple beast popped up right under their feet, and swiped its large body into the two boys. They fell to the ground, its maw wide open to swallow them, when another burning arrow shot into its side, and it writhed, unable to put itself out.

To ensure it wouldn’t come back, Fex jumped up high and slammed his foot into its head, crushing it.

"Where would you two be without me?" Layla joked, as she started to climb a boulder for a better view.

Unfortunately, Peter was struggling against the purple beasts. He was only a level 2 earth ability user, and doing his best to protect Cia. They were able to have a rhythm where she threw a spirit spear into one of the beasts, weakening it, and Peter would thwack it away with a spiked earth staff, but he couldn’t finish them off.

If she was fast enough, then it was possible that she could throw two spears into them, weakening them even more, but the beasts outmatched her speed.

"We’re getting cornered!" Cia shouted, "Kill them already!"

"I’m trying!" Peter shouted back, "But these guys are blurs to me!"

The two were on the back foot, retreating up to the mountain wall, and surrounded at all sides.

At what felt like the last second, a knife on a string bounced off of one of the beasts, and it turned around towards Fex.

"Seriously?" Fex yanked the knife back, "I should’ve known beast gear wasn’t reliable."

To ensure that Peter and Cia didn’t get hurt, he fired several of his strings into the beasts, holding them back.

Layla, from afar, shot several burning arrows into the beasts, slowly killing them. Quinn impaled the ones she missed with earth spikes under them. With the last remaining few, Fex ran circles around the beasts, wrapping his strings around them, until their bodies were sufficiently crushed.

Their team wasn’t the only one getting rid of the beasts, as the class was able to push back against them. It was starting to look more hopeful as the students utilized their abilities and weaponry.

It had gotten to a point where it seemed like there weren’t anymore beasts, at least, none that could reach them.

"Those students saved my life!" A kid said happily, "Unlike our teacher here. What did you even do? They did all the hard work."

Del glared at the younger person, "I held the line and shielded you all from danger!"

While the students were arguing with the teacher, Peter called out to Quinn. He could recognize his friend anywhere.

"Peter, are you okay?" Quinn ran over, and he noticed that his friend’s face was bare, "What happened to your glasses?"

Absentmindedly scratching the side of his face, Peter just said, "It’s a long story but—"

Right next to the boulder Layla was on, a droplet of water landed on a short blade of grass, previously sheltered by the rock from the rain. It vibrated, then shot up in the air.

From the corner of his eye, Quinn saw the beast’s jaw snap open around Layla. He was too far away to reach her.

She was able to see the danger surround her, but despite her improved senses, Layla wasn’t fast enough to escape it. The beast had left nothing of the girl behind.

Running over to the spot where she was swallowed, Quinn created an earth spear and stabbed into the earth to get at the beast. In his mind, he was hoping to be able to dig it up.

"Quinn!" Peter screamed, before he saw him get swallowed up by the same beast.

Peter was about to chase after him, but Cia pulled him back, "You’ll only get eaten if you try to—"

Another plant beast opened up right below them before she could finish her sentence, and they were gone just like that.

This had left Fex as the last man standing.

"Whelp, I gotta go after them," he said as he ran off to a straggler purple beast, and allowed himself to get swallowed whole.

The students who had made it to Del’s side were safe, as he did most of the blocking with his shield, and those with beast weapons had them boosted to hold the line. They wouldn’t need to hold the position for long as the rain started to stop, almost abruptly with how quick it happened, and the beasts returned back into the ground.

The dirt formed around where the purple grasses stood, it was as if there hadn’t been a massive struggle for people’s lives just moments prior.

A student panted, feeling like he might collapse, and cautiously looked around, "Is it over? Actually over?"

"I think so?" Del replied, "I think these beasts reacted to the rain. They seemed to appear and disappear at the same time as the rain appeared and vanished... Luckily for us, in a place like this, the downpour might be strong, but it doesn’t last long. However, we don’t know when the next downpour will be."

"What should we do now? And what about the others?" A student said, watching the grass.

From his studies, Del knew that it wasn’t common for plant-type beasts to be carnivores, and that the ones they just encountered likely didn’t have the stomach acid required to consume meat. At least, that was what he deduced when he looked inside of their mouths. It looked to be more like dark pits than something that chewed. Chances were, the students that were eaten could still be alive.

"I hate to say this, but they’re probably already dead," Del lied "It’s best if we head back down to where we were. If we carry on going upwards then there might be even more dangerous beasts."

The students groaned at his choice, as a few of them tried telling him this earlier. Still, he was their teacher, and they followed him back down the mountain.

"Where did that one boy go? The one with the earth gauntlets?" A student asked her friend, "I wanted to thank him, but..."

"I was going to do the same for a girl I saw with a bow," another said, "But I think they were killed trying to save us."

The class walked in silence, thinking about the people who tried to help them, only to fall to danger themselves.

Unbeknownst to them, they were still alive, but perhaps not for long.
