Cia and Peter ran for their lives out towards one of the exits of the underground town. Right as they were about to enter one of the tunnels, a grotesque looking dog stepped out behind a large rock, and snapped its uncanny jaw towards them.
"Eeek!" Cia squeaked out, and instinctively threw a spirit spear.
It landed, and Peter quickly formed a crude earth staff, and smacked it into the monster. It flew to the side, and they ran past it.
They chose one of the tunnels at random, just hoping to be out of harm’s way. Peter turned around to see if there were any more beasts following them, when he tripped on the uneven ground.
"Ack!"
Cia turned around, and lifted him up to his feet, but before they could run again, a bright light blinded them.
"AAAAA! We’re going to die!" Cia yelled, squinting her eyes.
"Oh my, there’s kids here!" a woman’s voice said.
Their vision adjusted for the brightness, and they saw a group of 5 travelers wearing sticky patches on their armor that illuminated the area. Cia and Peter recognized them as the travelers from when they first arrived.
"Woah, what happened to you two? It looks like you’d seen a ghost," A bald headed man said.
"They must’ve encountered the beast from the tunnels. It’s a miracle they’re still alive," the woman said to the bald man.
Then a young looking man with wavy hair tied in a pony tail stepped forward, "Hey, you two are from the military base, right? My name is Andre, I’m the leader of this group. Did you guys get attacked?"
Peter shook his head, "No, but we saw this dangerous beast and—"
"And we were separated from our team—" Cia quickly said, "They’re not in the cave, it’s just us two. We fell down a river and have been trying to get back to our class ever since, but ended up here."
Cia shuddered, "I got eaten by a purple beast, and spat out underground."
"Well, what do we do?" An older looking man said, wearing a sword and shield on his back, "We were about to head into the caves ourselves, but it would be hard to protect them, and attack at the same time."
"Please take us back!" Cia pleaded, "This place is awful!"
Andre placed a hand on his chin, "Well, we could always come back later, these kids are our first priority."
Cia and Peter let out a sigh of relief, Peter especially as he was hoping they wouldn’t go in and see his friends do vampire things.
"I’m sure you two had a long trek before you met us, so how about this," Andre said, then stepped to the side.
Immediately, Cia and Peter jumped back, startled by the sight of a beast. However, the travelers didn’t look worried at all.
"Don’t worry, he’s friendly," Andre said as he petted its head.
It looked a lot like a lion, the same size as one too, but its muscles were more clearly defined. Not only that, but it had three tails with flames on the ends of them. The beast rubbed its head on Andre’s side affectionately.
Cia tilted her head, and held her hand out, "Aww, it’s kinda cute."
"His name is Cookie," Andre said, then gestured for the two to get on him.
Peter’s eyes widened, "Wait, if he’s tamed, then are you—?!"
The woman smiled, "That would be because he’s part of the Big Four families, the Bree."
Peter was amazed that he was interacting with a member of such an important family, but Cia didn’t look too impressed, she was too busy petting Cookie.
The group headed out of the tunnels, with Cia and Peter riding on Cookie. Eventually, they made it outside, and were greeted with a lively bright green jungle.
"I never thought I’d be happy to see the color green again!" Cia exclaimed.
Peter squinted his eyes, noticing a vaguely familiar figure through his blurry vision.
"It appears that you found the missing students before I did," Leo said.
"Glad to be of help," Andre nodded his head, "It’s not every day you get to save some lives."
Leo paid a little closer attention to the mountain, but didn’t think much further about it. In his mind, he had no reason to believe there were any other students in danger as Del’s class was already on their way back to the shelter, and Cia and Peter were the only two missing students reported.
On their way, the travelers decided to walk with Leo and the students to make sure they returned back safely. The moment the shelter came into view, Cia sighed wistfully, "I can finally take a nice long hot shower."
Leo paused, then responded, "That may be an issue. This kind of shelter does not have the infrastructure for heated plumbing."
At the sound of bad news, Cia let out a quiet whine.
"Don’t cry, Cia, I’m sure they have baths," Peter responded.
"About that," Andre said, "I haven’t been here long, but I know they don’t even have plumbing yet."
Cia frowned deeply, and pinched the bridge of her nose, "How about we all stop talking for a bit."
—
On the top floor of the tower, there was a large ornate throne slightly elevated from the rest of the room. There were also multi-ringed grooves on the floor with an abstract pattern on them. The outer ring moved to the left with a click, then the inner ring moved to the right with another click. The rings would constantly shift to the right, and left multiple times, until it stopped, completing the pattern like a puzzle.
Once it did, the center circle rose up from the ground, lifting a casket along with it. The door opened, and out stepped a man with pale white skin, long black hair, and a soft feminine face. You could see his clearly defined muscles as this man wasn’t wearing any clothes.
The casket returned to the floor, and the figure flexed his fingers, then swayed his arms, and cracked his neck.
"Now what could I have been woken up for?" The man said, "I wonder how long my slumber has been?"
He opened his eyes, red glowing from them, and saw the Likmorn beast enter the room he was in. It kneeled in front of him, taking him back to the days when he was the active leader of this settlement.
"Ah, so it seems that something has happened to where a vampire can’t greet me," the man commented, then chuckled, "Although, it could be because I am currently not wearing any clothes. It’s a little annoying that vampire tradition dictates we have to be naked when one is to go to eternal slumber, wouldn’t you think?"
The Likmorn didn’t respond.
"Right?"
Turning around, he looked at his throne, flashes of memories coming by from times of old, then walked behind it where a display case of a finely crafted black and red sword sat with black chains wrapped around it. He held his hand up, and the weapon vibrated before breaking out of the glass, and into his grasp.
The grip was made out of a crimson colored material compared to the blade, and at the rain-guard was a dark, almost gray, crystal. On the blade was a bar of sorts, matching the same color as the crystal. It was as if it could fill up with power, but was currently lacking it
"Now, for the clothes, I’m sure I have something stored somewhere," The man commented.
Shadows formed around his feet, and up his body, clothing it in comfortable, simple attire.
"Oh? What’s this?" The man raised an eyebrow, and smiled, "Another shadow user? Now this is getting interesting."
