When they first came onto this planet, out of all the things that could’ve happened, an ancient vampire popping out of Erin’s shadow was something that they never expected. They just all stared at the man, and his glowing red eyes, unable to say anything.
"I know I’m pretty strong, but you guys are aware you can speak in my presence," the man casually said.
The group didn’t know how to respond. This was surely the ancient vampire that they were all scared of waking up, and yet, here he was, acting as if this was just another Tuesday.
"How about this, I ask a question, and you answer it," The man then turned towards the door, "Do you know what happened to this place? It could simply be that I woke up recently, but I am not sensing any other vampires around."
The room stayed silent. It wasn’t just because they didn’t know the answer, but it was also because they were scared of potentially saying the wrong thing.
"—And better yet," the man turned to Erin, who had since deactivated her shadow cloak, "You are the only one I sense with the shadow ability. Has something happened to the Punishers in my slumber?"
Erin, however, wasn’t really paying attention to the man’s words, rather, she was getting distracted by the man’s back.
The man pointed at his face and said, "My eyes are up here, young lady."
What Erin was looking at wasn’t the man’s back muscles, but rather, the large sword struggling against its chains.
[Inspect]
[??????]
Erin blinked. Was the sword just too powerful for her inspect skill to work? This kind of situation happened once before with the flora saur, but even that told her the name of the beast.
That was when Quinn turned towards Erin, and shook his head slowly.
{Quinn} Don’t even think about it.
{Erin} Don’t even think about what?
"It appears as if there isn’t a single Punisher around," the man spoke with a bitter solemness, "Aside from me and you, of course."
"You keep mentioning the ’Punishers’ as if I’m meant to understand what that means," Erin crossed her arms.
"Ah, is that so?" The man looked a little heart broken, but cleared his throat, "I am perhaps too used to people already knowing who I am. I was quite the important figure back in the day."
"My name is Arthur. Arthur Pendragon, and I am— or I should say, was, the leader of the Punishers."
{Quinn} System, do you know what this man is talking about?
"I’ll be honest," The system voice said, "I’m not quite sure of all the details myself. I knew they existed, but this is the first time I’ve heard they were wiped."
After a while of staying silent, Quinn had a question, "How were you able to get to us?"
He could’ve sworn he sealed off any holes or entrances in the building. Not only that, but the black stone was dense, dense enough for a king tier beast to not be able to make a scratch.
"That’s quite simple. I’m sure without a proper teacher around that you have not been taught the basics," Arthur noted, "A unique skill of ours is that we can travel to each other’s shadows whenever we wished. No matter the distance, it was what made us a force to be reckoned with."
The sound of that made Layla perk up. For a while now, she had been considering learning the shadow ability, and with the two of them having the same ability, they could teleport to each other whenever they wanted. It sounded like a useful skill to have.
"As for you," Arthur returned his gaze to Erin, "I can feel your eyes bore into my sword, and it appears that you wield a sword yourself."
Erin nodded, and stated bluntly, "I want that sword. Can I have that sword?"
Immediately, Fex grimaced. Even though he wasn’t a stickler for rules, he knew better than to ask a powerful person to hand over their belongings.
At the same time, Quinn was thinking, ’Erin, this is exactly what I was fearing you were going to do!’
However, Arthur simply smiled, "This sword isn’t yours to wield, but I am sure I have another blood weapon around you may like better."
Erin frowned, "So you’re just going to give me a cheap copy?"
Arthur chuckled, "I suppose I can make an exception for a fellow Punisher. If you can land a single hit on me, I will hand you my sword. That is, of course, if you prove yourself as a Punisher."
"Sure, whatever, I’m a Punisher," Erin said nonchalantly, "Now give me that sword!"
"Eager are you? How about we take this outside as to give you the best fighting chance?"
"Gladly."
They left the building, and out into the streets of the town. There, the others stood to the side, making space for Erin and Arthur to have their duel.
Erin took out her sword, and readied herself into a fighting stance.
"Do you think that Erin will actually win?" Layla whispered to Quinn.
Quinn bit his lip. The system hadn’t given Erin a single quest message about defeating Arthur, which made him doubt it was possible, but that could be because the two hadn’t initiated combat just yet.
"I don’t want to give a definitive answer," Quinn eventually said.
Arthur pointed to Fex, "You, young man, count us down from 5."
With a nervous smile, Fex raised his hand, and lowered a finger for every second.
"5... 4... 3... 2... 1."
Immediately, Erin activated flash step, reaching over to Arthur’s side of the road, but instead of landing a hit like she expected, Arthur had completely disappeared.
She spun around, and found him standing there with a casual smile, "Is that as fast as you can go?"
’I didn’t even see him move!’ Erin thought.
Yet again, Erin flashstepped, thrusting her rapier towards him as she did, only to hit nothing but air.
She did this a few times, missing every time, and Arthur dodging every hit without so much of a sweat.
"This is getting hard to watch," Layla whispered.
Arthur was having similar thoughts as well. Watching someone repeat the same actions over and over again was something he derived no pleasure from, unless it was his enemies. Right when he was about to declare the fight over, Erin did something different.
By focusing her qi energy into her legs, Erin was able to strengthen them, and flashstep just a bit faster.
Just like all the previous times, Arthur stepped to the side, avoiding the attack altogether, but even he could sense that something had changed in Erin’s strategy.
’No, this was her strategy from the beginning. She lulled me into a false sense of incompetence,’ Arthur thought, ’Still, she is no match for me.’
Before Erin could even recoil from her thrust, Arthur lifted her by her hood, instantly defeating her.
’Not only that, but she also used an energy I’ve never seen before, just what is it?’
