When Erin got the shadow ability, she had to figure out how to use all of its skills by herself. Although the system voice did help a little, and the system itself would do the skills for her, it wasn’t exactly the same as getting taught by a master.

It also made her wonder if she could learn the shadow to shadow skill. There were clearly things about the shadow ability that she didn’t know that only a teacher could tell her.

"Sure," Erin nodded, "When do we start?"

"Now don’t think I will teach you without a bit of proper training first," Arthur said, "There is certainly something to say about your attitude, and I need to see you first in action. After all, you are only a Punisher in training."

"Punisher in training?" Erin repeated, and clenched her fists.

’What was the blood sword all about then?’ She thought.

"But that will need to be put on hold. That girl needs to be returned to her family," Arthur said.

"How will we find you?" Quinn asked.

"We?" Arthur questioned.

Quinn cleared his throat, "I mean, how will Erin see you again?"

Arthur chuckled, "I’ll find her when it is time. Now, I have other matters to figure out."

Yet again, he disappeared into a fine shadow mist. Leaving Quinn and Erin with Minny.

"You have a shadow ability?" Minny’s eyes glinted with excitement, and she jumped up and down, "Can you teach me? Can you get that man to teach me?"

Quinn coughed loudly, and Erin bit her lip.

"Well... Yes, I do have that ability, but don’t tell anyone," Erin said, quickly trying to come up with a lie, "If people found out I have a rare ability, they’ll get jealous and lock me up so I can’t use it anymore."

Suddenly, Minny looked sad again, "But why? That’s mean!"

"Less talking, more walking," Erin commanded, and turned towards the direction of the shelter.

Minny smiled, "Okay!"

The other two followed, and Quinn couldn’t help but think that Arthur was a bit too open about the shadow. Perhaps he wasn’t so used to holding up the secrets about vampires, or thought that humans and vampires were already aware of each other. He did certainly seem happy that humans and vampires were interacting together.

Then there were the words that Arthur said. Although Quinn had mostly made his peace with the fact that Erin was using the power of his family’s book, there were always going to be times when he felt a little jealous of Erin. It could’ve been him that was a vampire, him that learned the shadow, and taught the shadow instead of her. After all, that power was originally intended for him, and he could tell that when compared to Erin or Layla, he was starting to fall behind.

But then he reminded himself that they couldn’t do anything about it now, and instead of wondering what could’ve been, he was just going to focus on getting stronger the way he knew how.

’I should figure out how to reach the 5th level of the earth ability,’ Quinn thought, figuring out his next course of action, ’and buy some beast gear to improve my speed. If I am going to play the role of tank, I need to make sure I can reach the people I’m trying to defend.’

They arrived at the shelter, with Minny behind them, and saw an anxious looking Del staring at them from above on the bridges. With how much he was grinding his teeth, they thought he was going to sand them down to nothing by the time they got up there.

"We might be in trouble," Quinn whispered.

Since they had woken up early, even earlier than the military’s morning alarm, the classes hadn’t gone out yet, and although most people were asleep, the same couldn’t be said for the military staff.

Climbing the ladder, Quinn, Minny and Erin couldn’t even get a foot away when Del stomped their way, and pointed at them accusingly.

"When I give you two orders to stay here, I am ordering you to stay here!" Del cried, "If something were to happen to either of you two, then guess who that will fall upon? And if I sent men to come find you, then the protection at this shelter would be weakened. You put us all at risk for a single person?"

Minny took a step behind Quinn, guilt ebbing on her mind. Similarly, Quinn clenched his fists. What was he supposed to do? Stand by when there was something he could do to help?

"Respectfully, who gives a shit," Erin shot back, crossing her arms.

A vein nearly burst off of Del’s forehead, he was about to tell them off when Leo, along with Minny’s mother, heard the commotion going on.

"What appears to be the problem?" Leo said in his commanding voice.

"U-uh, Sergeant Leo!" Del stammered, "I was just telling these two off for going against orders."

Peeking over the side of Quinn’s body, Minny ran out to her mom, arms out stretched.

"Mommy!"

The woman covered her mouth in shock, and lifted her child up in the air the moment Minny was in arm’s reach. She hugged her tightly, burying her face into Minny’s.

"You’re here! Oh my gosh, you’re here!"

Leo turned to Del, a stern look to his posture, "So it appears that these two had brought a missing child back to her mother, correct?"

"Well, yes, but—"

"And were you planning on sending men to go find her?" Leo slowly spoke, "Do not lie to me."

Del bit his tongue. He could argue, but Leo was a higher rank than him, and the man always seemed to have special tricks up his sleeves about "auras" or whatnot.

"Fine, I will let you deal with this matter," Del stated, then walked off.

"Apologies about that man’s actions," Leo said to the woman, "Please, what is your name, ma’am?"

"My name’s Ruby, and trust me, I’ve seen my fair share of troublesome guys like him," Ruby commented, rolling her eyes. She then looked down to her daughter, "Now what were you doing out there? You should know by now that it’s dangerous."

Minny looked off to the side, blushing a little, and she snuggled her face into her mom’s collarbone.

"Um... Looking for something."

Ruby’s eyes widened slightly, and her lip quivered, but only for a fraction of a second, "Well you can tell me more all about it back home."

Erin watched as Ruby and Minny left, some sort of warm feeling in her heart as she did.

’I hope the dalki never come to this planet,’ Erin thought, ’and please... Let that little girl keep her innocence of the world long enough to grow into an adult."
