Brutus wasn’t as quick as Vanthrice, nor did he possess the sharp, storm-like ferocity of Gregor. He lacked the strange, overwhelming aura that surrounded Sage whenever he cast spells.

But the moment he stepped into the heart of the battlefield with his massive hammer resting on one shoulder, every enemy in sight understood one thing: if that hammer struck, there would be no second chances. His large frame was encased in armor already scratched and stained from earlier skirmishes. He breathed heavily but steadily, his eyes calm in a way that belied the raw power he wielded.

Around him, the ruined city trembled from distant clashes. Dust rolled through broken streets like fog, blood staining the cracks between shattered stones while screams echoed from various directions as Riven’s elites pressed their advantage in numbers.

Yet Brutus stood firm in one of the wider broken avenues, a solid wall against an impending flood. His hands tightened around his hammer’s shaft as several enemies began to spread out around him, attempting to surround him without getting too close too quickly.

Not far behind stood Caelis. His face was pale from the strain of earlier battles in the Vault, yet his eyes remained clear and focused. At first glance, his missing arm made him appear uneven; however, he carried himself with a confidence that showed he had adapted to fighting despite that loss.

Unlike Brutus, Caelis didn’t need to be at the forefront to pose a threat; his strength lay in timing and precision. He waited for that perfect moment when even a slight touch could alter the outcome of a fight.

Three enemies charged at Brutus simultaneously, two from the front and one sliding low from the side, aiming not for his head or chest but for his legs. They clearly understood that toppling him was their only chance to neutralize his power.

As they approached, Brutus let out a short breath and lowered his hammer slightly; just before swinging it back up again at them,

Caelis’s calm voice came from behind: "Left foot, half step back. Don’t swing yet."

Without hesitation or question, Brutus followed orders precisely; shifting his left foot back allowed the low attacker’s blade to narrowly miss its mark while simultaneously causing both front attackers to overcommit.

That was when Caelis flicked his fingers, a thin strand of mana wrapped around a broken stone near Brutus’s foot and pulled it across the ground at just the right moment. One attacker stepped on it and lost balance for barely half a breath but half a breath was all Brutus needed.

His hammer swung into action.

It wasn’t fancy, nor did it need to be. The weapon swung in from the side with a heavy, brutal arc, slicing through the dusty air with a deep whistle before crashing into the first attacker’s torso.

The impact wasn’t just sharp; it was final. Armor buckled inward, bones splintered, and the man was sent sprawling sideways like a ragdoll, colliding hard with the second attacker and both of them crashed through a half-collapsed wall.

The low attacker attempted to recover, rolling back to his feet and raising his weapon, but Brutus stepped forward and brought his hammer down with both hands.

The ground erupted beneath the strike; stone shards flew as the enemy vanished under the force, crushed so thoroughly that only blood and shattered metal remained in the crater.

"Good call," Brutus remarked without glancing back, rolling his shoulder as more foes began to close in.

Caelis’s lips twitched slightly. "You were going to swing too early."

"I was going to swing perfectly."

"You were going to miss one."

"Then I would swing again."

"That is not a strategy."

"It works."

Caelis sighed softly, but there was no irritation in it, just the quiet understanding of someone who had fought alongside Brutus enough times to know him well. "Yes, unfortunately it does."

More enemies surged forward, first five, then eight, slipping in from broken alleys and dilapidated buildings. Their formation tightened as they adjusted quickly after witnessing their comrades get crushed. They kept their distance now, spreading out while launching short-range blades and bursts of mana to force Brutus into motion before closing in.

Brutus lifted his hammer and blocked one attack with its metal head; sparks flew as the blade ricocheted off. He twisted his body just in time to absorb another strike on his shoulder guard. But even with all his strength, he couldn’t cover every angle at once.

One enemy darted in from behind with a blade aimed at the gap under his ribs but Caelis had already spotted him. His hand moved swiftly; a pulse of mana struck the attacker’s wrist from the side, not strong enough to harm him but enough to alter the blade’s trajectory by inches.

The attack scraped harmlessly across Brutus’s armor instead of slipping through it.

Without turning fully around, Brutus responded instinctively by swinging the back end of his hammer in a quick motion that smashed into the man’s face and sent him spinning onto the ground.

From that point on, their fight fell into a rhythm not beautiful or graceful but terrifyingly effective. Brutus was like a storm; Caelis was its eye watching from behind it all.

As Brutus advanced forward, enemies tried flanking him; Caelis warned him before they could spring their trap. When Brutus raised his hammer too high for an attack, Caelis adjusted their timing with just a word.

Enemies attempted to bait a wide swing, but Caelis urged Brutus to hold his ground. With a subtle support spell, he created openings by catching an ankle, shifting a weapon, blinding an eye with dust, or nudging a loose stone at just the right moment.

Each time the enemy thought they had found a weakness in Brutus’s defense, Caelis cleverly turned it into bait. Whenever they believed Caelis was too far behind to be of any consequence, his timely support arrived at precisely the worst moment for them.

Then, one elite fighter emerged from behind a shattered pillar, wielding a heavy axe. His presence was imposing; his aura denser and his armor darker than the others.

Unlike his comrades, he didn’t charge recklessly forward. Instead, he studied both Brutus and Caelis with narrowed eyes before pointing his axe toward Caelis.

"Kill the one behind him first," he commanded.

The enemies shifted their focus immediately.

Brutus’s expression darkened. "Wrong choice."

Caelis remained composed. "No, that’s actually a smart choice."

The elite commander charged first not directly at Brutus but around him, using his men as shields to delay Brutus for just a few seconds.

Three attackers lunged at Brutus together, not aiming to kill but merely to stall him while two others rushed toward Caelis from the side.

With a furious roar, Brutus swung his hammer and sent one man flying aside; however, the remaining foes clung tightly to their opening, forcing him to turn more slowly than he desired.

Caelis observed the two attackers approaching him with an unwavering expression as mana began to weave around his fingers like thin threads.

He might not possess brute strength like Brutus did, but that wasn’t necessary. The first attacker swung his blade towards Caelis’s neck; he stepped back just once, close enough for the blade to slice through some strands of hair and then deftly wrapped his mana thread around the attacker’s elbow and yanked sharply. The man’s strike continued too far forward without control.

The second attacker had no time to react and collided directly with his ally’s extended blade.

The blade pierced through flesh.

Caelis sidestepped as the first attacker froze in shock before flicking his fingers again; he summoned a fallen dagger from the ground with mana and sent it spiraling upward into the man’s throat. He fell without even grasping how swiftly the tide of battle had turned against him.

At that moment, the elite commander reached Caelis.

His axe descended quickly and powerfully enough to split stone itself; however, just before impact could occur, Brutus barreled in like an unstoppable force. His hammer slammed sideways against the axe head with an earth-shattering BANG!

Dust exploded outward from their collision as it forced the commander back several steps.

Brutus stood firm between the commander and Caelis, his eyes icy and both hands gripping his hammer tightly. His voice dropped to a low growl. "I said wrong choice."

The commander gritted his teeth and charged again, this time colliding directly with Brutus. Their weapons clashed repeatedly, axe against hammer, with each impact sending sparks flying and shockwaves rippling through the shattered avenue.

The commander was strong, far stronger than the others; each swing of his axe rattled Brutus’s arms slightly. Yet, Brutus didn’t retreat. He absorbed the blows, blocked them, pushed back, and countered every move the commander made while Caelis provided crucial updates.

"Right shoulder dropping."

Brutus adjusted quickly, blocking a hidden strike.

"Left foot unstable."

Brutus seized the opportunity to kick at the commander’s ankle, causing him to stumble.

"Now."

With that prompt, Brutus swung his hammer down hard.

It crashed into the commander’s side with a sickening thud, cracking through armor and forcing blood from his mouth. Still, the man refused to fall. He roared defiantly as his aura flared up and brought his axe down with all his might, aiming to cleave Brutus in two from shoulder to waist.

Brutus instinctively raised his hammer to block but then Caelis shouted louder than before, "Don’t block! Step in!"

Without hesitation, Brutus stepped forward instead of back, entering the space beneath the descending axe where its full force couldn’t reach him. He drove his shoulder into the commander’s chest.

The impact broke the man’s balance; his axe missed wildly and smashed into the ground behind Brutus. At that moment, Caelis sent a sharp pulse of mana into the commander’s knee, making it buckle for just an instant.

Brutus lifted his hammer high.

The commander looked up in disbelief.

There was no time left to dodge.

The hammer came crashing down like thunder splitting stone. The force crushed the commander’s upper body into the ground, creating a deep crater beneath him as cracks spiderwebbed across the avenue’s surface.

Dust erupted in thick clouds while broken stones rained down around them. When visibility returned, the commander lay motionless.

The remaining enemies stared in shock.

Some took hesitant steps back.

Brutus rested his hammer on his shoulder, breathing heavily but standing resolute as Caelis joined him by his side, calm despite beads of sweat trickling down his temple.

For a brief moment they stood together amidst fallen foes and shattered stone: one a mountain of raw strength; the other a quiet strategist turning every second into an advantage.

Brutus glanced at Caelis with a rough grin. "See? My strategy worked."

Caelis surveyed their surroundings, the crushed commander and bodies littering their victory and sighed softly. "Your strategy was simply to hit everything until it stopped moving."

Brutus nodded proudly in agreement. "Exactly."

Caelis shook his head, but the slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth gave him away. "Unfortunately, with the right timing, that strategy still holds water."

Around them, the remaining enemies scattered, their formation crumbling as Brutus stepped forward once more. Caelis raised his hand, ready to back him up.

The avenue that had just moments ago been filled with foes was now theirs, strewn with rubble and blood, a clear testament to their overwhelming victory.
