Caesar's Moon

Chapter 61 - 60: Tied hands

Chapter 61: Chapter 60: Tied hands

Early in the morning, within Caesar’s house, as the alarm bell rang and Caesar extended her arm to silence the noise, Caesar sat up from her bed, walked towards the bathroom and washed her face.

Caesar then stared at her reflection at the mirror and smirked.

Later, Caesar performed her work outs of push ups, sit-ups, pulls and squats before punching a bowl of rice bare knuckled.

Moments later, Caesar stared at one of the wrist weights she held in her right hand and narrowed her eyes.

In a few minutes, Caesar jogged down the streets with the weights round her wrists and ankles. Initially, she halted to catch her breath only for her to grit her teeth and continue jogging.

Later again, Caesar was striking the trees with her fists and feet while having the weights attached.

Each strike made her body feel heavier but she pushed forward and struck regardless.

Time had passed as Caesar was working in the Balland and Barnes Bakery, she noticed her co-workers there exchanging glances at each other before shifting their glances at her. But unlike the previous times, their stares seemed less uncomfortable and less judgemental.

One of the co-workers, a fair skinned male human raised a thumb at her and winked before turning his face away which made Caesar arch a brow.

Caesar carried the tray of cut onions and headed towards another group of coworkers and set the tray on the counter.

"Alright, so-"

Caesar halted midspeech as she saw a fair skinned human trying to pour a bag of mustard into the mustard bottle while it was covered only for the fair skinned human woman to shake her head and speak.

"No, no, no. That’s not how you do it."

The woman opened bottle, turned the cover upside down and placed it on top of the mouth of the bottle.

"Now you can pour it." The woman said.

The fair skinned man nodded his head and started pouring the mustard liquid on top of the cover, leading to the woman to clap rapidly in happiness.

Caesar’s right eye narrowed and twitched.

She then glanced at the two and her lips slightly parted at the left in confusion, but before she could say anything, a voice resonated.

"He’s back!"

"Hm?" Caesar said as she turned to the direction of where the voice came.

Caesar and many of her coworkers moved to the direction and saw the boss of the bakery, Balland standing at the entrance door, surrounded by his employees who were yelling in excitement.

"Boss! Boss! Welcome back! Welcome back, boss!"

Caesar upon seeing him, her face softened and her eyes widened.

Balland caught notice of Caesar and smirked.

Later in the afternoon as Caesar was at the end of her shift, dressed in a grey hoodie, black leggings and blue sneakers, preparing to leave the bakery, a masculine voice sounded.

"Caesar!"

Caesar turned to the direction and saw the person to be Balland.

"Can I speak with you?" Balland asked.

Caesar nodded her head in response which led Balland to smirk.

"Come with me." Balland said as he turned his back to walk away.

Caesar followed Balland until they stepped out through the back of the bakery.

After stepping outside and closing the back door, Caesar placed her hands in her pockets and spoke.

"What’s up, boss? And once again, it’s good to see you again."

"And once again, it’s good to be back." Balland replied, "I know you’ve been wondering where I was during my absent days. If I was alright or if anything happened to me because I said no visits nor phone calls."

"Yeah, I was." Caesar said.

"Well, nothing happened to me. I just needed to stay off the grid for a while." Balland said, "After all, trying to get help for you ... Getting involved with Mizukai business is a risky thing.

I told you before that I’m a survivor of them, so I know what and what not to do."

Balland then sighed and continued speaking.

"Remember I told you that I got one of the families to pick interest in your case. That if you can thrive in EBW for a whole year, then they will step in and set you free?"

"Yeah. I remember you did." Caesar answered.

"Well, I managed to get two more families to pick interest in your situation and they gave the same answer as the first family I went to." Balland said, "Thrive for a year and they will step in."

"Thank you, sir." Caesar said.

"And just like I said before: don’t thank me, yet. Not until it works." Balland replied, "The two families were highly intrigued with your performance against Damien yesterday. So they are hoping you do not disappoint them."

"I don’t intend to." Caesar said, "After all, I have already made up my mind of my movement in the company."

Balland stared at Caesar for a time and narrowed his eyes before he spoke.

"You alright? There’s something... Different about you."

"Something in you has changed." Balland continued as Caesar stared at him with an arched.

"You’re right. Something in me has changed... And I’ll say it’s a good thing it did." Caesar said.

Balland stared down at Caesar with narrowed eyes for some seconds, trying to understand the odd pressure coming from her.

"Okay... Just be careful." Balland said.

Just before Balland could walk away, Caesar spoke.

"Uhm... Boss... Did you see the news? The one of the escaped asylum patient?"

Balland paused for a moment and tilted his head down.

"I did. He escaped... Kaezan Aris." Balland said, "He looked different, yet I could still recognize him."

"I had an encounter with him in the graveyard when he tried to rob his stepbrother’s grave." Caesar said.

"I watched the fight between you two after seeing the video of you and Damien in the cafe." Balland said.

"He was really broken." Caesar said, "The Mizukais really messed him up... ’Akari’ really messed him up."

"I know it might not be in my place to ask this..." Caesar continued as she tilted her head down, "But is it possible for the families to get the Mizukais to release us both?"

"It’s not that simple." Balland answered, "Though the Mizukais may rank fourth among the twelve families that have influence over everything in Neo-earth, that doesn’t mean the other three that are higher than them can just step in like that.

Already, stepping in for you is a huge risk which is why they demanded for a year from you, but trying to get both you and Kaezan out... It’s like they are fully trying to pry into the family’s business.

This could cause a serious inter-family conflict."

"And just as I said before, the Mizukais are fourth ranked in position among the twelve, but they are not to be tested." Balland continued as Caesar subtly clenched her fists.

"Damnit. It’s like I’m failing to save him again." Balland said, "The first time like I said that I tried to help, he was so scared and angry. The Mizukais had really done a lot of damage to him... I came too late, and then after that, he wounded up in a mental hospital.

Now, I still can’t do much because it would seem like I’m pushing it with these people."

"I understand." Caesar said, "Not everyone can be saved. And trying to do that will end up endangering everyone."

"The debt..." Caesar continued as she raised her head, "Kaezan said that it was seven hundred thousand his so called friends set him up to borrow from the Mizukais. But after our fight in the graveyard and Mizukais covering him, I could tell they must have settled the workers from the ward he escaped; not to mention they paid for the damages caused in the graveyard I worked, and still compensated the owner, Mrs Plank.

So it’s obvious it’s no longer that amount he owes."

"No, it isn’t." Balland replied, "They’ve probably added more to the money. Only heavens knows how much."

"I’m sorry, Caesar." Balland continued as he looked over his shoulder, "I truly can’t save Kaezan this time."

"Don’t be. There is not much you can do." Caesar replied, "I just wish there was a way to help him. I haven’t spoken to him since the hospital.

I saw the look on his face when Akari walked into the hospital room... That look of fear. I told him to not let Akari win... Never to give her the satisfaction of seeing him break for the second time.... But I don’t know if he can."

Balland narrowed his eyes at Caesar before turning his face away.

"Both of our hands are tied here. For now, focus on yourself and the ones you’re trying to protect."

Balland walked away to open the backdoor and leave Caesar alone in the backyard.

Caesar stared down at the ground with a conflicted demeanor before she took a deep breath.

"Damnit. I’m sorry, Kaezan."

Caesar then followed after Balland and closed the backdoor.

Meanwhile it was unknown to the duo that had left that one of the workers, the dark skinned female beastfolk with long white hair and snow leopard spots on it , Gura, was hiding behind one of the trees while her eyes were narrowed with suspicion.
