Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 84: Deadly Yanni Hills-1Using them a second time was nothing more than a gamble. As soon as he exited the Burning Star Base, the intense heat made him feel as though he wanted to tear off his clothes.
Just as he moved forward, coughing, he spotted Lance standing with several thugs. Meng Xiaoni subconsciously lowered his gaze.
Lance noticed and chuckled. "Boy, scared now? Come here."
He grabbed Meng Xiaoni and dragged him a short distance away from the base gate. The grab was enough to send Meng Xiaoni into a fit of coughing, and Lance unconsciously loosened his hold.
There were no zombies nearby, thanks to the hunters of the Burning Star Base who regularly cleared the surrounding area. Because of this, people could move around outside the base without constantly worrying about being surrounded by zombies.
Once they were far enough away, Lance snatched Meng Xiaoni’s bag and roughly rummaged through it. After finding nothing, he tossed it back.
"What is this? You didn’t even bring anything with you. What a poor wretch."
He turned toward his thugs. "Let’s go. He isn’t carrying anything useful."
The thugs immediately nodded and laughed.
"Only Mr Lance is a true citizen of Burning Star. He always makes sure to teach these plagiarists a lesson. Who would have thought someone like him would dare to accuse our dear Mr Mo!"
Before the man could finish, Lance clenched his fist and kicked him away. "Stop buttering me up. I’m not interested in listening to your nonsense."
With that, he walked away. Meng Xiaoni said nothing. However, the bag felt noticeably heavier in his hand.
He immediately understood what had happened. Lance had used his spatial ability to secretly transfer something from his own storage space into the bag.
Meng Xiaoni didn’t open the bag and continued toward his first destination. The walk was difficult considering he was becoming weaker and weaker day by day.
He even suspected that he had contracted cancer. Otherwise, how can his stomach ache one day and the next day he cough up blood?
If only Ji Henghua were with him.
Riley Forest was dangerous for ordinary people, but Meng Xiaoni had already explored it once.
He knew which paths belonged to mutated beasts, which plants released poisonous spores, and which areas were best avoided entirely.
He didn’t waste time fighting.
Whenever he encountered a mutated beast, he simply took the route he had memorised beforehand. If a mutated plant blocked his path, he used the weakness he had discovered during his previous visit.
His enhanced intelligence had allowed him to memorise the forest’s terrain almost perfectly.
Even the safest resting spots were already marked in his mind.
As night fell, he entered a hollow tree that he had previously used as a shelter and sealed the entrance with several poisonous vines. Most mutated beasts instinctively avoided those vines.
He ate some of his food and continued moving at dawn, which proved daunting to him. To prevent making any noise, he had to choke down his own coughing.
It was difficult and hard on his lungs, but the silver lining was... he knew he wouldn’t have to do it for long.
This time, the journey through Riley Forest was much faster. By evening, Meng Xiaoni had already reached the edge of the forest.
He finally let out the coughs that he was holding back and ate a special type of herb called ’goldroot’.
Found only after mutation, the herb could practically soothe the lungs and stop coughing. Because of its miraculous effects, it was sold for a high price at first.
But due to Su Yao, it became affordable even to the common people. A special field was dedicated to cultivating these herbs, and the idea had come from Mo Beichan.
He looked toward the distant Yanni Hills.
"Now comes the troublesome part."
Yanni Hills were completely different from Riley Forest.
The moment Meng Xiaoni stepped inside, his eyes widened slightly.
Green stretched as far as he could see. Tall trees stood quietly along the hills, while soft moss covered the ground, giving the entire area a peaceful appearance.
Yet something felt wrong. There were hardly any plants besides the trees near the entrance. More importantly, there were no zombies. Not even mutated beasts.
For a place as dangerous as Yanni Hills, the silence was unsettling. Meng Xiaoni frowned. Still, he had no choice.
He activated his combat suit and Speed Boots.
Buzz!
His figure instantly disappeared.
With the Speed Boots accelerating his body, he rushed through the forest at an astonishing speed. The trees blurred around him as he crossed the terrain.
One-third. He had already covered nearly one-third of Yanni Hills.
Then... Beep! Beep! Beep!
The suit suddenly flickered. Meng Xiaoni’s expression changed. "Not now!"
The concealment function shut down. His Speed Boots followed moments later. He stumbled and barely managed to regain his balance.
Damn it. The equipment had failed far earlier than his calculations suggested.
Before he could inspect it... Whoosh! Something suddenly struck him from beneath. Meng Xiaoni’s body was thrown several metres away.
Bang! He crashed into a tree, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "What?"
He immediately looked around. There was nothing, only trees and moss. His enhanced intelligence rapidly scanned his surroundings, but he couldn’t find a single trace of an attacker.
Swish! Something struck again. Meng Xiaoni narrowly dodged, but a sharp edge tore through his side. Blood splattered onto the moss. His pupils contracted.
He retreated several steps, his expression becoming serious. An enemy capable of attacking him without revealing itself, and he couldn’t even determine its direction.
He had originally planned to rely on his equipment to pass Yanni Hills within five minutes.
Now he was trapped in the middle of an unfamiliar territory with an invisible enemy hunting him. Meng Xiaoni tightened his grip on the equipment in his hand.
"Just what is hiding here?"
Beneath his feet, the moss suddenly trembled almost imperceptibly, but he didn’t notice.
