Chapter 236: Chapter 236: The Prophecies
Afterward, the three felons were sent off for treatment with bandages wrapped around their injured eyes.
Tokyo Public Safety had its own specialized "doctors." They weren’t ordinary physicians, but people who had gained special abilities through contracts with Devils. An injury like losing one eye could practically be considered minor to them.
"All right. You can start looking into the future now, can’t you?" Kotone Asaba said.
At the same time, he brought over another felon and had the man serve as the subject whose future the Future Devil would examine. In exchange, part of the man’s sentence would be reduced.
Kotone didn’t want the Future Devil peering into his own future. Having something so personal examined made him uncomfortable.
"Sure."
The Future Devil addressed the felon. "Come on, come on. Stick your head in here."
This was the man’s first time encountering a Devil that seemed relatively "friendly," and somehow, that only made him even more nervous.
With an anxious expression, he did as the Future Devil instructed and stuck his head forward.
A short while later, the Future Devil finished.
"You can go back now."
Kotone had the man leave first, then dismissed everyone else as well.
Once only the Future Devil, Kotone, and Fami remained, Kotone continued, "All right. Tell me exactly what you saw."
"Three days from now, that man will die because of Nostradamus’s prophecy," the Future Devil answered simply.
"Any more specific details?" Kotone pressed.
"Nope. Three days from now, he’ll die before he even gets a chance to see what kills him," the Future Devil replied.
"All right. At least we’ve confirmed when it’ll happen."
Kotone nodded slightly.
Even if he brought in several more felons and had the Future Devil examine their futures, the results would probably be much the same.
After all, the Great King of Terror was almost certainly at least a Primal Fear. An ordinary human had absolutely no ability to resist a Primal Fear, so naturally, they wouldn’t even live long enough to see what was happening.
"But human civilization won’t end when the time comes," the Future Devil added.
"It won’t end? What do you mean? Does someone successfully fight off the Great King of Terror?" Kotone asked in confusion.
"No. I’m not really sure about the details either. I can’t see what happens any farther beyond that point," the Future Devil replied.
"All right. I understand."
Kotone acknowledged him, then glanced at Fami.
The next moment, the two of them left.
However, Kotone didn’t return home. Instead, he headed straight for a library.
There, he found Les Prophéties, Nostradamus’s collection of prophecies, which contained the passage associated with Nostradamus’s prophecy.
Something about what the Future Devil had said bothered him. Human civilization apparently wouldn’t end the way Fami had claimed, yet no one would successfully defeat the Great King of Terror either.
Asking Fami probably wouldn’t get him any useful answers. It seemed as though she was deliberately hiding quite a bit from him.
So Kotone decided to study the prophecy himself and try to uncover the truth.
After searching for a while, he found the passage he wanted.
"In July of 1999."
"To resurrect the King of Angoulmois."
"The Great King of Terror will descend from the sky."
"Before and after, Mars shall reign."
"So that people may live in happiness."
Those few lines were the only useful information he could find.
Yet those lines alone were enough to resolve some of Kotone’s doubts.
"Mars shall reign" and "people may live in happiness."
Those two lines plainly indicated that human civilization really wouldn’t come to an end.
Which raised a new question.
Who was Mars?
And what exactly did this "happy life" look like?
