Chapter 421: Chapter 419:”Satisfying.”

The Tower of Ascension.

The lore behind this one landmark was as old as the first invasion of Terra itself.

With its impossibly towering height, black and imposing walls, it truly stood like a silent deity overlooking all of Terra.

And now, standing before it, I could feel it. This thing, it wasn’t of this world.

I had already suspected as much, but now, I was assured.

Add to that the fact that I was literally the bearer of this world, the sensation couldn’t be any clearer, and along with that, I could also feel a very annoyed and irritated presence within.

I didn’t need to think much to know who that would be.

I looked around, slowly taking in the surrounding crowd. They moved like nothing had changed.

I was sure I had relocated the world from orbit to my soul space, I could feel it clearly, yet the people here seemed completely oblivious to that fact as they moved on with their lives.

I had yet to understand fully what I could do with this title and this world, but with Shaia here, I was sure to get something good out of it.

"Heh!" A small smirk couldn’t help but find its way onto my lips as I took my steps toward the entrance of the tower.

"Who are they?"

"I don’t know, but they look important."

"I wonder which ancient family has come to take the tests of the tower this time?"

"Right. There’s been quite an increase in the number of ancient family members that have come to take the tower’s test."

"I wonder what happened?"

The murmurs of the crowd around us fell on deaf ears as me and the others made a beeline for the tower.

We had left Terra behind in the world’s core as she still seemed to have a lot of things to do.

So, together with the rest, I made my way through the gates of the tower, the feeling akin to that of passing through a curtain of water coming over me. I was all too familiar with this feeling as soon my eyes were greeted by an open landmass.

The earth was marshy and swampy.

{DING}

{Welcome, trial taker, to the first floor of the tower. I am your guide, Ascensia, and I shall explain the workings of the tower and what you need to know before proceeding. Are you ready?}

Reading through the notification before my eyes, I couldn’t help but laugh.

"Really, Tower? We’re doing that now? I’d have thought you smarter than this. Are you really just giving me the chance to run amok freely in this place? Do you believe I’ll blow every single floor here to damnation if you let me continue?" I spoke out calmly, an amused smile on my face.

...

...

...

Silence was all that greeted me.

"Alright then, suit yourself." My grin turned wicked. "Ascensia, you don’t need to worry, I know how to navigate myself quite properly." Saying so, I slowly curled my fingers as the whole floor began trembling. No, not just the floor, the tower in its entirety was trembling.

Yet, just before I could let loose my punch,

"Arrrgggghhh!!! You insufferable man!!! Can’t you just let me be???" A beautiful yet annoyed voice sounded through the entire structure.

"Heh! Well, I was polite enough to speak to you, but you ignored me."

"Haaa... fine. Fine. What do you want?"

"Shouldn’t you apologize for being rude? And shouldn’t you appear in person to show sincerity?"

"First off, fuck you and your apology—"

"I’m flattered, but I still need to see you to consider if you’re worth the effort, so why not show up and let me get a look at your face properly?" My grin was an absolutely scummy one.

"ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!! This bastard!!!!" The reaction was exactly as intended.

"BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...." I laughed.

"Dante!!! I swear I’ll kill you!!"

"Yeah, yeah. Hold that thought, sweetheart. I need to go greet some people first, I believe I’ve kept them waiting long enough."

"Humph! No talking with the prisoners."

"Prisoners?"

"Heh!"

I ignored the annoying voice, closing my eyes as I looked for those particular energy signatures.

I still remembered them like the back of my hand, after all, that punch was pretty unforgettable.

It wasn’t even an instant later that I locked onto them, and then, "Heh! Time to return the favor, o grandfather of mine." My excitement slowly rose as spatial displacement took me away.

.....

On the 999th floor of the Ascension Tower.

"Hmm?" The surrounding essence of death saturating a particular room on this floor churned as something moved within it.

Deathly grey eyes burning with an ethereal flame opened as, "The little one has come." A gravelly voice echoed through the churning environment.

"Hahahahahahahahahaha...." A boisterous laughter, the sound of which was akin to metal sheets scraping against one another, burst through the dark room.

"Finally. I get to see how far the little one has come." Momon Du Mont, First Sword of Death, laughed.

"I keep telling you that this is a bad idea, Momon, but your head seems incapable of understanding what I’m saying."

"Omari, don’t tell me you’re scared of the little one. Nonsense! We’re his designated grandpas, our job is to gauge his ability, humph." Momon huffed.

Yet before Omari could speak,

"Heh! I wouldn’t have said it any better myself, o grandpa of mine." An amused voice sounded from right behind them as the two death knights turned, their eyes landing on the tall and imposing figure of Dante.

"Yo! Been a while."

....

....

I had appeared within a dark and dreary space saturated with the essence of death the moment I used spatial displacement.

My eyes landing on the two hulking death knights before me.

Omari and Momon, even if I wanted to forget their names, I couldn’t. They had left that much of a lasting impression.

The essence of death around me couldn’t touch me, in fact, nothing could. After all, I wasn’t really here, I was Absent. And that was why they couldn’t have noticed me.

I listened quietly as Momon, the 10-foot-tall death knight, laughed and droned about finally meeting me again.

The dullahan, Omari, tried to talk the old death metal out of his delusions, yet it proved futile.

"Omari, don’t tell me you’re scared of the little one. Nonsense! We’re his designated grandpas, our job is to gauge his ability, humph." The old death metal huffed.

Hearing his words, I couldn’t help but smile slowly, wickedly.

"Heh! I couldn’t have said it any better myself, o grandpa of mine."

My words successfully caught the attention of the two as they turned slowly toward me.

"Yo! Been a while," I greeted with a wave.

There was a beat of silence before, "Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!" Momon burst into wild laughter.

"Little one! You’re finally here!"

"I am. Grandpa Momon seems especially delighted to see me." I nodded innocently.

"Of course I am. Now, come! Show me how far you’ve come." Straight to the point, no dawdling.

The man hadn’t even cared to ask how I’d appeared here. How long I’d been here for. He just tossed caution to the wind and then, like the first time we met, appeared right before me, gauntleted fist screaming toward my face.

The punch was powerful. Many times more terrifying than what he used during the entrance exams, but...

THUD!!

"Old man, seems you’re getting pretty rusty." I smiled as I caught the blow effortlessly.

"Looks like you’ve forgotten how to throw a punch." My smile turned sinister.

"Eh?" I ignored the confusion burning in the old death metal’s grey flames as my fingers slowly curled into a fist that sent the environment churning hard.

"Old man, this..." I pulled my arm back, slowly. Deliberately.

"... is how you throw a punch," I finished, letting loose my punch as...

Craaaaannnkkkk!!!

That was the sound of the old knight folding like a sheet of scrap metal.

BANG!!!!

The folded ball slammed into a distant wall as a deathly silence choked the entire place. Even the essence of death had gone still.

My eyes slowly landed on the still figure of old man Omari. "Now then, dear grandpa, ready for your turn?"

"Ahh... I think I’m too old for this nonsense..." The old rider sighed, picking up his lance, and then...

BANG!!!

He suffered the exact same fate as the old death knight.

"Ahh.. yes. That was satisfying." I sighed in utter satisfaction.

Call it what you want. But they had it coming.

"Now then, grandpas, I think it’s time we talked properly." I walked toward them.

"Tell me all you know about Father’s time within the tower." It was time for a long overdue conversation...

*******

A/N: Hahaha... this guy has no respect for the elderly. Can’t say Momon doesn’t deserve his own, but Omari? Come on Dante. The old guy didn’t even do nothing. Sigh... anyway...
